Russel E. Caflisch (born 29 April 1954) [2] is an American mathematician.

Biography

Caflisch is Director of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University (NYU), and a Professor in the Mathematics Department. Russel Edward Caflisch was born in Charleston, West Virginia. [2] He received his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in 1975. He earned a master's degree and Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. [2] His dissertation was titled "The Fluid Dynamic Limit and Shocks for a Model Boltzmann Equation." (1978) [3] He has also held faculty positions at Stanford and NYU. He has served as PhD advisor for 22 students, with 55 descendants. [4] Up until August 2017, Caflisch was the director of the Institute for Pure & Applied Mathematics (IPAM) and a professor in the Mathematics department, where he also held a joint appointment in the department of Materials Science and Engineering. [5]

Caflisch was a founding member of California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI). Caflisch's expertise includes topics in the field of applied mathematics, including partial differential equations, fluid dynamics, plasma physics, materials science, Monte Carlo methods, and computational finance.

Recognition

Caflisch was awarded the Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship in 1975 [6] and a Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship in 1984. He was named a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2009, [7] the American Mathematical Society in 2012, [8] and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2013. [9] He was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in April 2019. [10]

Caflisch was an invited speaker at International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid in 2006, [11] and at the conference Dynamics, Equations and Applications in Kraków in 2019. [12]

His parents are Edward G. Caflisch and Dorothy G. Caflisch.

Russel Caflisch is married to Carol Lynn Meylan.

Kurt Otto Friedrichs was a noted German-American mathematician. He was the co-founder of the Courant Institute at New York University, and a recipient of the National Medal of Science.

Charles Samuel Peskin is an American mathematician known for his work in the mathematical modeling of blood flow in the heart. Such calculations are useful in the design of artificial heart valves. From this work has emerged an original computational method for fluid-structure interaction that is now called the “immersed boundary method". The immersed boundary method allows the coupling between deformable immersed structures and fluid flows to be handled in a computationally tractable way. With his students and colleagues, Peskin also has worked on mathematical models of such systems as the inner ear, arterial pulse, blood clotting, congenital heart disease, light adaptation in the retina, control of ovulation number, control of plasmid replication, molecular dynamics, and molecular motors.

Horng-Tzer Yau is a Taiwanese-American mathematician. He received his B.Sc. in 1981 from National Taiwan University and his Ph.D. in 1987 from Princeton University. Yau joined the faculty of NYU in 1988, and became a full professor at its Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in 1994. He moved to Stanford in 2003, and then to Harvard University in 2005. He was also a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1987–88, 1991–92, and 2003, and was a distinguished visiting professor in 2013–14.

Garabedian was the Director-Division of Computational Fluid Dynamics at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University. He is known for his contributions to the fields of computational fluid dynamics and plasma physics, which ranged from elegant existence proofs for potential theory and conformal mappings to the design and optimization of stellarators. Garabedian was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1975.

Laure Saint-Raymond is a French mathematician, and a professor of mathematics at Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES). She was previously a professor at École Normale Supérieure de Lyon. She is known for her work in partial differential equations, and in particular for her contributions to the mathematically rigorous study of the connections between interacting particle systems, the Boltzmann equation, and fluid mechanics. In 2008 she was awarded the European Mathematical Society Prize, with her citation reading:

Saint-Raymond is well known for her outstanding results on nonlinear partial differential equations in the dynamics of gases and plasmas and also in fluid dynamics. [...] Saint-Raymond is at the origin of several outstanding and difficult results in the field of nonlinear partial differential equations of mathematical physics. She is one of the most brilliant young mathematicians in her generation.

Thomas Yizhao Hou is the Charles Lee Powell Professor of Applied and Computational Mathematics in the Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the California Institute of Technology. He is known for his work in numerical analysis and mathematical analysis.

Chia-Kun (John) Chu was a Chinese-American applied mathematician who was the Fu Foundation Professor Emeritus of Applied Mathematics at Columbia University. He had been on Columbia faculty since 1965 and served as the department chairman of applied physics and nuclear engineering three times.

Lisa J. Fauci is an American mathematician who applies computational fluid dynamics to biological processes such as sperm motility and phytoplankton dynamics. More generally, her research interests include numerical analysis, scientific computing, and mathematical biology. She is the Pendergraft Nola Lee Haynes Professor of Mathematics at Tulane University, and was president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (2019-2020)].
