Saliu Atawodi, [1] Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), is a retired Air Vice Marshal of the Nigerian Air Force. Atawodi served as the chairman of the Presidential Implementation Committee on Maritime Security and Safety (PICOMSS) from its inception until its dissolution. [2] The Federal Government disbanded PICOMSS following its refusal to merge with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), leading to a jurisdictional conflict over control of the nation's waterways.
Atawodi was born on July 4, 1952, at Idah General Hospital in Idah Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria. [3] He completed his primary education in Ajaka/Idah and attended the Nigerian Military School, Zaria, from 1967 to 1971. [4] In 1972, he joined the Nigerian Defence Academy as part of the Regular Cadet Course 12 and was commissioned into the Nigerian Air Force as a Pilot Officer on December 14, 1974.[ citation needed ]
Atawodi was the first Nigerian [5] to complete an advanced fast jet flying course at the Royal Air Force, Valley, North Wales, UK, on the Hunter Aircraft. He subsequently attended the fast jet instructor's course with the Pakistan Air Force in Risalpur and graduated from the Air War College, Karachi, Pakistan, an affiliate of Karachi University. In 2005, Atawodi was awarded the National Honor of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR).[ citation needed ]
Atawodi is an experienced fighter pilot, having flown various aircraft in the [6] Nigerian Air Force inventory and internationally, including the Bulldog, Jet Provost MK3A, Jet Provost MK4A, Hunter T7, Hunter F6, Hawk, and T-37, as well as the Mig 15, Mig 17, Mig 21, and Alpha jet. In 1983, Atawodi led the Mig 21 deployment in support of a Nigerian Army operation. In 1988, he designed and constructed [7] the Air Force Air to Ground Firing Range in Kwenev Makurdi and became the first NAF Fighter Pilot to deploy the Air to Air Missile at the same range.[ citation needed ]
For over eight years, he led the Mig 21 aerobatic display team, garnering significant recognition within the Nigerian Air Force. [8] Appointed as director of the Directorate of Food, Roads, and Rural Infrastructure (DFRRI) by General Fidelis Atahiru Makka in Benue State in 1988, Atawodi, then a squadron leader, improved the performance of Benue DFRRI from 19th to 4th among Nigerian states within a year.
As Director of DFRRI in the then Benue State, [8] Atawodi significantly impacted rural communities by constructing over 1700 kilometers of roads and electrifying 19 towns and villages. Notable among these were Ushongo and Achuwa in the Tiv-speaking area, Upu-London and Ogoli-Ogboju in the Idoma area, and Ojoku and Ajaka in the Igala-speaking area. [9] He played a pivotal role in the creation of the Igalamela Local Government Area in 1995, leading the lobby group for its establishment. A strong supporter of church and mosque building projects across Igala land, Atawodi also runs a private scholarship sponsorship project benefiting several youths.[ citation needed ]

After his military career, [12] Atawodi served as the Chairman of Vector Integrated Services Ltd, representing Eco-Gen California, USA, in 2022. A keen lawn tennis player, he established the SAA Tennis Foundation, a non-profit organization that organizes tournaments for young tennis talents, fostering their development. Atawodi holds several traditional titles, [13] including Amana-Achofe by His Royal Majesty the Attah Igala in 1985, Dikenagha in 2007 from Bende in Abia State, Oga Etemahi Igalamela in 2008, and Ohioma Ejeh Ankpa in 2009. He was also a gubernatorial candidate [14] in the 2011 Kogi State election and, in 2022, became Chairman of OMNI First Network Services.
In 2016, [15] the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the forfeiture of properties and cash belonging to Saliu Atawodi, worth over $200,000 and N120 million, based on an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [8] (EFCC) alleging the properties were suspected proceeds of crime. However, on June 7, 2017, Justice Hassan-Yusuf overruled the previous judgment, declaring that Atawodi had no case to answer and acquitting him of all charges.
