Rufus Giwa Polytechnic is a tertiary learning institution in Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria. The National Board for Technical Education has approved it as a state-owned Polytechnic. [1] It is also accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. [2]

The Polytechnic was established by edict in 1979 with the name The Polytechnic, Owo by the outgone Military Governor Sunday Tuoyo., While it began it's activities in January 1980. [3] The Executive Governor Adekunle Ajasin began to operate the Polytechnic immediately he assumed office in early 1980. It was renamed Ondo State Polytechnic in 1990. By 2010, the polytechnic had over 4,000 students. [4]

The Polytechnic has several department in the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Technology, LEMS, etc.The Ondo State Government's primary mandate for the Institution is to provide middle-level manpower in science and technology fields. This initiative aims to enhance technological development in Ondo State and Nigeria as a whole. [3] It has a mandate of training and developing techniques in Applied Science, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Accounting, Commerce and Home Economics. [5]

Rectors

Rufus Giwa Polytechnic had the following rectors: Mr Olusegun Arodudu, Dr Adeyeri, Prof Adedimila, Mr Alao, Mr Ogundowole, Prof Peter Fapetu, prof ajibefun, Engr Ologunagba and Mr Gani Ogundahunsi .The present acting Rector of the polytechnics is Olorunwa Adegun. [4] [6]

Rename of the institution

In June 2003, the Polytechnic was renamed after Chief Rufus Folusho Giwa, a prominent businessman from Ondo who had become president of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN). [7] Students protested the change of name and the school was shut down, only reopening on 29 September 2003. [8] In July 2009, the polytechnic closed down due to a strike by the staff over non-payment of 10 months monetization arrears. [9] In February 2010, Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko inaugurated a 16-person governing council for the polytechnic. [10] In March 2010, Mimiko said that his government had paid the monetisation arrears of N210 million owed to the polytechnic. [11]

Admission requirements

Seeking admission into Rufus Giwa polytechnics Ondo state, Aspirant must have 5 credit pass in west Africa examination council(WAEC), or National Examination council (NECO), Or NABTEB, Including English and mathematics. And also must have the Equivalent cut off mark, for Joint Admission matriculation Board exam(JAMB) for the year.

Library

The Library began its operation in 1980 with opening stock of 2800 volumes of information materials. It was established to provide academic support to the institution. The library had made provision for relevant information materials and equipment towards the achievement of its major goals so that the advancement of quality education and technological advancement. [12]

Project commission

On 2 October 2020 the former governor of Ondo state Rotimi Akeredolu commissioned a Radio station that was built by the school. A new bursar building was also commissioned alongside the radio station in the school. [13]

He served as the 16th governor of Ondo State, becoming the first two-term governor of Ondo State, and the first Labour Party governor in Nigeria. Mimiko was previously a federal minister for housing and urban development, a secretary to the Ondo State Government, and a two-time Ondo State Commissioner for Health.

Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu ; 21 July 1956 – 27 December 2023) was a Nigerian lawyer and politician who served as governor of Ondo State from 2017 until his death in 2023.

Adamawa State Polytechnic is a tertiary educational institution in Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria. It was established in 1991 through a merger of the College of Preliminary Studies Yola and the Staff Development Institute, Numan. The new polytechnic provides national diploma programs in computer science, statistics, accountancy, business studies and secretarial studies. The polytechnic, run by the State government, is accredited by the National Board for Technical Education. Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology formally Ondo State University of Science and Technology is a state owned university located in Okitipupa, Ondo State, Nigeria. It was established in 2008 by the Ondo State Government under the leadership of Dr. Olusegun Agagu. The university commenced academic activities in January 2011, and currently offers various programmes of study under the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Agriculture & Agricultural Technology and Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology.

Nahzeem Olufemi "Femi" Mimiko is a Nigerian educational administrator and former vice chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, a state-owned university named after the former governor of Ondo State, Nigeria, Adekunle Ajasin. The university was ranked the best state university in Nigeria by the United States Transparency International Standard (USTIS) in April 2014. Mimiko was the only vice chancellor delegate at the National Conference in Nigeria held in 2014 under the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. Mimiko assumed office in January 2010 and was preceded by Philip Olayede Abiodun. In 2016, he had a stint as African and African-American Studies Associate, at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA.

Abiola Peter Makinde born is a financial management expert and politician. He is a member of Nigeria Federal House of Representatives holding assignment for Ondo East/Ondo West federal constituency of Nigeria's western state of Ondo. In 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed Makinde National Board Member of Nigeria Literacy Commission and was on the assignment until 2015 when President Jonathan and People's Democratic Party, PDP lost federal power to then opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.

The 2012 Ondo State gubernatorial election occurred on October 20, 2012. Incumbent governor, LP's Olusegun Mimiko won election for a second term, defeating other party candidates. Mimiko received 43.79% of the total vote and won in 13 of the state's 18 LGAs, closely followed by PDP's Olusola Oke who won in two LGAs with 26.25% of total votes, while the ACN candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu, who won in three LGAs came third with 24.15% of the votes. Mimiko becomes the first Incumbent governor of Ondo State to be re-elected.

The Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa is a state government higher education institution located in Eruwa, Oyo State, Nigeria. The current acting Rector is Peter Adejumo.
