Road 48, unofficially called Karbala Highway, is in Markazi Province, Hamedan Province, and Kermanshah Province in western Iran. [1] [2]

Contents

It is very important for Iranian government and Iranian people, since many people go to Karbala and Najaf (two Shi'a holy cities) by this road. It reaches the Khosravi international border crossing with Iraq. [3]

Freeway 6 runs parallel to the road from Saveh to Kurijan with plans to run parallel all the way to the border with Iraq at Khosravi. It is connected to M40 of the Arab Mashreq International Road Network.

Kermanshah Province is one of the 31 provinces of Iran and one of the provinces which border Iraq. The province was known from 1969 to 1986 as Kermanshahan, and from 1986 to 1995 as Bakhtaran. Khanaqin is the central city of Khanaqin District in Diyala Governorate, Iraq, near the Iranian border (8 km) on the Alwand tributary of the Diyala River. The town is populated by Kurds who speak the Southern Kurdish dialect. Khanaqin is situated on the main road which Shia pilgrims use when visiting holy Islamic cities. The city is moreover rich in oil and the first Iraqi oil refinery and oil pipeline was built nearby in 1927. The main tribes of Khanaqin include Kalhor, Feyli, Zand, Malekshahi Suramiri, Arkavazi and Zangana.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Railways is the national state-owned railway system of Iran. The Raja Passenger Train Company is an associate of the IR, and manages its passenger trains. Shalamcheh is a town located in Khuzestan Province, Iran. It is situated on the border with Iraq, north-west of Abadan. The town was one of the main sites of invasion of Saddam Hussein's Iraq in the Iran–Iraq War. Some 50,000 Iranians died in the fighting around the town, and there is today a war memorial in their memory. One of the two railway projects connecting Iran to Iraq is through Shalamcheh.

The Karbala provincial headquarters raid was a special operation carried out on January 20, 2007, by the Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq against the U.S. contingent of the Joint Security Station, located within the Iraqi Police headquarters. The assault, which left five U.S. soldiers dead and three wounded, has been called the "boldest and most sophisticated attack in four years of warfare" and is furthermore notable for being one of the few instances when any sort of militants or insurgents have actually managed to capture U.S. soldiers since the Vietnam War.

In response to the loss of the strategic al-Faw Peninsula during the Iran–Iraq War, the Iraqis pushed into Iran to seize the strategic Iranian city of Mehran to trade for the strategically important territory. Saddam was able to seize the city in May 1986, for the third time. He then offered to trade it for al-Faw, but instead of negotiating, the Iranians recaptured the city in June 1986.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Freeway 6 (Iran)</span> Road in Iran

Freeway 6 is a freeway in central and western Iran located in Markazi and Hamedan Provinces. It is about 175 kilometres (109 mi) long and it connects Saveh to Hamedan. The freeway was completely opened in winter (February) 2016. There are plans to expand the freeway towards Kermanshah and Khosravi near the Iraqi border and join Highway 5. The freeway runs parallel to Road 48.

Chazabeh is a border terminal in Iran, located in Khuzestan province in south-western Iran. It is in the common border between Iran and Iraq, 95 km from Ahwaz, the center of Khuzestan. Chazabah can be regarded as an important border terminal that is especially an entry point in addition to the Shalamcheh border crossing for those who intend to travel from Iran into Iraq through Khuzestan.

Operation Karbala-9 was an offensive operation in Iran–Iraq War, which was launched by Islamic Republic of Iran Army with the operation code of "Ya Mahdi, Adrekni" on 9 April 1987. This operation ended inconclusively, and Iran had very large casualties from the numerous Iraqi traps.
