SFX Coasters are a model line of high-technology steel roller coasters designed and offered by Dynamic Attractions. Aimed to mix a thrilling roller coaster experience with complex and highly innovative show sequences, the coaster was signed off for various park projects, although only Mission Ferrari at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi has managed to open. [1] A highly costly development led to multiple projects either being left in limbo or outright cancelled, driving Dynamic Attractions towards bankruptcy. [2]
Dynamic Structures first entered the amusement park industry in the 1990s, providing the systems for various attractions at Disney and Universal Studios parks. The 2000s saw the latter construct Revenge of the Mummy, a pair of indoor roller coasters at Universal Studios Florida and Hollywood in 2004 that was subsequently followed by a third at Universal Studios Singapore in 2010. Manufactured by Premier Rides, the attractions featured linear induction motor (LIM) launches and high-speed switch tracks to change paths or directions, the latter of which were installed by Dynamic Structures themselves. [3] Using the idea as a foundation, their amusement ride business was spun off into Dynamic Attractions in 2011 and the following year began development of the SFX Coaster, which sought to combine a thrilling roller coaster experience with immersive show sets and storytelling. [1]
Dynamic Attractions officially unveiled the new attraction offering in June 2014 at Beijing's Asian Attractions Expo, after which it subsequently received an IAAPA Brass Ring award for Best Concept. [4] [5] Soon thereafter, various SFX Coaster projects were quickly snapped up by Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, 20th Century Fox World Malaysia, and Evergrande Group, with track being fabricated by China's Guangdong Qiguang Group. Velocity Magnetics meanwhile, a well known magnetic braking supplier, would provide the Linear Synchronous Motors (LSM's) at the same time that they were working on Lightning Rod at Dollywood. [6] [7]
Engineers invested the equivalent of 500 person years developing the SFX coaster, which included the design and commissioning of four groundbreaking features; the Gyro Table, Slide-Side coaster track-on-top-of-a-track, Track Drop, and Tilt & Drop seesaw. Each of these increasingly complex innovations were individually tested at their factory, but troubleshooting could only be done at their coaster construction sites. [1] The developments proved costly, with a concoction of testing problems and budget overruns eventually pushing Dynamic to the financial brink. In the meantime, rival manufacturers began to design and implement similar models of the product with far less difficulty; Intamin introduced their own "Multidimensional Coaster" line with different train configurations and stunt elements while ART Engineering successfully implemented a sliding track on Primordial at Lagoon in 2023. [8] [9]
Dynamic Attractions officially entered CCAA protection in March 2023, with the intent of a financial restructuring in order to pay off its creditors. [2] According to Forbes, "During the engineering, design and construction of the Coaster Projects, [Dynamic Attractions] experienced significant cost overruns that exceeded USD$21,000,000 and [was] forecasted to lose a minimum of USD$20,000,000". [10] The onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic also lead to quarantine restrictions hampering their project personnel as well as increased costs for virtually all raw materials, shipping, labour, and subcontractors. The company was eventually sold in May 2023 to Hong Kong-based financial services firm Promising Expert Limited (PEL) for US$2,000,000. [11]
In November 2014, Dynamic Attractions announced at the IAAPA Expo in Orlando, Florida that Ferrari World Abu Dhabi would receive the first SFX Coaster, in a bid to strengthen their attraction offerings. [12] [13] The coaster would replace their short-lived V12 Enter the Engine flume ride, and include two "world's-first" elements alongside intricate show scenes.
Although construction began in 2015, Mission Ferrari wasn't able to open to the public until January 2023. [14] The enormous delay was attributed to the complexity of the ride system, concurrently-running research and development, prototyping of the entire coaster hardware, testing difficulties, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Dynamic Attractions' unstable financial standing. [1] Although the contract had initially necessitated a lump sum of $18.2 million USD, costs ran far over budget to $28.3 million. [10] To date, Mission Ferrari is the only completed and operational SFX Coaster.