Kogi State is a state in the North Central region of Nigeria, bordered to the west by the states of Ekiti and Kwara, to the north by the Federal Capital Territory, to the northeast by Nasarawa State, to the northwest by Niger State, to the southwest by the Edo and Ondo states, to the southeast by the states of Anambra and Enugu, and to the east by Benue State. It is the only state in Nigeria to border ten other states. Named after the Hausa word for river (Kogi). Kogi State was formed from parts of Benue State, Niger State, and Kwara State on 27 August 1991. The state is nicknamed the "Confluence State" due to the fact that the confluence of the River Niger and the River Benue occurs next to its capital, Lokoja.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is the air branch of the Nigerian Armed Forces. It is the youngest branch of the Nigerian Armed Forces, established four years after the nation became independent. As at 2021, the air force is one of the largest in Africa, consisting of over 18,000 personnel. Some of its popular aircraft include the Chengdu F-7s, Dassault-Dornier Alpha Jets, JF-17 Thunder Block II, T129 Atak, Agusta Westland 109, Eurocopter EC135 and Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano.
Benue State is one of the North Central states in Nigeria with a population of about 4,253,641 in the 2006 census. The state was created in 1976 and was among the seven states created at that time. The state derives its name from the Benue River initially called Ber-nor, a compound word in Tiv language which means river or lake of hippopotamus the name Ber-nor was corrupted to BENUE by colonial masters, the river is the second largest river in Nigeria after the River Niger. The state borders Nasarawa State to the North; Taraba State to the East; Kogi State to the West; Enugu State to the South-West; Ebonyi and Cross-Rivers State to the South; and has an international border with Cameroon to the South-East. It is inhabited predominantly by the Tiv, Idoma and Igede people. Minority ethnic groups in Benue are Etulo, Igbo, hausa and Jukun people etc. Its capital is Makurdi. Benue is a rich agricultural region; common crops cultivated in the state include oranges, yams, mangoes, sweet potatoes, cassava, soya bean, guinea corn, flax, sesame, rice, groundnuts and palm trees.
Lokoja is a north-central city in Nigeria. It lies at the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers and is the capital city of Kogi State. While the Bassa Nge, Yoruba (Oworo) and Nupe are indigenous to the area, other ethnic groups, including the Kupa-Nupe, Hausa, Ebira, Igala, Igbo, Bini/Edo, and Tiv have recently established themselves. Lokoja is projected to be the third fastest growing city on the African continent between 2020 and 2025, with a 5.93% growth rate. It was listed as a second class township by the 1917 township ordinance of the colonial administration, indicating that Lokoja is an old city.
Nasarawa State is a state in the North Central region of Nigeria, bordered to the east by the states of Taraba and Plateau, to the north by Kaduna State, to the south by the states of Benue and Kogi, and to the west by the Federal Capital Territory. Named for the historic Nasarawa Emirate, the state was formed from the west of Plateau State on 1 October 1996. The state has thirteen local government areas and its capital is Lafia, located in the east of the state, while a key economic centre of the state is the Karu Urban Area—suburbs of Abuja—along the western border with the FCT.
The Idomas are people that primarily inhabit the lower western areas of Benue State, Nigeria, and some of them can be found in Taraba State, Cross Rivers State, Enugu State, Kogi State and Nasarawa State in Nigeria. The Idoma language is classified in the Akweya subgroup of the Idomoid languages of the Volta–Niger family, which include Igede, Alago, Agatu, Etulo, Ete, Akweya (Akpa) and Yala languages of Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Enugu, and Northern Cross River states. The Akweya subgroup is closely related to the Yatye-Akpa subgroup. The bulk of the territory is inland, south of river Benue, some seventy-two kilometres east of its confluence with River Niger. The Idoma tribe are known to be 'warriors' and 'hunters' of class, but hospitable and peaceloving. The greater part of Idoma land remained largely unknown to the West until the 1920s, leaving much of the colourful traditional culture of the Idoma intact. The population of the Idomas is estimated to be about 3.5 million. The Idoma people have a traditional ruler called the Och'Idoma who is the head of the Idoma Area Traditional Council. This was introduced by the British. Each community has its own traditional chief such as the former Ad'Ogbadibo of Orokam, Late Chief D.E Enenche. The Palace of the Och'Idoma is located at Otukpo, Benue State. The present Och'Idoma, HRM, Elaigwu Odogbo John, the 5th Och'Idoma of the Idoma People was installed on the 30th of June, 2022 following the passing of his Predecessor HRH Agabaidu Elias Ikoyi Obekpa who ruled from 1996 to October 2021. Past Och'Idomas also include: HRH, Agabaidu Edwin Ogbu, who reigned from 1996 to 1997, HRH, Abraham Ajene Okpabi of Igede descent who ruled from 1960 to 1995 and HRH, Agabaidu Ogiri Oko whose reign took place between 1948 and 1959.
