Saratoga Springs (formerly, Bachelor Springs and Pierson Springs [2] ) is a set of springs that was turned into a resort in the 1870s in Lake County, California. At its peak the resort could accommodate 250 people. The resort was closed after the main hotel burned down, but reopened as a retreat in 1991.
Saratoga Springs is located 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Upper Lake. [2] It is at an elevation of 1427 feet (435 m). [1] The town of Saratoga Springs was originally located 3.5 miles (5.6 km) north of its present location. [2]
The springs are on the side of a wide, brushy drainage ravine. They are about 2 miles (3.2 km) as the crow flies from the Witter Medical Springs. [3] They are 22 miles (35 km) east of Ukiah and 6 miles (9.7 km) west of Upper Lake. [4] The springs are in the Scotts Creek watershed. [5]
The resort had 12 small mineral springs, of which 11 were on the slopes 100 to 150 yards (91 to 137 m) east of the hotel. Six of these rose in cemented basins in the Roundhouse, a circular building 15 feet (4.6 m) in diameter. Their combined flow is perhaps 1.5 US gallons (5.7 L; 1.2 imp gal) per minute. They are all carbonated and deposit small amounts of calcium and iron, and have names like Appetizer and Digester. There were four other springs rising in cemented basins near the Roundhouse. Their water was collected in a tank and used for bathing. About 75 yards (69 m) north of the Roundhouse a sulfur spring issued from the base of a bank of dark, crushed shale. It gave about 1 US gallon (3.8 L; 0.83 imp gal) per minute of strongly sulfureted water. [3] The twelfth spring seeped from massive sandstone 2⁄5 mile (0.64 km) up the ravine from the hotel. [6]
A 1914 report said the main springs and their temperatures are: Magnesia 1, 59 °F (15 °C); Magnesia 2, 61.5 °F (16.4 °C); Arsenic, 60 °F (16 °C); Sulphur, 60 °F (16 °C); Soda, 61.5 °F (16.4 °C); Iron, 61.5 °F (16.4 °C) and Seltzer, 59 °F (15 °C). [7] The water was not bottled for sale. [4]
Before the resort was founded the springs were frequented by the Pomo, who used the valley for healing and peacemaking. [8]
The first owner of what became the resort was J.W. Pearson, who found the springs in a wooded valley of the foothills in 1871. He filed a preemption claim for 160 acres (65 ha) in 1874, and built a hotel and several cottages around the mineral springs. In 1878 Pearson sold the property, then known as Pierson Springs, to J.J. Kerbert. The U.S. government finally issued a patent for the land in 1879. Soon after John Marhten acquired the property, which he ran until he died in 1913. Marhten made many improvements including a new hotel, annexes and more cottages. By 1891 the resort could accommodate 350 people, with a barn for 40 horses. [9]
At its peak the resort covered 260 acres (110 ha) and had a stagecoach stop, post office, restaurant and dance hall. [8] It offered multiple cold mineral springs for bathing and a bottling plant for drinking. [2] Guests from the San Francisco Bay Area would reach the resort by taking a train to Cloverdale, then a stagecoach via Ukiah. [9] In 1910 there were accommodations for 250 people in the hotel, annex and 16 cottages set in an oak grove in a small flat area beside the creek. [3]
The post office at the springs was called Bachelor. The Bachelor post office opened in 1882, moved to the new site in 1883, closed in 1919, reopened in 1920, and closed for good in 1940. [2]
The owner in 1915 was John Martens Estate. [4] In 1920 E.R. Keil and his wife bought the resort. [9] A 1922 guide to California resorts said Saratoga Springs could be reached by Northwestern Pacific Railroad to Ukiah, and from there 22 miles (35 km) by stagecoach. The large, level grounds were all shaded by oak and walnut trees. Cold and carbonated mineral waters had laxative, appetizer or digestive properties. There was a 30 by 50 feet (9.1 by 15.2 m) concrete plunge with carbonated and very invigorating water. The resort had electric lights throughout, telephone, post office and store. Hotels rates were $19 to $22 per week, while housekeeping cabins were $10 to $15 per week. [10]
In 1948–1949 the Kiel's heirs sold it to Matt and Leda Callan. Guests in the 1950s would often stay several weeks, enjoying the good cooking, swimming pool, croquet, tennis, horseback riding, dancing and other activities. When the main hotel burned down, the Callans sold the resort. [9] In 1991 David Caroll bought the property and restored it as a retreat. [8]
Harbin Hot Springs is a non-profit hot spring retreat and workshop center at Harbin Springs in Lake County, Northern California. Named after Matthew Harbin, a pioneer who settled in the Lake County area. It is located about two hours northeast of the San Francisco Bay Area, in the United States. The facility was partially destroyed in the Valley Fire in September 2015, and was temporarily closed. In January 2019 it partially reopened, including the main pools and sauna, and a limited cafeteria service.
Vichy Springs, more fully Napa Vichy Springs is a set of springs in Napa County, California whose water was once bottled and sold in 1898 as Napa Vichy Water. Vichy Springs is situated south of the Silverado Country Club and Milliken Creek on Montecello Road a few miles northeast of Napa.
Richardson Springs is an unincorporated community in Butte County, California. It is located on Mud Creek 8.5 miles (13.7 km) north-northeast of Chico, at an elevation of 620 feet. The place is named for J.H. and Lee Richardson, who founded mineral spas here in 1898. A post office was opened in 1933.
Wilbur Hot Springs is a naturally occurring historic hot spring, health sanctuary, personal retreat and 1,800-acre (7.3 km2) nature reserve 20+ miles west of Williams, Colusa County, in northern California. It is about 2 hours northeast of the San Francisco Bay Area and 1½ hours north of the Sacramento Airport.

