Yusuf Saad Kamel, born Gregory Konchellah is a male former middle-distance runner who competed in the 800 metres and 1500 metres. Born in Narok, Kenya – the son of former two-time 800 metres World Champion Billy Konchellah – he represented Bahrain internationally. Kamel won the gold in the 1500 m and bronze in 800 m at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics held in Berlin.

Wilson Arap Chuma Kiprugut was a Kenyan sprinter and middle-distance runner. He competed at the 1964 Tokyo and 1968 Mexico Olympics and won two medals in the 800 metres event; in 1964 he also ran 400 metres, but failed to reach the final. He was the first person from Kenya ever to win an Olympic medal.
Jimmy Adar is a Ugandan middle-distance runner. He has represented his country at the Commonwealth Games twice, running in the heats at the 2006 Commonwealth Games before going on to finish fifth in the final of the 800 metres at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. He has also competed at the African Games in 2007 and 2015, the African Championships in Athletics in 2008 and 2010, and was a bronze medallist at the 2005 African Junior Athletics Championships.
Abubaker Kaki Khamis is a Sudanese runner who specializes in the 800 metres. He is a two-time World Indoor Champion over the distance and also won gold at the 2007 All-Africa Games. He represented Sudan at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. He is a member of the Messiria ethnic minority.

The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by 0.04 seconds by William Tanui of Kenya, the second straight Games in which a Kenyan man won the 800 metres. Johnny Gray returned the United States to podium after a 16-year absence.

At the 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, Tirop became the second-youngest ever gold medallist in the women's race, after Zola Budd. At the time of her death in 2021, she was the world-record holder in the 10 kilometres women's-only event.
George Kiprotich "Kip" Rono is a Kenyan former steeplechase runner. He won a gold medal in the event at the 1979 African Championships in Athletics and was the first African steeplechase winner at the 1979 IAAF World Cup.

Amaia Andrés Berakoetxea is a retired Spanish middle-distance runner who competed primarily in the 800 metres. She represented her country at the 1992 Summer Olympics, and twice at both the IAAF World Indoor Championships and European Athletics Indoor Championships. She won two bronze medals at the Mediterranean Games, in the 4 × 400 metres relay in the 1991 and the 800 m in 1993.

Stephen Ole Marai is a Kenyan male former middle-distance runner. He was a finalist in the 800 metres at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics and finished sixth despite Tom McKean catching his foot on the last lap. His personal best time of 1.44.42 minutes was achieved in 1990 and ranked him sixth in the world that year. He also competed at the 1987 All-Africa Games in his native Kenya, where he was a silver medallist behind his compatriot and world champion Billy Konchellah.
Emmanuel Kipkurui Korir is a Kenyan middle-distance runner. He is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and 2022 World champion in the 800 metres. Korir won the silver medal in the event at the 2018 African Championships in Athletics.
Mariana Chirilă is a Romanian female distance runner who competed in events ranging from 800 metres to the marathon. Individually she won gold medals in the 3000 metres at the 1986 Goodwill Games and the 1992 Balkan Athletics Championships, and won the senior race at the Balkan Cross Country Championships in 1985. She represented her country at the European Athletics Championships in 1986, twice at the Universiade, and twice at the IAAF World Women's Road Race Championships. Her highest global ranking was eighth in the 3000 m for the 1986 season.
