S. S. Murthy is a senior professor at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. [1] [2] He has taught for 40 years at IIT Delhi, IIT Punjab, BITS Pilani, NSIT Delhi.

Early life and education

Murthy was born in Shikaripur, Karnataka, India, in 1946. He received his B.E., M.Tech. and Ph.D.degrees respectively from Bangalore University, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, and IIT Delhi.

Teaching and research

After serving a year at BITS Pilani he became faculty member at IIT Delhi. He became a professor in 1983. He has held many visiting Positions in India and abroad, including Visiting Fellow, University of Newcastle (UK); Visiting Professor, University of Calgary (Canada); Visiting Consultant, Kirloskar Electric Company; Director, ERDA Baroda; Adjunct Prof. IISc Bangalore; and Director of NITK, Surathkal.

Publications

Murthy has published about 200 research papers in international journals and presentations at conferences. [3] [4] In 1962, he was awarded the Prime Minister of India Prize in the electrical engineering division for his paper 'Modern Trends in Construction and Maintenance of Transmission Lines'. [5]

Murthy holds four patents concerning the self-excited induction generator, Micro Hydel Applications and a novel-braking scheme. He has also transferred technology of self-excited and grid connected induction generators to industry for low-and medium-power generation under standalone or grid connected mode using energy sources such as wind, wave, small hydro, biomass, and fossil fuels. He designed the first indigenous 55 kW wind electric generator for Kirloskar Electric. [6] in 1987 which was installed in field. He developed 150 kW generator for wave energy which was installed near Trivandrum. He has transferred technology on a novel generator for portable gensets to industry. The indigenous technology developed by him under a DST funded project was used to install five Pico hydro stand alone power plants in Karnataka. He has completed over 100 industry sponsored research and constancy projects dealing with electrical machines, drives, and energy systems. He was instrumental in establishing up to date energy audit and energy conservation facilities at IIT under World Bank funding.[ citation needed ]

As a professor, Murthy has contributed to curriculum development in electrical engineering for AICTE at IIT Delhi, and has set up three new UG/PG programs there. He is frequently interviewed by the press as an expert in electrical systems and engineering. [7]

In 2009, Murthy was the Faculty Association chairman at ITT Delhi. [8]

IN 2013, Murthy was appointed Vice Chancellor of the Central University of Karnataka, Gulbarga. [9] His first task there was to integrate the various elements of the engineering program. [10]

He was Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and was in temporary charge of the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management Gwalior. From the year 2016 to 2020, Professor Dhande was the Chairman, Board of Governors of National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai, an Institute established by the Government of India in the year 1963. He was also Chairman, Board of Governors of National Institute of Technology Delhi . Professor Dhande was the founder director of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Jabalpur. He served as a part-time member of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Also, he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">P. K. Kelkar</span> Indian scientist

Purushottam Kashinath Kelkar (1909-1990) was an Indian scientist who is best remembered for being the founding director of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, which was established in 1959. He was also involved in the planning process for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai and served as its third director, for a period of 4 years. Kelkar was instrumental in securing USA's technical collaboration in the establishment of IIT Kanpur, by persuading the then USA ambassador, John Kenneth Galbraith to locate the fledgeling institution on the outskirts of Kanpur, in North India. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of Padma Bhushan in 1970.

Previously he was Vice-Chancellor at VIT University.. On his 75th Birthday (07.10.2019), he was given the title of "Electrical Professor" by all his research scholars, faculty and well-wishers and a personal website of him was launched titled www.electricalprofessor.com. The 75th birthday also marks his 50 years of professional experience.

Prof. Narinder Kumar Gupta, known as Prof. N. K. Gupta or Prof Narinder Gupta is a research scientist, educator, and engineer. Born 22 August 1942 in Mirpur, Jammu and Kashmir, India, is Professor of Mechanics at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi. Gupta works in the area of large deformations of metals and composites at low, medium and high rates of loading. His research stimulates the development of constitutive behaviour of materials, understanding of the basic mechanics of large deformation, design for crashworthiness of road and air vehicles, design for safety in defence applications and in design of metal forming processes.

Venu Ramgopal Rao is an Indian academic currently serving as the Vice Chancellor of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. He was previously the Director of IIT, Delhi.

Rajpal Singh Sirohi is an Indian optics physicist, academic administrator, educator, and researcher in optical metrology. Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad is an autonomous engineering and technology institute in Dharwad, Karnataka, India. IIT Dharwad started functioning from July 2016 in a temporary campus, previously of the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) in Belur Industrial Area, on the outskirts of Dharwad city. It was formally inaugurated on 28 August 2016. For the academic year 2016–2017, the institute offered B.Tech courses in three branches, namely. Vaidyeswaran Rajaraman is an Indian engineer, academic and writer, known for his pioneering efforts in the field of Computer Science Education in India. He is credited with the establishment of the first academic program in computer science in India, which he helped initiate at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in 1965. An elected fellow of all the Indian science academies, he is a recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the highest Indian award in Science and Technology category for young scientists and several other honors including Om Prakash Bhasin Award and Homi Bhabha Prize. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honor of the Padma Bhushan, in 1998, for his contributions to science.

Mangalore Anantha Pai was an Indian electrical engineer, academic and a Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. A former professor of electrical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, he is known for his contributions in the fields of power stability, power grids, large scale power system analysis, system security and optimal control of nuclear reactors and he has published 8 books and several articles. Pai is the first India born scientist to be awarded a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Anurag Sharma is an Indian physicist and a professor at the department of physics of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He is known for his pioneering researches on optoelectronics and optical communications and is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences, India as well as Indian National Academy of Engineering. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Engineering Sciences in 1998.

Ranjan Kumar Mallik is an Indian electrical and communications engineer and a professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He held the Jai Gupta Chair at IIT Delhi from 2007 to 2012 and the Brigadier Bhopinder Singh Chair from 2012 to 2017. He is known for his researches on multiple-input multi-output systems and is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, and The National Academy of Sciences, India. He is also an elected fellow of The World Academy of Sciences, Indian National Academy of Engineering, and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Prem Saran Satsangi is the eighth and current Sant Satguru of Radha Soami Sect, Dayalbagh. He holds the Emeritus Chair from the East of the Integrated East-West Forum at The Science of Consciousness Conferences since 2012. Amit Kumar is Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He received his B.Tech. degree from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1997, and Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2002. He worked as Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs, Murray Hill, New Jersey, U.S. during 2002–2003. He joined IIT Delhi as faculty member in 2003. He works in the area of combinatorial optimization, approximation algorithms and online algorithms. He is working extensively on problems arising in scheduling theory, clustering, and graph theoretic algorithmic problems.
