Samantha Virgo (born 20 February 1987) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Brisbane and Gold Coast in the AFL Women's. She was selected in the All-Australian team in 2017, and co-captained Gold Coast from 2020 to 2021.
Virgo was born in 1987 in Blackwood, South Australia. She won the club best and fairest at Griffith-Moorooka in 2015 and was equal winner of the Queensland Women's AFL (QWAFL) best and fairest in 2016 while playing at Yeronga South Brisbane. [3] [4]
Virgo was recruited by Brisbane with the number 66 pick in the 2016 AFL Women's draft. [5] She was announced as one of the Brisbane Lions' "values leaders" to assist captain Emma Zielke alongside Emily Bates, Sabrina Frederick-Traub and Leah Kaslar in January 2017. [6] She made her debut in the Lions' inaugural game against Melbourne at Casey Fields on 5 February 2017. [7] She was nominated by her teammates for the 2017 AFLW Players' most valuable player award, [8] and was also listed in the 2017 All-Australian team. [9]
Brisbane signed Virgo for the 2018 season during the trade period in May 2017. [10] She missed that season through injury, and instead acted as team manager for the Lions.[ citation needed ] She returned to playing for the 2019 season as one of three vice-captains under Kaslar.[ citation needed ]
Following the 2019 season, Virgo joined Gold Coast. [11] She was appointed co-captain in January 2020. [12] Virgo retired at the end of the 2021 season. [13]

The Queensland Australian Football League Women's (QAFLW) is the highest-ranked Australian rules football women's league in Queensland. It provides elite women footballers the opportunity to play in a semi-professional environment. Many players from this league have represented their State, earned All-Australian honours, and participated in AFLW.
Emily Bates is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Hawthorn Football Club in the AFL Women's (AFLW). She previously played for the Brisbane Lions from 2017 to season 7. Bates was selected by the Western Bulldogs in the inaugural national women's draft in 2013, and represented them in the first three years of the exhibition games staged prior to the creation of the league. She represented Brisbane in 2016, the last year that the games were held, and was drafted by the club with the second selection in the 2016 AFL Women's draft prior to the inaugural AFL Women's season.

The 2020 AFL Women's season was the fourth season of the AFL Women's (AFLW) competition, the highest-level senior women's Australian rules football competition in Australia. The season featured 14 clubs and ran from 7 February to 22 March; it was intended to comprise an eight-round home-and-away season followed by a three-week finals series featuring the top three clubs from each conference, however the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March saw the season curtailed and finally abandoned without a premiership being awarded.
