SM Station is a digital music project by South Korean record label SM Entertainment. It undertook to release one digital single every Friday starting from February 3, 2016. [1] The project's first season ended on February 3, 2017, with 52 songs. Its second season began on March 31, 2017, and concluded on April 6, 2018, with a total of 57 songs. In 2022, it introduced NCT Lab, a sub-project dedicated to individual projects for NCT members.

Contents

History

SM Station's purpose was to showcase SM Entertainment's artists and producers, while also including collaborations with artists outside of the label. [2] The project began on February 3, 2016, with the release of its first single "Rain" by Taeyeon. [3] The song proved successful, topping the South Korean Gaon Digital Chart and winning first place on the weekly music show Inkigayo . [4] [5] Subsequent singles that entered top 10 on the Gaon Digital Chart include "Spring Love" by Wendy and Eric Nam, "The Day" by Baekhyun and K.Will, "No Matter What" by BoA and Beenzino, "Dancing King" by Exo and Yoo Jae-suk, "Always in My Heart" by Joy and Seulong, and "Sweet Dream" by Kim Hee-chul and Min Kyung-hoon. "Rain" and "Spring Love" received various nominations at year-end music awards, among which "Rain" won a Digital Bonsang at the 31st Golden Disk Awards and "Sweet Dream" won a Best Rock Song at the MelOn Music Awards. The first season ended on February 3, 2017, with the 52nd single "Curtain" by Suho.

Station's second season was to feature collaborations with foreign musicians, besides past projects. [6] It began on March 31, 2017, with the first single "Would U" by Red Velvet. On April 6, 2017, SM Entertainment released a compilation album titled SM Station Season 1 which contains the first season's 52 singles and five bonus tracks. [7] The second season concluded on April 6, 2018, with "New Heroes" by NCT member Ten. [8]

In August 2018, SM Entertainment announced a special season titled Station X 0 (Station Young), in collaboration with SK Telecom's "0 (Young)" mobile brand. [lower-alpha 1] According to the label, Station X 0 is a cultural project for the young generation. [10] The season ended on October 19, 2018, with "Written in the Stars" by Wendy and John Legend. A project girl group, Station Young, consisting of Red Velvet's Seulgi, (G)I-dle's Soyeon, GFriend's SinB and soloist Chungha was formed for the single "Wow Thing" for the album.

A third season was announced in November 2018. [11] The first single would be released by Lucas and Jonah Nilsson of Swedish band Dirty Loops. [12] The season ended with "Long Flight" by Taeyong, released on July 18, 2019.

On November 15, 2019, SM Entertainment uploaded a trailer featuring Jaehyun, announcing the fourth season titled Station X. [13] The season began on November 20 with a collaboration single with UNICEF "This is Your Day (for every child, UNICEF)", by BoA, Siwon, J-Min, Sunny, Taemin, Suho, Wendy, and Doyoung. [14]

On July 27, 2020, SM Entertainment announced a special project titled Our Beloved BoA featuring covers of BoA's top hits to commemorate the 20th anniversary of her debut. It began on July 31, with the first single "Garden in the Air" by Baekhyun, from BoA's fifth Korean studio album Girls on Top . [15]

NCT Lab

On January 28, 2022, SM Entertainment announced a special project titled NCT Lab, which will feature solo or unit songs made by NCT members. It began on February 4, with the release of Mark's first single, "Child". [16] The second single, "Conextion (Age of Light)", sung by Doyoung, Mark and Haechan, [17] was released on March 20 as a collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency, who used it as the theme song for their "Gwanghwa Era" project. It features modern instruments and traditional Korean instruments including the gayageum, janggu, taepyeongso and gong. The performance video features Shotaro as a dancer. [18] [19] As of July 2023, there have been a total of six singles released under NCT Lab, including "Forever Only" by Jaehyun, [20] "Birthday" by Ten, [21] "Rain Day" by Kun, Taeil, and Yangyang, [22] and "Golden Hour" by Mark. [23]

In August 2023, it was announced that NCT Lab would continue as a separate project from SM Station. [24] It began with a solo single by Jaehyun titled "Horizon", released on August 8. [25] [26]

NCT is a South Korean boy band formed and managed by SM Entertainment. Introduced in January 2016, the group currently consists of 27 members divided into six different sub-units: NCT U, NCT 127, NCT Dream, WayV, NCT DoJaeJung, and NCT Tokyo. They are notable for their versatility in music, vocal and rap abilities, and powerful performances, and have been cited as K-pop's "most experimental boy band" due to their concept of having limitless members. As of May 2023, NCT has recorded more than 32 million album sales across all sub-units, making them the best-selling act under SM Entertainment and one of the best-selling K-pop artists of all-time.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">SM Rookies</span> South Korean pre-debut training team

SM Rookies is a pre-debut training team created by South Korean entertainment agency SM Entertainment in 2013, composed of trainees who have yet to join an idol group. From 2013 to 2023, the team officially introduced 35 members, of which 27 debuted under SM Entertainment in different groups: Red Velvet (4), NCT and five of its subunits (21), Aespa (1), Riize (2), and Lami as an actress.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">NCT 127</span> South Korean boy band

NCT 127 is the first fixed and second overall sub-unit of the South Korean boy band NCT, formed and managed by SM Entertainment. They originally debuted on July 7, 2016, with their debut extended play NCT #127, with an original lineup of seven members: Taeil, Taeyong, Yuta, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark, and Haechan. Three members Doyoung and Johnny joined the unit in December 2016, ahead of their second EP Limitless, while Jungwoo, the final member, was introduced in September 2018 ahead of their first studio album Regular-Irregular. They are known for their experimental hip hop-based music, which they refer to as "neo music", as well as their vocal and rap abilities, choreographies, and performances.

