Sahdheer (Somali : Saaxdheer) is a town in southern Sool region of Somalia. [3]

Overview

Saaxdheer is on the border with Ethiopia. The town lies in the Sahader Valley, due south of Las Anod. Sahdheer lies a few miles northwest of Gumburka Cagaare, [4] the site of the greatest Darwiish victory over a joint Abyssinian-British force. The British force consisted of men from nine different regions of the world:

Within the encampment there was a strange medley of men drawn from many different corners of the Empire: From the British Isles, from South Africa, from Frontier of India, from Kenya, from the Nile, from the uplands of Central Africa, Boers and Sikhs and Sudanese: Their race had battled against the Empire not so many years before, but had since found contentment and prosperity under British rule. [5]

In August 2014, Somaliland troops marched into Sahdheer engaged pro-Khatumo State militias in battles that killed at least 10 people. [6] United States Special Representative for Somalia James P. McAnulty and others jointly expressed concern over the deployment of troops to Sahdheer. [7]

In June 2015, the President of Khatumo State, Ali Khalif Galaydh, moved his address from Buuhoodle to Sahdheer. [8] Still, in August, he moved his address to Balli Ad in Togdheer due to the approach of the Somaliland army on the outskirts of the town and protests from residents. [9]

Fighting between local clans in Dhummay, Sool, October 2018. [10] Dhummay elders blamed the Somaliland government for allowing the militia the opportunity to attack because the Somaliland army in Dhummay was moved to Sahdheer. [11]

In August 2020, a mediation meeting was held in Sahdheer due to fighting between Dhulbahante clans (Ararsame and Hayaag) in Horufadhi. [12]

In May 2021, Jaamac Faarax Xasan, Minister of Health for Puntland, visits Sahdheer. Welcomed by clan chief, Garad Jama Garad Ali. [13]

In January 2022, Somaliland's Ministry of Water Resources Development revived a well in the Sahdheer region. [14]

Demographics

The town's main inhabitants are Dhulbahante branch of the Darod, [15] with the Bahararsame sub-clan of the Farah Garad branch well represented. [16]

    Horufadhi is a town in the Togdheer region of Somalia which comes under the Buhoodle District.

    Widhwidh, also known as Widh Widh, is a town located in the Buuhoodle district of Togdheer, Somaliland.

    Garad Jama Garad Ali is the 21st supreme traditional clan Sultan (Garaad) of the Dhulbahante. He is 19th Garaad and he has significant influence in North Somalia's current politics.

    Gambadhe is a town in the Sool region of Somaliland. A dry port has been constructed in the town. The town is located roughly 30km southeast of the city of Las Anod.

    Dharkayn Geenyo is a town in the southern Sool region of Somalia.

    Adhi'adeye or Ade Adeeye is a town in the Sool region of Somalia currently under the control of Khatumo State forces. It is around 30 miles northwest of Las Anod, the regional capital of Sool.

    Ahmed Abdi Mohamud Sugulle "Habsade" is a Puntland and Somaliland politician. He was a decorated Colonel in the Somali Armed Forces and the second in command of the Somali Custodial Corps equivalent to that of the Italian Arma dei Carabinieri but the Custodial Corps fall under the Ministry of the Interior and are part of the Police Force. A politician and respected elder later in life (he was instrumental in the founding of Somaliland and became the Speaker of the Somaliland House of Representatives. In 1998, he was appointed Minister of the Interior of Puntland but was dismissed in 2007 after a conflict with Mohamud Muse Hersi, who became President of Puntland in 2006. In 2007, he brought Somaliland troops into Las Anod, leading to Somaliland's effective control of the Sool region. He served as various Somaliland Ministers of state from 2008. In 2014, Abdiweli Gaas became President of Puntland and he come back to Puntland.

    Hassan Dahir Afqurac is a Somali politician who was the Vice President of Puntland from January 2005 to January 2009. later died due to Liver disease in Nairobi.

    Garad Abdullah Garaf Soofe Durraan, Garad, of the Ahmed Garad, the second most senior chief of the Farah Garad branch of the Dhulbahante clan of the Somali people. He was one of the elders of the Dhulbahante clan. In his later years, he often attended meetings as a representative of the Buuhoodle.

    The Las Anod conflict is an ongoing armed conflict between the Somaliland National Army and the SSC-Khatumo forces of the Dhulbahante in Las Anod, the capital of the Sool region. Fighting erupted on February 6 after Somaliland security forces held a violent crackdown on civil protests. On February 8, the supreme Garad of Dhulbahante, Garad Jama Garad Ali, declared an intent to secede and reunite with the Federal Government of Somalia.
