Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge (born 4 August 1977) is a Congolese politician from the former Katanga Province who served as Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 2021 [1] to 2024. [2] He announced his first cabinet on 12 April 2021. [3] He is a member of the Future of Congo party.
Lukonde was born on 4 August 1977,in Paris,and is an engineer by training. [5] He is the son of Stéphane Lukonde Kyenge ,an important figure in the political scene of his native Katanga who was assassinated in 2001. [6]
After being active in politics as a member of the Avenir du Congo (English,Future of Congo) party,and becoming one of the youngest deputy at the National Assembly,Lukonde was named Minister of Youth,Sports,and Leisure in December 2014,during the Joseph Kabila Presidency. [6] He served in this position for 10 months,before resigning to support his party in their opposition to Kabila's bid for a third successive term as President. [6]
In June 2019,Lukonde became the Director-General of Gécamines:one of the largest mining companies in Africa,and the biggest in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was appointed to this position by President Félix Tshisekedi in June 2019. [7] Prior to this position,he was also deputy general administrator of the Congo National Railway Company. [8]
He was named Prime Minister by Tshisekedi in February 2021. [9] He later named his cabinet. [10] On 20 February 2024,Lukonde tendered his resignation to President Tshisikedi [11] after he decided to join the National Assembly as a member from the Kasenga Territory,having won the seat during the general election of December 2023. [12] He served as acting prime minister until the installation of a new government [13] led by former planning minister Judith Tuluka on 12 June 2024. [2]
On August 12,2024,Sama Lukonde Kyenge was elected president of the senate,with 84 votes out of 96. [14]

He was Governor of Katanga Province,located in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo,from 2007 to September 2015. He has been described by The Economist as "probably the second most powerful man in the Democratic Republic of Congo after the president,Joseph Kabila". General elections were held in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on 30 December 2018,to determine a successor to President Joseph Kabila,as well as for the 500 seats of the National Assembly and the 715 elected seats of the 26 provincial assemblies. Félix Tshisekedi (UDPS) won the presidency with 38.6% of the vote,defeating Martin Fayulu and Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary (PPRD). Fayulu alleged that the vote was rigged against him by Tshisekedi and Kabila,challenging the result in the Constitutional Court. Election observers,including the Catholic Church,also cast doubt on the official result. Nonetheless,on 20 January the Court declared Tshisekedi the winner. Parties supporting Kabila won the majority of seats in the National Assembly. Tshisekedi was sworn in as the 5th President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on 24 January 2019,the first peaceful transition of power in the country since its independence from Belgium in 1960.

Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo is a Congolese politician who has been the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 24 January 2019. He is the leader of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS),the DRC's oldest and largest party,succeeding his late father Étienne Tshisekedi in that role,a three-time Prime Minister of Zaire and opposition leader during the reign of Mobutu Sese Seko. Tshisekedi was the UDPS party's candidate for president in the December 2018 general election,which he was awarded,despite accusations of irregularities from several election monitoring organisations and other opposition parties. The Constitutional Court of the DRC upheld his victory after another opposition politician,Martin Fayulu,challenged the result,but Tshisekedi has been accused of making a deal with his predecessor,Joseph Kabila. Sylvestre Ilunga Ilunkamba is a Congolese politician who was appointed as the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May 2019,formally establishing his government in August 2019. He has had a long political career going back to the 1970s,having held a number of ministerial cabinet posts,and was previously a professor at the University of Kinshasa since 1979. Ilunga has also been the secretary general of Congo's national railway company. He has a reputation as an experienced public servant and technocrat,as well as an ally of former President Joseph Kabila.
The Common Front for Congo,also known as the Kabila Coalition,is a parliamentary group within the parliament of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that is predominantly made up of the People's Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD). In April 2021 the coalition was able to take control of the government after a four-month-long power struggle. As of June 2023,the coalition is made up of 391 members coming from 24 different political parties.

She was nominated for the position by President Félix Tshisekedi on 1 April 2024,the first woman in the post,and took office following the investiture of her government by the National Assembly.