"Starlight" is a song recorded by South Korean singers Taeyeon and Dean for Taeyeon's second extended play Why (2016). The song was released on June 25, 2016, by SM Entertainment as the EP's lead single. The song's lyrics were penned by Jam Factory's Lee Seu-ran, while its music was composed by Jamil "Digi" Chammas, Taylor Mckall, Tay Jasper, Adrian McKinnon, Leven Kali, Sara Forsberg, and MZMC. "Starlight" is a pop and R&B song that features synthesizers in its instrumentation. Its lyrics detail a romantic relationship.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ten (singer)</span> Thai singer (born 1996)

Chittaphon Leechaiyapornkul, known professionally as Ten, is a Thai singer and dancer based in South Korea and China. He debuted with South Korean boy band NCT in 2016 as part of its first sub-unit, NCT U. Since 2019, he has been active mainly as a member of NCT's China-based unit WayV and the South Korean supergroup SuperM. Ten has also released several solo singles through the SM Station project: "Dream in a Dream" (2017), "New Heroes" (2018), "Paint Me Naked" (2021) and "Birthday" (2022).

Mark Lee, also professionally known as Mark, is a Canadian rapper, singer-songwriter and dancer based in South Korea. He is a member of the South Korean boy band NCT and its fixed sub-units NCT 127 and NCT Dream, as well as the South Korean supergroup SuperM.

SM The Performance is a dance project group, formed by SM Entertainment in 2012. The group made their first appearance on SBS Gayo Daejeon in December 2012. The group consists of members of other groups of SM, the first formation being composed of U-Know (TVXQ), Eunhyuk (Super Junior), Donghae (Super Junior), Taemin (SHINee), Minho (SHINee), Kai (EXO) and Lay (EXO).

<i>NCT 2018 Empathy</i> 2018 studio album by NCT

NCT 2018 Empathy is the debut studio album by South Korean Boy band NCT, an unlimited group project under the management of SM Entertainment. Containing a total of fourteen tracks with twelve of which were released as singles from 2016 to 2018, the album marked the first group release with eighteen members from three different units participating at the time, while being the first release to officially introduce three new members Kun, Jungwoo and Lucas. With the group's label founder Lee Soo-man serving as the executive producer, composition and production for the album was contributed by Matt Schwartz, Tommy $trate, The Stereotypes, Timothy 'Bos' Bullock, Deez, Yoo Young-jin, Ryan S. Jhun, MZMC, Adrian McKinnon, Shin Hyuk, Josh Cumbee, Andrew Choi, Sara Forsberg, LDN Noise, and others. It was released on March 14, 2018, by SM Entertainment and iriver Inc along with the album's fourth single "Touch" by the Seoul-based unit NCT 127 and "Black on Black", the first single featuring all eighteen members of the group at that time.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">WayV</span> Chinese boy group

WayV is a Chinese boy band and the fourth overall sub-unit of the South Korean boy band NCT, managed by SM's Chinese sub-label, Label V. The group is currently composed of Kun, Ten, Winwin, Xiaojun, Hendery, and Yangyang; Lucas was part of the original lineup but departed in May 2023. The group debuted on January 17, 2019, with the digital extended play (EP) The Vision.

Wong Yuk-hei, professionally known as Lucas (Korean: 루카스), is a Hong Kong rapper, singer, and model signed under SM Entertainment. He is a member of the supergroup SuperM, formerly also a member of the South Korean boy group NCT and its Chinese sub-unit WayV. In China, he has appeared as a regular cast member of the seventh and ninth season of the popular variety show Keep Running.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Four Seasons (song)</span> 2019 single by Taeyeon

"Four Seasons" is a song recorded by South Korean singer Taeyeon. Written by Kenzie, whom also co-produced the song with Afshin Salmani, Andrew Allen and Josh Cumbee, the reggae-tinged ballad was released as a digital single on March 24, 2019, by SM Entertainment and Dreamus, with an accompanying music video released two days prior to its digital release. Initially a standalone single, both the song and the B-side track "Blue" were later included as bonus tracks in the Korean release of Taeyeon's second album Purpose, released on October 28.

Lee Tae-yong, known mononymously as Taeyong, is a South Korean rapper, singer-songwriter, and dancer. He is a member and leader of South Korean boy band NCT under SM Entertainment, having debuted in the group's first sub-unit, NCT U, in 2016 and becoming the leader of its second sub-unit, NCT 127, later that year. In 2019, he debuted as a member of the South Korean supergroup SuperM, a joint project under SM Entertainment and Capitol Records. As a songwriter, Taeyong has participated in writing over 40 songs in four languages, released mostly by NCT's various units and himself as a soloist. He made his official solo debut in June 2023 with his EP Shalala, making him the first soloist from NCT.

The song was written by Jaehyun, who co-composed it with Deez and Soulfish. It is described as an R&B and soul song with elements of jazz key and rhythmic guitar riff, while its lyrics express the romantic scenery of the skyline from the point-of-view inside an airplane. "Horizon" marks Jaehyun's second solo single following "Forever Only" (2022) and his third overall single after the collaboration track "Try Again" (2017). It debuted at number 38 on South Korea's Circle Digital Chart, making it Jaehyun's highest-charting solo single and the second highest-charting single under NCT Lab.
