Santa Isabel Biological Reserve (Portuguese : Reserva Biológica de Santa Isabel) is a biological reserve on the coast of the municipalities of Pacatuba and Pirambu in Sergipe, Brazil.
Portuguese is a Western Romance language originating in the Iberian Peninsula. It is the sole official language of Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Angola, and São Tomé and Príncipe. It also has co-official language status in East Timor, Equatorial Guinea and Macau in China. As the result of expansion during colonial times, a cultural presence of Portuguese and Portuguese creole speakers are also found in Goa, Daman and Diu in India; in Batticaloa on the east coast of Sri Lanka; in the Indonesian island of Flores; in the Malacca state of Malaysia; and the ABC islands in the Caribbean where Papiamento is spoken, while Cape Verdean Creole is the most widely spoken Portuguese-based Creole. A Portuguese-speaking person or nation may be referred to as "Lusophone" in both English and Portuguese.
A biological reserve in Brazil is a legally defined type of protected area of Brazil, a conservation unit that aims for full preservation of biota and other natural attributes without human interference. It may be visited only with prior approval of the responsible agency, and only for research or educational purposes.
Pacatuba is a municipality located in the Brazilian state of Sergipe. Its population was 11,559 (2005) and its area is 364 km².
The coastal marine reserve, with an area of 5,547 hectares (13,710 acres), was created on 20 October 1988. It is administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation. [1] It lies in the municipalities of Pacatuba and Pirambu in Sergipe state. [2] The reserve is mainly a sandbank, with remnants of Atlantic Forest in its interior. There are some grasses, coconut trees, shrubs, lagoons and mangroves. Migratory birds include the common tern (Sterna hirundo). Tropical mockingbird (mimus gilvus) and pectoral antwren (herpsilochmus pectoralis) are endemic. [2]
The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation is the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment's administrative arm. Its acronym is "ICMBio". It is named after the environmental activist Chico Mendes.
Pirambu is a municipality located in the Brazilian state of Sergipe. Its population was 8,769 (2005) and its area is 218 km².
The common tern is a seabird in the family Laridae. This bird has a circumpolar distribution, its four subspecies breeding in temperate and subarctic regions of Europe, Asia and North America. It is strongly migratory, wintering in coastal tropical and subtropical regions. Breeding adults have light grey upperparts, white to very light grey underparts, a black cap, orange-red legs, and a narrow pointed bill. Depending on the subspecies, the bill may be mostly red with a black tip or all black. There are a number of similar species, including the partly sympatric Arctic tern, which can be separated on plumage details, leg and bill colour, or vocalisations.
The Biological Reserve is a "strict nature reserve" under IUCN protected area category Ia. The purpose is to protect the biota without direct human interference other than actions needed to restore and preserve the natural balance, biological diversity and natural ecological processes. [2] The critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle (eretmochelys imbricata) is protected in the reserve. [1]
IUCN protected area categories, or IUCN protected area management categories, are categories used to classify protected areas in a system developed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