Ibrahim Idris is a Nigeria politician and businessman who served as the governor of Kogi State from 2003 to 2008 and from 2008 to 2012. He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Idris was succeeded by his brother-in-law Captain Idris Wada, who won election in December 2011 and took office in January 2012.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is a Nigerian law enforcement and anti-graft agency that investigates financial crimes and unknown transactions such as advance fee fraud and money laundering. The EFCC was established in 2003, partially in response to pressure from the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF), which named Nigeria as one of 23 countries non-cooperative in the international community's efforts to fight money laundering. The agency has its head office in Abuja, Nigeria. The EFCC was also set up to fight against corruption and protect the country from economic saboteurs.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Idah is a Latin suffragan diocese located in the city of Idah, Kogi State in the ecclesiastical province of Abuja, in Nigeria, yet remains subject to the Roman missionary Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
Group Captain Joshua Obademi was Administrator of Benue State, Nigeria from December 1993 to August 1996 during the military regime of General Sani Abacha.

Ogwu James Onoja, SAN, FCArb, born 19 February 1968 in Idah, Kogi State, is a legal practitioner and notary public with the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Onoja has authored several publications on legal and social subjects in Nigeria, including The Supreme Court Rules: Practice and Procedure and The Court of Appeal Rules: Practice and Procedure, both published in 2010; the Federal High Court Rules: Practice and Procedure, volumes 1 and 2, published in 2012; and Fundamental Rights Rules, 2009 published in 2021.
Samuel Ioraer Ortom is a Nigerian politician, businessman, administrator and philanthropist. He was a Minister of State Trade and Investments in Nigeria during the presidency of Goodluck Jonathan. Ortom was elected governor of Benue State as a member of the All Progressives Congress in 2015, though later defecting to the People's Democratic Party. He was re-elected as governor on 29 May 2019. Ortom's tenure ended on 29 May 2023, succeeded by a Catholic priest of the opposition party, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia.

Ochapa Onazi was educated at the Boys’ Secondary School, Gindiri, and the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Master of Science (MSc) from the University of London and a Diploma from Imperial College (DIC) London. Ochapa Onazi graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Agricultural Education from Kansas State University, United States of America (USA), where he was supervised by Professor Robert Johnson.
Francis Sulemanu Idachaba, NNOM, OFR was a Nigerian professor of Agricultural Economics, chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian National Merit Award and vice chancellor of Kogi State University. He was the first vice chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, a position he held from 1988 to 1995.
Ahmadu Adah Ali is a retired Nigerian military officer, a physician and a politician. He was born in Idah, Igala Kingdom. Ali served as the Deputy Director of Army Medical Services and Chief Consulting Physician of the Military Hospital, Kaduna. In 1973, he became the first Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, a position he held until 1975 when he was appointed Minister of Education. He served also as Chairman of the PDP National Working Committee from 2005 to 2007.
David Idris Zacharias, is a politician, and member representing Idah, Ibaji, Igalamela Ofu federal Constituency in the Nigeria Federal House of Representatives. He holds membership assignment on the House Committees on Appropriation, Ecological Fund and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP). In September 2019, he supported a motion calling on Nigeria Boundary Commission to resolve the lingering boundary dispute involving his constituents in Ibaji local council of Kogi State and Enugu Otu in Enugu State. He is a business man with major interest in real estate and CEO Eden Multibiz Project Ltd., an Africa proprietary firm. He is a co-founder and chairman of the board of directors, Maina Court Facility Management Services Ltd and founder David Zacharias Foundation, a non-profit humanitarian organization.

The 2023 Kogi State gubernatorial election was held on 11 November 2023 to elect the Governor of Kogi State. Incumbent APC Governor Yahaya Bello was term-limited and could not seek re-election to a third term in office. The primaries were scheduled for between 27 March and 17 April 2022.
