Robert Lawrence Barchi (born November 23,1946) is an American academic,physician,and scientist. He was the 20th president of Rutgers University,holding the position from September 1,2012,to June 30,2020. [1] [2] Barchi was appointed to the position on April 11,2012,to succeed Richard L. McCormick. [3] Previously,Barchi was president of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia,prior to which he was provost of the University of Pennsylvania. [4]
Barchi is a board-certified neurologist. [5] He earned his BSc degree from Georgetown University in 1968,a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1972,and an MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973. Born in Philadelphia,Barchi grew up in Westfield,New Jersey,before moving back to Yardley,Pennsylvania during his freshman year of high school,attending St. Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia.
Barchi's appointment came as Rutgers was preparing to absorb most of the schools,programs and facilities of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey following the approval of a merger proposal by the New Jersey Legislature and the Governor of New Jersey during the summer of 2012. [6]
Robert Lawrence Barchi was born on November 23,1946,in Philadelphia. He was raised in Westfield,New Jersey. He earned a BSc and a MS at Georgetown University and a PhD and an MD from the University of Pennsylvania. He trained in neurology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was part of the Medical Scientist Training Program. [7]
Barchi began as his career an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of Pennsylvania. By 1985,he was the David Mahoney Professor of Neurological Sciences. He served as director of the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences from 1983 to 1996. In 1992,Barchi became the chairman of the Department of Neuroscience at the Perelman School of Medicine,a department that he had founded. He led the Department of Neurology from 1995 to 1999.
Barchi's research in neuroscience and neurology has been supported by the National Institutes of Health. His most extensive research focus has been on voltage-gated ion channels in nerve and muscle and the role these molecules can play in human disease. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences,the American Society for Clinical Investigation,and the Association of American Physicians. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science,the American Neurological Association,and the American Academy of Neurology. He has won the Jacob K. Javits Award from the National Institutes of Health.
He was provost of the University of Pennsylvania from 1999 to 2004. Barchi served as president of Thomas Jefferson University from 2004 to 2012 and president of Rutgers University from 2012 to 2020.
At Thomas Jefferson University,Barchi oversaw establishment of the College of Pharmacy and College of Population Health,expanded oncology programs,and increased student enrollment by 51 percent. He also doubled the level of annual fundraising.
Barchi oversaw the formation of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences in 2013 and the entrance of Rutgers University-New Brunswick into the Big Ten Conference a year later. He led the establishment and construction of an honors college at New Brunswick that contributed to a 50-point rise in average SAT scores of incoming students over four years. Barchi welcomed President Barack Obama to speak at the 2016 commencement ceremony celebrating Rutgers' 250th anniversary year. He directed $2.5 billion in new construction at Rutgers and an increase in annual fundraising from $95 million in 2012 to $251 million in 2019. Barchi helped negotiate an agreement between Rutgers and RWJBarnabas Health in 2018 to jointly operate New Jersey's largest academic health system.
In July 2019,he announced that he would retire at the end of the 2019–2020 school year.
Barchi is married to Francis Harper Barchi,an academic on faculty at Rutgers' Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy. Barchi is an authority on timepieces,with a special interest in their history and mechanical development. Francis Leo Lawrence was an American educator and scholar specializing in French literature and university administrator. A graduate of Saint Louis University and Tulane University,Lawrence taught at Tulane for over 30 years and held posts as academic vice president,provost,and dean of the graduate school before being appointed as the 18th president of Rutgers University (1990–2002).
Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is a medical school of Rutgers University. It is one of the two graduate medical schools of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences,together with New Jersey Medical School,and is closely aligned with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital,the medical school's principal affiliate.
Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ) is a public community college with two campuses New Jersey,one in Sewell and one in Vineland and Millville. The college was established in 1966 as Gloucester County College. In 2014 the college changed its name to Rowan College of Gloucester County when Rowan University and Gloucester County College entered into a partnership. The college then expanded in 2019,combining Rowan College at Gloucester County (RCGC) and Cumberland County College to become Rowan College of South Jersey. The college now offers conditional dual enrollment with Rowan University depending on GPA. While then GCC took the Rowan name,the community college maintains its independence with its own Board of Trustees and administration.
The Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy of Rutgers University serves as a center for the theory and practice of urban planning and public policy scholarship. The school is located in New Brunswick,New Jersey,and was named in honor of the former Rutgers University president,Edward J. Bloustein. Through its academic programs and research centers,the Bloustein School engages in instruction and research,and combines learning and application. The school's strengths and the specializations of its faculty are vast and many of its faculty members are the founders of theories or practices that are now commonplace in urban planning and policy. Areas of expertise for Bloustein faculty members include transportation planning and the environment,while others have specialties in policy. In 2018,a year long search for a new dean ended when Piyushimita (Vonu) Thakuriah was announced as dean. Dr. Thakuriah's experience in both transportation and data science and the launch of a new graduate degree in Public Informatics signal the schools readiness top tackle the increasing pace of government innovation in the 21st century.

Busch Campus is one of the five sub-campuses at Rutgers University's New Brunswick/Piscataway area campus,and is located entirely within Piscataway,New Jersey,US. Academic facilities and departments centered on this campus are primarily those related to the natural sciences:physics,pharmacy,engineering,psychology,mathematics and statistics,chemistry,geology,and biology. The Rutgers Medical School was also built on this campus in 1970,but a year later was separated by the state,renamed the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School,and merge with the New Jersey Medical School and other health profession schools in Newark and New Brunswick to create the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Rutgers and the medical school continued to share the land and facilities on the campus in a slightly irregular arrangement. On July 1,2013,Robert Wood Johnson Medical School was officially merged back into Rutgers University,along with most of the other schools of UMDNJ,with the exception of the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine.
Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center (PMC),formerly known as the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro,is a 355-bed non-profit,tertiary,and academic medical center located in Plainsboro Township,New Jersey,servicing the western New Jersey area and the Central Jersey area. Kyle J. Flood is an American football coach and former player. He is currently the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the Texas Longhorns football team. He is also the former head football coach of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Flood was named the 29th head football coach of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team after Greg Schiano accepted the National Football League head coaching position for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is the first Rutgers football head coach to be promoted from assistant since the 1973 season. Flood is a graduate of Iona College and earned four varsity letters for the Gaels between 1989 and 1992.
