Ryujinx is a discontinued free and open-source emulator of the Nintendo Switch. It was first released on February 5, 2018 and supported more than 3,000 games by 2024.
On October 1, 2024, Ryujinx pulled its source code from GitHub, and the project was shut down after a request from Nintendo.
Ryujinx features an accurate recreation of the Nintendo Switch's Maxwell GPU. [1] It supports the Nintendo Switch's docked and handheld modes in addition to resolution scaling beyond those supported by the original hardware.[ citation needed ]
Ryujinx supports multiplayer through its LDN network, allowing games to be played between multiple users of the emulator. As of the release of LDN3 players with a modded physical Nintendo Switch can play with others on the LDN network. [2]
According to the developers in May 2024, more than 3,550 games were playable on Ryujinx out of 4,300 titles tested, with 4,100 being able to boot past menus and into gameplay. [3]
Ryujinx Initially starting out as an ARM64 emulator in October of 2017, Ryujinx development began in December of 2017. [4] [5] Written in C#, it was the first Switch emulator to boot commercial games. [6] [7] [8] In April 2018, it was reported that it was initially able to play part of Cave Story and Puyo Puyo Tetris . [7] According to the creator, gdkchan, Ryujinx had a focus on correctness, rather than adding game-specific hacks as is practiced by some console emulators. [9] Development of Ryujinx was funded via Patreon, with 800 members contributing $1,661 a month as of October 1, 2024. [10] [6] [9]
On July 31, 2022, Ryujinx announced a new backend for the Vulkan graphics API, resulting in significant performance improvements of up to 413% in some titles, over the original OpenGL backend. [11]
On November 26, 2022, Ryujinx announced a macOS port, becoming the first Nintendo Switch emulator to arrive on the platform. The port takes advantage of the hypervisor present on Apple silicon hardware to run the ARMv8 code of the Nintendo Switch natively, unlocking significant performance benefits, as compared to standard emulation. On March 2, 2024, Ryujinx made the transition from a GTK based GUI to one made in the C# native framework, Avalonia. [13] [14]
In the post announcing the project's end on October 1, 2024, developers revealed internal projects to bring Ryujinx to iOS and Android. These projects were not publicly released. [15]
On October 1, 2024 Ryujinx's GitHub page was taken down. [6] [16] [17] A moderator of Ryujinx's Discord server wrote that "Yesterday, gdkchan was contacted by Nintendo and offered an agreement to stop working on the project, remove the organization and all related assets he's in control of. While awaiting confirmation on whether he would take this agreement, the organization has been removed, so I think it's safe to say what the outcome is." [6] [16] [17] [18] It was not clear if the agreement offered by Nintendo included monetary compensation, with PC Gamer noting that it was unlikely. [17]
On April 25, 2023, Ryujinx was featured in PC Gamer alongside now-discontinued open-source emulator Yuzu ahead of the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom . [9] Following the release of the game, PC Gamer released a follow-up article on a number of fixes implemented to improve emulation. [19]
Following the release of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom on September 26, 2024, Ryujinx was noted by multiple outlets as being capable of running the title at a high frame rate. [20] [21] [22]
VisualBoyAdvance is a free emulator of the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance handheld game consoles as well as of Super Game Boy and Super Game Boy 2. It is still downloadable to this day.
Homebrew, when applied to video games, refers to software produced by hobbyists for proprietary video game consoles which are not intended to be user-programmable. The official documentation is often only available to licensed developers, and these systems may use storage formats that make distribution difficult, such as ROM cartridges or encrypted CD-ROMs. Many consoles have hardware restrictions to prevent unauthorized development.
Project64 is a free and open-source Nintendo 64 emulator written in the programming languages C and C++ for Microsoft Windows. This software uses a plug-in system allowing third-party groups to use their own plug-ins to implement specific components. Project64 can play Nintendo 64 games on a computer reading ROM images, either dumped from the read-only memory of a Nintendo 64 ROM cartridge or created directly on the computer as homebrew.

Usually, retrogaming is based upon systems that are outmoded or discontinued, although ported retrogaming allows games to be played on modern hardware via ports, emulations or compilations. It is typically for nostalgia, preservation, or authenticity. A new game could be retro styled, such as an RPG with turn-based combat and pixel art in isometric camera perspective, as well as chip-tune styled music.

