Sekolah Menengah Sains Hulu Selangor (English: Hulu Selangor Science Secondary School; SEMASHUR) is a Malaysian boarding school located in Hulu Selangor, Selangor. The 60-acre school is located near Hulu Yam, 30 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur.

Received Cluster Schools award in 2009 with niche area of rugby, hockey, uniformed bodies and mathematics, SEMASHUR has a good track record when it managed to get number 1 in PMR achievements among SBP schools in 2008 and recorded a hat trick in 2010, 2011 and 2012. [1]

History

SEMASHUR encompasses an expansive area spanning 60 acres, featuring 40 acres of lush greenery alongside a 7-acre former mining pool. Accessible via the River Tua to Batu Caves (25 km) or the Tg. Pilot - KL road to Rawang (30 km), the institution was officially inaugurated on 16 June 2000 as the 38th Sekolah Berasrama Penuh. Operational duties commenced promptly on 20 June 2000, with the establishment team consisting of the Senior Assistant, Senior Assistant Student Affairs (HEM), and 23 faculty members entrusted with educating the pioneer cohort of 150 students. Subsequently, on 21 July 2000, SEMASHUR welcomed its inaugural batch of 180 Form 1 students, marking the commencement of its academic journey. The school's milestones continued as it admitted its first Form 4 intake in February 2001. A significant accolade was achieved on 9 April 2009, when SEMASHUR was honored with the Cluster Schools award, recognizing its exemplary performance in specialized areas such as rugby, uniformed bodies, and mathematics.

The school basketball team is Blazes Semashur.

Sports

SEMASHUR men basketball team won its first Central Zone Championship in 2005. In 2008, it was rebranded to SEMASHUR Blazes and since then, has achieved glorious success. Men Blazes team have won the Central Zone Championship 6 times in a row (2008-2013) and been to the semi-final of the national levels for 5 times in a row (2008-2012). They finished 4th in 2008, 3rd in 2009, 4th in 2010, 2nd in 2011, and 4th in 2012. Semashur Blazes revelation in basketball have been noticeable by national basketball powerhouse such as Mr Liew (MCKK Cagers coach) who recognised Semashur Blazes as a rising force in SBP basketball alongside SainsKu and SDAR. Semashur Blazes close rivals in central zone are INTEGOMB and SSAS while in the national level are MCKK, SAINSKU, SDAR, and MOZAC. The most notable figure in establishing Semashur Blazes success is the team manager, Wan Johari Wan Gati, who left Blazes after the 2012 season came to a close. Notable players include Ibrahim (2001-2005), Haiqal Azree (2004-2008), Afif Ismail (2005-2009), Ruzaini (2006-2010) and Sulaiman 2018-).

SEMASHUR rugby team, Zealord, is also one of top teams in Malaysia which have won numerous championships at national and international level since the inception of the school. Some of the alumni have joined top rugby clubs after high school and play in the Malaysia Rugby League Premier.

The tournament was first held in 2011.The winners are awarded the NJ Ryan Cup, named after the last foreigner headmaster that lift up the school rugby team in the past.

The MCKK Premier 7's 2013 was the third edition of the annual, invitational Malay College Rugby Premier Sevens, which involved teams from Malaysia premier schools, states champions and international schools. Brunei International School and Hong Kong Sports School joined in the fray as international participant, other than Vajiravudh College of Thailand.Singapore withdrew their participation this year and is replaced by Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Kuala Terengganu It was held from 22 till 24 February 2013. The defending champions, Sekolah Sukan Tengku Mahkota Ismail were shocked by their first defeat in the tournament after two undefeated editions which led to its failure of retaining the NJ Ryan Cup. However, it wrapped up this edition as Bowl champion. After two editions, the host, Malay College Kuala Kangsar, finally were crowned as the new champions, defeating Sekolah Menengah Sains Hulu Selangor in Cup final with score 19–7.

The MCKK Premier 7's 2014 was the fourth edition of the annual, invitational Malay College Rugby Premier Sevens, which involved teams from Malaysia premier schools, states champions and international schools. It was scheduled from 28 February till 2 March 2014. For the fourth edition of the Tournament, the number of international teams invited has increased from three teams in the previous Tournament to five teams. This year, teams from New Zealand and South Africa, two Test Playing Rugby Nations, will feature for the first time in the Tournament together with debutant Singapore. Thailand and Hong Kong will also be returning this year. The tournament is also on the verge of being recognized by International Rugby Board with help by Malaysian Rugby Union. The tagline for this tournament is "Premiering Talent and Sportsmanship". Initially, Brunei Sports School were confirmed of participating the events before pulling out in the final minute.

The MCKK Premier 7's 2015 is the fifth edition of the annual, invitational Malay College Rugby Premier Sevens, which involved teams from Malaysia premier schools, states champions and international schools. It were scheduled from 28 February till 1 March 2015. The international teams again return to three compare to previous Tournament of five teams. Hong Kong Sports School, dethroned the defending champion, Scots College with score 31–12 in the tournament first nonlocals final.

Sekolah Menengah Sains Tapah is a Malaysian government boarding school located in the town of Tapah, Perak. It occupies an area of 30 acre land, four kilometers from the town. It began its operation on 12 April 2010.

The MCKK Premier 7's 2020 is the tenth edition of the annual, invitational Malay College Rugby Premier Sevens, which involved teams from Malaysia premier schools, states champions and international schools. It was scheduled from 28 February through 1 March 2020. Three international teams were initially scheduled to participate but cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. English College Johore Bahru won the tournament for the first time since the competition inception.
