Early life

Shah was born in the United Kingdom to immigrant parents from Pakistan. [2]

Career

Previously, Salma Shah worked as a journalist at the BBC, producing programmes such as Today on BBC Radio 4. [3] Shah worked as a special adviser in the Conservative government. [4] She specialised in public policy. [5] Shah was an adviser to Sajid Javid when he was Home Secretary. [6] She had also a special adviser at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. [7] When Javid was promoted to Chancellor of the Exchequer she followed him to HM Treasury. [8] She left government in 2019 when Boris Johnson became Prime Minister. [9] It was reported that she had been forced out by Dominic Cummings. [10] [11]

She later worked for Portland Communications. [12] In 2022, she joined Mitie as a non-executive director. [13] Later as a political commentator she has commented on English devolution [14] and police reform. [15] Shah has been awarded for political journalism. [16] She is a fellow of the Centre for Science and Policy. [17]

Shah is a regular panellist on shows including Sophy Ridge on Sunday [18] Good Morning Britain, [19] Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg and BBC Politics Live. [20] She will appear on Have I Got News for You on 10 October 2025. [21]

Personal life

Her husband Andrew Smith, served as lord mayor of Westminster. [22]
