Sarah Adam (born December 17, 1990) [1] is an American wheelchair rugby player and occupational therapy professor from Naperville, Illinois. [2] [3]
Adam was a part of the United States national wheelchair rugby team lineups that won gold at the 2022 Americas Championship, silver at the 2022 World Championship, and gold at the 2023 Parapan American Games, making her the first American woman to win gold in the latter event. [4]
On April 30, 2024, Adam was officially named to the U.S. Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby Team roster for the 2024 Summer Paralympics, making her the first-ever woman to represent the United States in wheelchair rugby at a Paralympic Games. [5] [6] At the games, she became the first American woman to score in Paralympic wheelchair rugby, [7] [8] and the U.S. Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby Team, including her, won the silver medal. [9] As of those Paralympics, Adam is a 2.5-classified player in the wheelchair rugby classification system. [10]
Adam earned her bachelor's degree at Augustana College in Illinois and her doctorate in Occupational Therapy at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. [11]
She is now an associate professor of occupational science and occupational therapy at Saint Louis University. [12] [13] Her research interests include, per her Saint Louis University faculty profile, "enhancing independence and participation of individuals with disability through community-based exercise and adaptive sports", and she is a member of the American Occupational Therapy Association. [11]
Wheelchair rugby is a team sport for athletes with a disability. It is practiced in over twenty-five countries around the world and is a summer Paralympic sport.
The United States sent a delegation to compete at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. A total of 213 U.S. competitors took part in 18 sports; the only 2 sports Americans did not compete in were soccer 5-a-side and 7-a-side. The American delegation included 16 former members of the U.S. military, including 3 veterans of the Iraq War. Among them were shot putter Scott Winkler, who was paralyzed in an accident in Iraq, and swimmer Melissa Stockwell, a former United States Army officer who lost her left leg to a roadside bomb in the war.

Australia competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics Games in London, United Kingdom, from 29 August to 9 September 2012. The London Games were the biggest Games with 164 nations participating, 19 more than in the 2008 Beijing Paralympic. Australia has participated at every Summer Paralympic Games and hosted the 2000 Sydney Games. As such, the 2000 Sydney Games, regarded as one of the more successful Games, became a point-of-reference and an inspiration in the development of the 2012 London Games.

Rose Marie Hollermann is an American 3.5 point wheelchair basketball player and member of the United States women's national wheelchair basketball team. She who won gold at the 2011, and 2019 Women's U25 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship, the 2011, 2015 and 2023 Parapan American Games, and the 2016 Summer Paralympics. She also won bronze at the 2020 Summer Paralympics and the 2022 Wheelchair Basketball World Championships.
Charles "Chuck" Aoki is an American wheelchair rugby player who plays for the United States national wheelchair rugby team. He has represented the United States at the Paralympics in 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024. He is regarded as one of the top 3.0 classified players in the world. He now lives in Ypsilanti Township, Michigan, with his wife, Elizabeth, and their two dogs. Liz is a social worker and therapist who is also disabled; they met at a wheelchair rugby tournament in 2017 and later married in 2022. In addition to his work as an athlete, he sits on several committees within the USOPC and works at the University of Michigan’s Adaptive Sports & Fitness department.
