SS Heidberg was a cargo steamship that was built in 1943 in Sweden for a German shipping company. The Allies in 1945 took it for war reparations. She was renamed Empire Convention, and spent about nine months under United Kingdom ownership and management. In 1946 she was transferred to the Soviet Union, who renamed her Эрнст Те́льман – Ernst Thälmann. Her fate is not recorded.
Helsingborgs Varfs AB built Heidberg in Helsingborg, [1] and launched her on 6 March 1943.[ citation needed ] Her registered length was 277.6 ft (84.6 m), her beam was 41.4 ft (12.6 m), and her depth was 16.2 ft (4.9 m). Her tonnages were 1,714 GRT and 847 NRT. [1]
She had a single screw, driven by a Helsingborgs Varfs three-cylinder triple expansion engine. Steam from its low-pressure cylinder drove an exhaust steam turbine, which powered a compressor. [1] The compressor increased the pressure of steam exhausted from the high-pressure cylinder before it entered the intermediate-pressure cylinder. The pressure also increased the temperature of the steam. This reduced condensation in the intermediate- and low-pressure cylinders, increasing the engine's fuel efficiency and power. [2]
Heidberg's first owner was Aug. Bolten Wm. Miller’s Nachfolger , who registered her in Hamburg. After the German surrender in 1945, Allied forces seized her at Szczecin.
The UK Ministry of War Transport took her over, renamed her Empire Convention, and registered her in London. Her UK official number 180342 and her call sign was GMFM. The MoWT appointed Ellerman's Wilson Line to manage her. [1]
Empire Convention was one of a number of ships that the UK transferred to the Soviet Union in February 1946 under the Potsdam Agreement. [3] The Soviet Union renamed her after Ernst Thälmann, [4] who had led the Communist Party of Germany until 1933, and had been executed in Buchenwald concentration camp in 1944.
Ernst Thaelmann became part of the Sakhalin Shipping Company fleet in the Soviet Far East. [5] [6] Lloyd's Register still recorded the ship as extant in 1959. [7] She was deleted from international shipping registers in 1970.[ citation needed ]
Messina was a cargo steamship that Neptun Werft of Rostock, Germany built in 1937 for Robert M. Sloman Jr, Hamburg. In 1940 the Kriegsmarine requisitioned her. In 1945 the UK seized her as a war prize, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) who renamed her Empire Cherwell. In 1947 she was transferred to the USSR and renamed Polus (Полюс). She may have survived until the early 1960s. Her name was removed from shipping registers in 1961 and her ultimate fate is unknown.
Laksnes was a 1,587 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1927 by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany as Marquardt Petersen for German owners. She was sold in 1935 and renamed Sexta. Another sale in 1938 saw her renamed Annelis Christophersen.
Klio was a 1,403 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1924 by AG Weser, Bremen, Germany for Neptun Line. In 1945, she was seized by the Allies and passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT), renamed Empire Conclyde. In 1946, she was passed to the Soviet Union and renamed Shota Rustavelli.
Günther Russ was a 998 GRT coaster that was built in 1921 by Stettiner Oderwerke AG, Stettin for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Condorrat. She was sold into merchant service in 1947 and renamed Kenton. In 1950, she was sold to West Germany and was renamed Günther Russ, serving until 1957 when she was scrapped.
Saar was a 1,026 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1937 by Stettiner Oderwerke AG, Stettin for German owners. She was seized by the Allies at Kolding, Denmark in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Congleton. In 1946, she was passed to the Soviet Union and renamed Donetz (Донец).
Nyora was a 1,279 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1935 as Adrian by Nordseewerke, Emden for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in the Copenhagen, Denmark in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Conifer. In 1946, she was allocated to the Australian Government. In 1947, she was passed to the Australian Shipping Board and renamed Nyora.
Wickenburgh was a cargo liner that was built in 1938 as Adler by Lübecker Maschinenbau Gesellschaft, Lübeck for German owners. Requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in 1940, she was seized by the Allies in Vordingborg, Denmark in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Coningsby. In 1946, she was transferred to the Dutch Government and renamed Margeca. In 1947 she was sold into merchant service and renamed Wickenburgh. In 1953 her compound steam engine and low-pressure steam turbine were replaced with a diesel engine, with a reduction in gross register tonnage from 1,494 to 1,420. She was sold to Greek owners in 1963 and renamed Nissos Thassos. In 1970 she was sold to Panamanian owners and renamed Savilco. She was scrapped in 1984.
