Samuel Elias Polinsky (born August 9, 1989) is an American professional wrestler and promoter, performing on the independent circuit and for Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA) under the ring name Sam Adonis. Adonis formerly worked in Mexico's Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) as a heel pro-Trump character and currently works for DTU, IWRG, Toryumon Mexico and the Mexican Independent circuit. He has also competed in the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA).

Polinsky has briefly worked for WWE, in their Florida Championship Wrestling developmental league, under the name Buddy Stretcher and worked a match for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling under the name Bill Callous, but has spent the majority of his pro wrestling career in England working for various promotions such as All Star Wrestling.

Professional wrestling career

Early career (2008–2011)

Polinsky made his professional wrestling debut in early 2008, working primarily on the independent circuit in his native Pennsylvania. He would often team with his brother Matthew, better known under the ring name Sterling James Keenan while Sam Polinsky was known as "Samuel Elias" or simply "Sam Elias". The brothers competed in a 2008 tournament for the local Pittsburgh Tag Team Championship, but lost in the final to the team of Ashton Amherst and Patrick Hayes. [3] In 2009 Elias began teaming with Amherst, following a tag team known as "Vicious and Delicious", who won the Diamond Championship Wrestling (DCW) Tag Team Championship from the PA Posse (Kato and Sebastian). [4] Their reign lasted for 70 days, until they lost the title to "Team Tap Out" on March 6, 2010. [5]

In the fall of 2010, he began working for Far North Wrestling (FNW), based out of Pittsburgh. During his time with FNW he won the Ches-A-Rena Championship on three separate occasions, defeating T. Rantula, Michael Blade and Jimmy Vegas respectively to win the championship. [5] The promotion closed in 2011, leaving Sam Elias as the last recognized Ches-A-Rena Champion. [6]

WWE

Florida Championship Wrestling (2011)

In April 2011 Polinsky, using the ring name "Buddy Stretcher", began working for WWE's developmental league, Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW). [7] Polinsky suffered a knee injury after only two matches with FCW and was later released. [8]

Europe (2011–2016)

While Polinsky was not successful in FCW he did strike up a friendship with WWE wrestler William Regal who used his contacts to get Polinsky work in the United Kingdom for All Star Wrestling. [8] Polinsky began working under the name "Sam Adonis", a vain, self-obsessed, narcissistic heel. [8] While living in England for several years he also worked for other European wrestling promotions such as the European Wrestling Promotion in Germany, [9] and New Wrestling Entertainment in Italy. [10] In 2014 he participated in ASW's "King of the Ring" tournament, defeating Mexx in the first round, but losing to Dean Allmark in the second round. [11]

In November 2015, Adonis won the British Heavyweight Championship, sometimes referred to as the "SuperSlam" championship, becoming the first American to win the championship. [12] In April 2016 he returned to the United States and at some point later was officially stripped of the championship for lack of defenses. [13] On April 27, 2017 Polinsky worked on an episode of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling's television show under the name "Bill Callous", losing to Ethan Carter III. [14]

Mexico (2016–2018)

On May 1, 2016, Adonis worked his first match in Mexico, defending the British Heavyweight Championship against Mexican wrestler Black Fire, on a Desastre Total Ultraviolento (DTU) show. [15] A few weeks later he began working for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), Mexico's largest and the world's oldest wrestling promotion. His first major appearance was for the 2016 version of the International Grand Prix, a 16-man tournament featuring native Mexican wrestlers facing foreigners. Adonis was the fourth wrestler eliminated, pinned by Rush. [16] From that point on Adonis began working for CMLL on a regular basis, although he was not signed to a long-term contract with the company.

In the fall of 2016, Polinsky approached the CMLL promoters with a suggestion to tweak his "pretty boy" character, playing off the political situation of the time. [17] With CMLL's approval Sam Adonis became a staunch Donald Trump supporter, including waving a four-foot-long US flag emblazoned with Trump's face as he played off the then-President Elect's stance on Mexico and immigrants. [8] He later had a pair of wrestling trunks airbrushed to feature the face of Donald Trump on the back, in a homage to wrestler Rick Rude, to further the "Pro Trump" image. [18] The character was so successful that one magazine said that Adonis "might be the most hated man in Mexico". [2] When Okumura returned to CMLL, Adonis quickly added the follow foreigner as part of team. During a match, teammates Johnny Idol and Valiente had problems with each other and Idol turned heel after that match and Idol became part of Okumura and Adonis's team, in mid 2018 he parted ways with CMLL.

In 2017 he began working for Ultimo Dragon's Toryumon Mexico, and their AJPW/Toryumon Mexico Lucha Fiesta Ultimo Dragon Anniversary shows.

Japan (2017–present)

On August 19, 2017, Adonis appeared in All Japan Pro Wrestling/Toryumon Mexico, teaming with Joe Doering and Diamante against Ultimo Dragon, Jun Akiyama and Caristico for Ultimo's 30th anniversary in Japan; they were defeated in a two-out-of-three falls bout. During the match Adonis ripped Ultimo's mask. He is the only pro wrestler to remove Ultimo Dragon's mask in both Japan and Mexico.

Major League Wrestling (2022–present)

Adonis made his Major League Wrestling debut against Jacob Fatu. This match gained some publicity as Fatu in real life is dating Adonis' now ex-girlfriend.