Bartlett Springs is a set of springs around which a resort was developed in Lake County, California. There were four improved springs, each delivering cool carbonated water with considerable amounts of suspended iron. In 1914 it was the largest such resort in Lake County, capable of accommodating up to 500 guests. There was also a bottling plant designed to maintain the natural carbonation as the bottles were filled and capped. It could fill 10,000 per day during the season from May to October when the roads were passable.

Highland Springs is a set of springs which was turned into a resort in the 19th century in Lake County, California. The resort grew to be able to accommodate 200 people, attracted by the curative powers of the mineral waters and the lovely mountain scenery. In the 1920s its popularity waned, the hotel was partly burned, and it passed through various hands before the county claimed eminent domain, bought the property, and flooded it with the Highland Springs Reservoir. The reservoir is surrounded by the Highland Springs Recreation Area, managed by the county.

Howard Springs is a set of springs turned into a resort in the 1870s in Lake County, California. The resort catered primarily to people interested in the curative powers of the mineral waters. Guests were accommodated in cabins or tents. At one time it had an official post office. The resort changed hands many times over the years, with various changes to the lodge, accommodations and bathhouses, until closing in 1970. For a period it was leased for geothermal exploration. Today it has reopened as a health resort.
Seigler Springs is a set of springs in Lake County, California around which a resort developed in the 19th century. In the 1930s the resort was expanded, and in 1947 an airport opened nearby. The resort declined in the 1960s. Part of it was separated out and became a residential subdivision, while part became a religious retreat. The 2015 Valley Fire caused great damage.

Kelsey Creek is a watercourse in Lake County, California, United States, that feeds Clear Lake from the south. The watershed was forest-covered. In the lower parts it has been converted to farmland and for urban use. Higher up the forests have been cleared, regrown and cleared again. The northern part of the creek flows through a geothermal field that feeds power plants and hot springs. The wooded Cobb area in the higher part of the watershed holds resorts and resort communities, some dating to the 1850s.
Allen Springs is a group of mineral water springs in Lake County, California. From 1874 the springs were surrounded by a resort with a hotel, cottages, saloon, store and so on. The resort was turned into a private club in 1912 and was abandoned by 1940. By 2021 the site had returned to nature.
Cow Mountain is a ridge in the Mayacamas Mountains in Lake County, California, and Mendocino County, California. It is home to two large recreation areas. One is closed to off-road vehicles and the other is not. Erosion from the mountain, caused in part by human land use, contributes sediment and nutrients to Clear Lake.
Scotts Creek is a stream in Lake County, California, the largest tributary of Clear Lake. It rises to the south of Cow Mountain in the Mayacamas Mountains, then flows southeast towards Clear Lake, running through the fertile Scotts Valley and the seasonal Tule Lake before joining Middle Creek and flowing into the lake via Rodman Slough.
The Blue Lakes are a string of two or three lakes in Lake County, California, set in a deep canyon. At one time they seem to have been in the Russian River watershed, but a recent geological upheaval cut them off from that basin and they now drain via Scotts Creek into Clear Lake in the Sacramento River basin. In the 19th and early 20th centuries there were several resorts around the lakes. Their waters have been highly altered by human activity and most of their native fish are lost, but they have a healthy population of largemouth bass.