Marie Fisser was a 1,235 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1937 by Lübecker Flender-Werke AG, Lübeck for German owners. She was seized by the Allies at Emden in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Conisborough. In 1946, she was passed to the Soviet Union and renamed Stepan Shaumian.
Edenhurst was a cargo ship that was built in 1930 by Furness Shipbuilding Ltd, Haverton Hill-on-Tees for British owners. She was sold in 1937 to Finnish owners and renamed Ilves. In 1939, she was sold to German owners and renamed Glückauf. In 1940 she was sold and renamed Warnow and was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in that year. She was seized by the Allies in Rendsburg in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Conleven. In 1946, she was allocated to the Soviet Government and renamed Alexandr Parkhomenko(Александр Пархоменко). The ship was deleted from Lloyd's Register in 1960.
Ilse L.-M. Russ was a 1,600 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1926 by Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft, Flensburg. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945 at Kiel, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Conqueror. In 1946, she was allocated to the Norwegian Government and renamed Ekornes. She was sold into merchant service in 1947 and renamed Elfrida. She served until December 1959 when she sprang a leak and sank off the coast of Norway.
Dimitry Laptev was a 1,560 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1936 as Heinrich Schmidt by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Constable. In 1946, she was transferred to the Soviet Government and renamed Dimitry Laptev. She served until she was scrapped in 1971.
Memel was a 1,102 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1925 as Reval by Schiffs-und Dockbauwerft Flender AG, Lübeck, Germany for German owners. A sale in 1934 saw her renamed Memel. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Constellation. In 1946, she was transferred to the Soviet Union and renamed Ivan Sechenov.
V 1502 Wiking 6 was a German Vorpostenboot built in 1939 as the whaler Wiking 6. Requisition by the Kriegsmarine, she served throughout World War II as V 1502 Wiking 6 and the FlakjägerFlJ 24 Wiking 6 before being seized by the Royal Navy at Emden on 29 October 1945 and renamed Empire Viking VI. Allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946, she was renamed Slava II.
Sukhumi was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Benue in 1944 by A Vuyk & Zonen, Capelle aan den Ijssel, Overijssel, Netherlands for the Deutsche Afrika Linien, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gable. Allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946, she served until 1969 when she was scrapped at Bo'ness, Lothian, United Kingdom.
Yaroslavl was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Santander in 1943 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for the Oldenburg Portugiesische Dampschiffs Rhederei. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gage. She was chartered to the Dutch government later that year and was renamed Arnhem. Allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946, she was renamed Yaroslavl. She served until 1971, when she was scrapped.
Kazan was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Elmenhorst in 1943 by Van Vliet & Co, Hardinxveld, Netherlands for Godeffroy & Co, Hamburg, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Galleon. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and was renamed Kazan. She served until 1973 when she was scrapped.
Volochaevsk was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Weserwald in 1943 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Norddeutsche Lloyd, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Galveston. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and was renamed Volochaevsk. She served until 1973, when she was scrapped.
Olsztyn was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Imkenturm in 1944 by Werf de Noord, Alblasserdam, Netherlands for DDG Hansa, Bremen, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gantry. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and was renamed Feodosia. Sold to Poland in 1947, she was renamed Olsztyn. She served until 1972, when she was scrapped.
Filio was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Njong in 1944 by Stettiner Vulkan Werft AG, Stettin, Germany for Deutsche Afrika-Linien, Hamburg Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Garland. She was sold in 1946 and was renamed Sheldrake. She was sold to Liberia in 1959 and renamed Salamstar. Sold to Greece in 1960 and renamed Ambelos. She was sold in 1961 and renamed Marmina. A final sale in 1968 saw her renamed Filio. She served until 1972, when she was scrapped.
Ribinsk was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Hendrik Fisser VI in 1943 by NV Werft Gusto, Schiedam, Netherlands for Fisser & Van Doornum, Emden Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Garner. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and was renamed Ribinsk. She served until 1975, when she was scrapped.