Malaysia's Resorts World Genting first announced 20th Century Fox World Malaysia World in July 2013, set to replace its outdoor Genting Highlands park and open in 2016. [15] Amid their merger with The Walt Disney Company, however, 20th Century Fox terminated their licensing deal with Genting in 2018; Genting Malaysia promptly filed a billion-dollar lawsuit alleging Disney executives' role in the decision. [16] Fox countersued in January 2019, claiming that the resort had failed to meet agreed-upon construction deadlines for several years. [17] A settlement was reached in July 2019, with the park being renamed to Genting SkyWorlds and retaining access to a more selective group of Fox IP's. [18]
Resorts World Genting purchased two coasters from Dynamic Attractions; Mad Ramp Peak, a Sons of Anarchy themed Dual Power coaster, and an SFX Coaster originally meant to be themed to Alien vs. Predator . As part of the settlement reached with Fox, Genting lost access to the planned Alien vs. Predator IP, instead hastily rechristening the surrounding area as Andromeda Base. The intensive show scenes had been crucial to the ride experience, and much of the coaster would have to be redesigned in order to accommodate a new theme or IP. In addition, Genting's team had become aware of issues with the project as early as a factory visit in August 2018, with Dynamic subsequently directed to prioritize Mad Ramp Peak's development. [19]
Dynamic Attractions originally committed to building the AVP Coaster system for a lump sum of $34 million. [10] Track for the SFX Coaster first began arriving in January 2018. [20] The show building and outdoor layout section were constructed, but only portions of the coaster were installed indoors before work was halted during 2019. [21] In March 2023, Forbes reported that Dynamic Attractions had already spent $26.4 million constructing the coaster, and that additional changes to the design would cost another $16 million. As per filings, they had reportedly only been paid $24 million and there was a risk that "[Genting] could cancel the contract and demand that the ride components installed to date be removed from the facility." [10] Both of the uncompleted coaster projects were left in limbo after the manufacturer declared bankruptcy. In an effort to raise cash for Dynamic Attractions, much of the already-produced AVP ride components were auctioned off in July 2023. [22] [23]
Reports emerged later in the fall that Genting had issued RFP's to various vendors; their legitimacy was confirmed by ex-vice president Greg Pearn, who stated online that, "Both [coasters] are, in my opinion, not worth the additional investment to complete for many reasons", citing "complexity vs experience delivered" and "poor legacy procurement decisions". [24] He concluded as a whole that, "Dynamic Attractions' sales team sold rides they couldn’t deliver". [19]
In 2017, Chinese real estate developer Evergrande Group announced a series of fifteen "Children's World" theme parks to be built across the country between 2019 and 2022. The parks were an effort to "surpass Disney" as the world's top theme park operator, with ¥7 billion RMB to be invested into the construction of each. [25] Although the corporate contracted suppliers such as Vekoma, Zamperla, and HUSS Park Attractions, a pair of SFX Coasters were also reportedly signed off for unknown locations. [10] [26]
Evergrande's theme park development process over the next three years proved challenging; executives burned through dozens of designers, demanding ideas that were unfeasibly large in scale. The company's further attempt to create their own team of theme park engineers also proved ineffective. [27] In wake of the 2020–2022 Chinese property sector crisis, Evergrande's subsequent default on US$300 million in debt, and their ongoing restructuring, the theme park projects ceased to move forwards. [28] [29] Fortunately for Dynamic Attractions, they had received advance payments for the two SFX Coasters, which are not anticipated to be returned. [10]
Located in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, the park was originally announced in 2012.[ citation needed ] While the Phase 1 waterpark – Jinghu Paradise Water World – successfully opened in 2015, the theme park was never completed and the land was eventually used for residential development instead. [30] Although a Maurer AG spinning coaster and HUSS Frisbee were spotted onsite in 2017, reports had indicated that an SFX Coaster would also be in the mix. [31] None of these attractions are known to have resurfaced elsewhere.
A roller coaster is a type of amusement ride employing a form of elevated railroad track that carries passengers on a train through tight turns, steep slopes, and other elements usually designed to produce a thrilling experience. Trains consist of open cars connected in a single line, and the rides are often found in theme parks around the world. Roller coasters first appeared in the 17th century, and LaMarcus Adna Thompson obtained one of the first known patents for a roller coaster design in 1885, based on the Switchback Railway which opened a year earlier at Coney Island.
PortAventura World is an entertainment resort in Salou and Vila-seca, Tarragona, on the Costa Daurada in Catalonia, Spain. It was built around the PortAventura Park theme park, which attracts around 5.3 million visitors per year, making it the most visited theme park in Spain and the sixth most visited theme park in Europe.
Six Flags Fiesta Texas, formerly known simply as Fiesta Texas, is a theme park located in Northwest San Antonio. It opened on March 14, 1992, in the La Cantera master-planned development and district as the first business in that development. Spanning 200 acres (81 ha), the park was originally built to become a destination musical show park with its focus on the musical culture of the state of Texas. The park was purchased by Time Warner in 1995, and branded as a Six Flags park for the 1996 season.
Kingda Ka is a hydraulically-launched steel roller coaster located at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, United States. Manufactured by Intamin and designed by Werner Stengel, Kingda Ka opened as the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world on May 21, 2005, surpassing Top Thrill Dragster. It is the second strata coaster ever built, exceeding 400 feet (120 m) in height. Both were made with similar designs, although Kingda Ka's layout adds an airtime hill on the return portion of the track.
