Rhynchophorus bilineatus, common name Black Palm Weevil, is a species of beetles belonging to the family Curculionidae.

Description

Rhynchophorus bilineatus can reach a body length of about 40mm. These large beetles are considered a major pest in palm plantations, mainly in Cocos nucifera , Metroxylon sagu and Metroxylon solomonense .

In fact the adults lay eggs in wounds in the stems of palms. After hatching, the weevil larvae excavate tunnels in the trunk and feed on the tissues, frequently leading to the death the host plants.

Distribution

This species can be found in the Moluccas, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands. Reports of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus from these areas are likely to be misidentified specimens of bilineatus.

The larval grub is considered a delicacy in West Papua, as well in Papua New Guinea. [1] The Asmat, Korowai and Kombai peoples of southern New Guinea also hold the larva in high regard as a food source. [2] Sago larvae are roasted on a spit to celebrate special occasions in New Guinea. [3]

<i>Rhynchophorus cruentatus</i> Species of beetle

The palmetto weevil is an insect native to Florida, but has been found as far as southern Texas to the west and South Carolina to the north. It is the largest weevil in North America and the only kind of palm weevil in the continental United States. It infests palms and is considered a pest. Its main target is the Canary Island date palm, but date palms, sabal palms, saw palmetto, Washingtonia, Pritchardia, royal palms, Latania, coconut palms, Caryota, and Bismarckia are also susceptible. Distressed palm trees are usually attacked, which makes transplanted trees a frequent target. The Palmetto Weevils mate at the base of the palm branches where the females deposit their eggs. If they do this during daylight, the beetle will beat its wings and provide a buzzing sound. The musicians' mouths act as a variable resonance chamber, in the same way as it does for a musician playing a Jew's harp or musical bow. By opening and closing their mouths and changing the shape, musicians can raise and lower the pitch, and make the music louder or softer.