Personal life

Polinsky was born in 1989 and is of Hungarian descent. He is the son of professional wrestling promoter Dan Polinsky who helped organize shows in his native Pittsburgh. [2] His older brother is retired professional wrestler-turned-color commentator Matthew Polinsky, better known under the ring name Corey Graves and formerly known as Sterling James Keenan. [8] Sam was trained by his older brother for his professional wrestling career. In subsequent years, Sam Polinsky has stated that he never wanted to exploit the fact that his brother was a well known "name" in professional wrestling, preferring to make it on his own merit. [19]

When US news outlets picked up on the story of Polinsky playing a "pro Trump" character in Mexico Polinsky was quoted as stating:

I can't say I support Trump but I definitely respect Trump. He is just himself, and if you like it, you like it, and if you don't, you don't.

He also made a point that the "Sam Adonis" character did not reflect his personal beliefs, especially his feelings for Mexico and Mexicans in general, pointing out that he had a Mexican girlfriend. [8]

Toryumon is the name of several professional wrestling promotions that have operated in Japan and Mexico. The promotions were owned and operated by Yoshihiro Asai, who is best known under the ring name Último Dragón. Toryumon is a coined word that means Fighting Dragon Gate. The word was derived from the homonym Tōryūmon (登龍門) that literally means climbing up the dragon gate. The Toryumon Mexico promotion was originally created to give graduates of the Último Dragón Gym a promotion to gain their initial in-ring experience in. Its Japan-based sister promotion Toryumon Japan developed a major cult following and grew into becoming one of the hottest independent promotions in the country. The promotion would run for five years. On July 4, 2004, Último Dragón left the promotion and took the name and trademarks with him. Toryumon Japan's wrestlers and officials decided to form a new promotion, adopting the name Dragon Gate and continuing in the traditions of Toryumon. Since then Último Dragón would continue to promote Toryumon events mainly in Mexico but also has occasionally held shows in Japan until 2020 when he signed with Dragongate.

Juan Carlos Baños is a Mexican professional wrestler or "Luchador" known as Lizmark Jr. or El Hijo de Lizmark. Baños previously worked for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre and AAA. Lizmark Jr. works as a Rudo and has been a part of the Los Perros del Mal stable.

Genaro Vázquez Nevarez is a Mexican professional wrestler and trainer, best known under his ring name Blue Panther. He made his in-ring debut in 1978. Since then, he has worked for most major Mexican professional wrestling promotions, including the Universal Wrestling Association (UWA), Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) and Asistencia, Asesoría y Administración (AAA). He was one of the first wrestlers to leave CMLL for AAA when it was created in 1992, but returned to CMLL in 1997 where he has competed ever since.

The CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship is a professional wrestling world heavyweight championship promoted by Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) since 1991. As it is a professional wrestling championship, it is not won via legitimate competition; it is instead won via a scripted ending to a match or on occasion awarded to a wrestler because of a storyline. The official definition of the light heavyweight division in Mexico is between 92 kg (203 lb) and 97 kg (214 lb), but the weight limits are not always strictly adhered to. Because CMLL puts more emphasis on the lower weight classes, this division is considered more important than the heavyweight division, which is considered the most important championship by most promotions outside Mexico. The current champion is Averno, who is in his first reign. He defeated Bárbaro Cavernario at Homenaje a Dos Leyendas on March 29, 2024. He is the 18th overall champion and the 16th wrestler to officially hold the championship. The title has been vacated twice since its creation in 1991, and has had one unofficial reign.

Ricardo Fuentes Romero is a second-generation Mexican professional wrestler, known by his ring name Ricky Marvin, and is most known for his work in the Japanese promotion Pro Wrestling Noah. Between 2005 and 2007, he also wrestled as the masked Mushiking Joker character, a storyline arch-enemy of "Mushiking Terry", who was played by his then-tag team partner Kotaro Suzuki. Oziel Toscano Jasso is a Mexican professional wrestler, or Luchador as they are known in Spanish. He has achieved most success under the ring names Tarzan Boy and Toscano. After making his professional wrestling debut in 1993 he has worked for a number of notable professional wrestling promotions in and outside of Mexico such as Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre, AAA, the World Wrestling Federation, International Wrestling Revolution Group, and Promo Azteca. Toscano's ring character is that of a Latin hearth-throb. He has also competed under the ring names Armando Fernandez, Baby Toscano/Babe Toscano, Tarzan Toscano, and Zorro during his career.

Efrén Tiburcio Márquez, known under the ring name Mr. Niebla, was a Mexican luchador enmascarado who worked for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). "Niebla" is Spanish for "fog". His in-ring style focused more on comedy, which often included pratfalls, dancing and mocking his opponents during matches.

Norberto Salgado Salcedo is a retired Mexican luchador, primarily known under the ring name Pierroth Jr. Salgado made his professional wrestling debut on July 1, 1984, working as a luchador enmascarado, or masked wrestler, using the name Pierroth Jr. He lost his mask as a result of losing a Lucha de Apuestas to La Parka in 1998. In the late 1990s Pierroth became known as Comandante Pierroth or simply Pierroth, leader of a faction of pro-Puerto Rican wrestlers in CMLL known as Los Boricuas, notwithstanding him being born in Mexico. After suffering a stroke in November 2008 Salgado retired from wrestling. Several other wrestlers have used the name Pierroth or derivatives thereof over the years, with approval from Salgado, currently Pierrothito is the only wrestler actively using the name.

DMT Azul is the best known ring name of a Mexican Luchador Enmascarado, or masked professional wrestler. He is signed to Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. Azul is best known for his time in Mexican professional wrestling promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). He originally wrestled under the ring name El Romano but in 2009 he was given a new name and mask, Metro, a ring name that had been used by at least three other CMLL wrestlers before 2009. The "Metro" ring character was sponsored by the Mexico City Metro newspaper, incorporating the newspapers logo and color scheme in the mask and wrestling trunks. In early 2012 he was given a new image and ring name, dropping the sponsored ring name to become Diamante Azul instead. Diamante Azul is Spanish for "Blue Diamond".