Six Flags Great America is a 304-acre (123 ha) themed amusement park located in Gurnee, Illinois, within the northern Chicago metropolitan area. The amusement park originally opened as Marriott's Great America on May 29, 1976, as one of two theme parks built by the Marriott Corporation. Six Flags acquired the amusement park in 1984 after the theme park division was an earnings disappointment for Marriott. The sale gave Six Flags rights to the Looney Tunes intellectual properties.
Intamin Amusement Rides is a design and manufacturing company in Schaan, Liechtenstein, best-known for designing and constructing thrill rides and roller coasters at dozens of international theme parks, amusement parks and other establishments. The Intamin brand name is a syllabic abbreviation for "international amusement installations". The company has corporate offices across the world, including three in Europe, three in Asia, and two in the United States.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril is a roller coaster attraction at Disneyland Park (Paris). It opened on 30 July 1993. Based on the Indiana Jones films, guests are taken on an adventure riding in a mining train through a lost temple. The attraction was sponsored by Esso.
Formula Rossa is a launched roller coaster located at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Manufactured by Intamin, the ride set a speed record when it opened on 4 November 2010, becoming the fastest roller coaster in the world with a maximum speed of 240 km/h (149.1 mph). It surpassed Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure, which had held the record since 2005. In addition to its top speed, the coaster propels riders from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in approximately two seconds and will reach its maximum speed in 4.9 seconds.
Fiorano GT Challenge is a steel dueling roller coaster at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The roller coaster features two, 1.08-kilometre (0.67 mi) tracks, each of which has four LSM launches and four magnetic brake sections, immersing passengers into the twisting, head-to-head varying speeds and accelerations of GT racing. Power for the ride system is provided via two flywheel motor generator sets, isolating the surge requirements of the launches from the electrical grid. The trains' 3 cars have been modeled after the styling of Ferrari F430 Spiders.
Dynamic Structures of the World is a Canadian company with a history of steel fabrication dating back to 1927. They create amusement rides, theme park rides, observatory telescopes and other complex steel structures.
The Flash: Speed Force is a steel shuttle roller coaster at Warner Bros. Movie World on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. Opened on 13 May 2024, it is an Intamin Half Pipe roller coaster themed to the DC Comics superhero the Flash. The ride originally opened as Surfrider at the nearby Wet'n'Wild Gold Coast, where it operated from September 2007 until 2020, before being removed in April 2023.
Wing Coaster is engineering firm Bolliger & Mabillard’s designation for its winged roller coaster designs. Winged roller coasters are a type of steel roller coaster where pairs of riders sit on either side of a roller coaster track in which nothing is above or below the riders. B&M began development on the first Wing Coaster between 2007 and 2008 leading to the opening of Raptor at Gardaland on 1 April 2011. There were sixteen B&M-designed Wing Coasters either under construction or operating worldwide as of December 2020.
ARTHUR is an inverted-spinning dark ride roller coaster at Europa-Park in Rust, Germany. The attraction opened in spring 2014 as part of the wider "ARTHUR - In the Minimoys Kingdom" area themed after the Arthur series of books and films by Luc Besson.
Polercoaster was a type of amusement ride offered by US Thrill Rides and Intamin. An installation consists of a large tower structure which features glass elevators to an observation deck, as well as a steel roller coaster wrapping around the tower. The model was first introduced in 2012, and in 2013, four were proposed for construction. However, US Thrill Rides cancelled all future Polercoaster locations, after the company went bankrupt.
Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is a mostly indoors theme park located on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is the world's first Ferrari-themed park and features Formula Rossa, the world's fastest roller coaster.
US Thrill Rides was an entertainment design and consulting company in Orlando, Florida. It was best known for creating thrill rides in several US locations.
Flying Aces is a steel roller coaster at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was manufactured by Intamin and opened on 24 February 2016. It is the second Wing Coaster manufactured by Intamin and reaches a height of 63 metres (207 ft), has a maximum speed of 120 kilometres per hour (75 mph), and features 1,500 metres (4,921 ft) of track. For safety reasons, the ride has a height restriction in place.
Toutatis is a steel launched roller coaster located at Parc Astérix in Plailly, France. Toutatis was first announced at the IAAPA Orlando Expo in 2018 and upon opening became France's tallest and fastest coaster. It features four launches with a top speed of 107 km/h (66 mph) and a 51-metre (167 ft) top hat. It is named after Toutatis, a Celtic god who features in the Asterix books.
Mission Ferrari is an enclosed roller coaster located at Ferrari World on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. An SFX Coaster developed by Dynamic Attractions, the coaster stages thrilling ride elements against highly immersive media. Originally intended to operate in 2015, Mission Ferrari became notorious for spending eight years under construction due to issues with the highly sophisticated prototype hardware and the COVID-19 pandemic. Its costly development ultimately pushed Dynamic Attractions to declare bankruptcy shortly after the ride opened.