PCSX2 is a free and open-source emulator of the PlayStation 2 for x86 computers. It supports most PlayStation 2 video games with a high level of compatibility and functionality, and also supports a number of improvements over gameplay on a traditional PlayStation 2, such as the ability to use higher resolutions than native, anti-aliasing and texture filtering. It has been released for Windows, Linux, and macOS.

Originally called bsnes, the emulator is notable for attempting to emulate the original hardware as accurately as possible through low-level, cycle-accurate emulation and for the associated historical preservation efforts of the Super NES platform.
A video game console emulator is a type of emulator that allows a computing device to emulate a video game console's hardware and play its games on the emulating platform. RPCS3 is a free and open-source emulator and debugger for the Sony PlayStation 3 that runs on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and macOS operating systems, allowing PlayStation 3 games and software to be played and debugged on a personal computer. It is being developed in the C++ programming language targeting x86-64 and ARM64 CPUs featuring OpenGL and Vulkan as backend renderers.
Cemu is a free and open-source Wii U emulator, first released on October 13, 2015 for Microsoft Windows as a closed-source emulator developed by Exzap and Petergov. With the release of Cemu 2.1 on August 27 2024 it gained stable support for Linux and macOS. Though still under development, it is able to run the majority of games smoothly, assuming compatible hardware. The popularity of the emulator spiked with the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in 2017 as Cemu successfully booted and ran the title within hours of its release.
Citra is a discontinued free and open-source emulator of the handheld Nintendo 3DS for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Citra's name is derived from CTR, which is the model name of the original 3DS. Citra can run many homebrew games and commercial games. As of August 2024, Citra has been forked in a GitHub repository by former Citra team member PabloMK7, and is currently continuing development.
Video game preservation is a form of preservation applied to the video game industry that includes, but is not limited to, digital preservation. Such preservation efforts include archiving development source code and art assets, digital copies of video games, emulation of video game hardware, maintenance and preservation of specialized video game hardware such as arcade games and video game consoles, and digitization of print video game magazines and books prior to the Digital Revolution.
Yuzu is a discontinued free and open-source emulator of the Nintendo Switch, developed in C++. Yuzu was announced to be in development on January 14, 2018, 10 months after the release of the Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo data leak, also known as the Nintendo Gigaleak, is a series of leaks of data from the Japanese video game company Nintendo on the anonymous imageboard website 4chan. The leak started in March 2018, but became most prominent in 2020. Ten main sets of data leaked on 4chan, ranging from game and console source code to internal documentation and development tools. The name "Gigaleak" mainly refers to the second leak on July 24, 2020, which was 3 gigabytes in size. The leaks are believed to have come from companies contracted by Nintendo in the design of these consoles, and/or from individuals previously convicted of intrusion into Nintendo systems. An earlier, much smaller leak had also occurred in 2018 which contained the Nintendo Space World 1997 demos for Pokémon Gold and Silver.
Emulators of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo's current eighth-generation video game console, have been in development since 2017, less than a year after the console's release. Multiple emulators have been in development, the most well-known being Yuzu and Ryujinx, both now defunct. Switch emulators have been widely noted by video games journalists for the swift and significant progress of their abilities to accurately emulate the console, as they are already able to run existing and new titles for the console in a playable state, sometimes within days of their release, as well as able to run on a variety of devices, including PCs running Windows and Linux, and the Steam Deck.
Nintendo is one of the largest video game publishers in the world, producing both hardware and software. Since the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, the company has generally been proactive to assure its intellectual property in both hardware and software is legally protected. Nintendo's protection of its properties began as early as the arcade release of Donkey Kong which was widely cloned on other platforms, a practice common to the most popular arcade games of the era. Nintendo did seek legal action to try to stop release of these unauthorized clones, but estimated they still lost $100 million in potential sales to these clones. Nintendo also fought off a claim in 1983 by Universal Pictures that Donkey Kong was a derivative element of their King Kong in Universal City Studios, Inc. v. Nintendo Co., Ltd.; notably, Nintendo's lawyer, John Kirby, became the namesake of Kirby in honor of the successful defense.
shadPS4 is an emulator for the PlayStation 4. It supports Windows, Linux and MacOS. shadPS4 can only emulate some games to varying degrees of support.
It began as a single-developer project in 2017, collecting a small team of developers along the way.
