Sarkhej was one of the 182 assembly seats of Gujarat's Vidhan Sabha (Gujarat Legislative Assembly), from 1975 [2] until 2012. It was a largely urban seat representing there 1⁄15 of Ahmedabad. Its abolition, along with others and new replacement seats were drawn up in 2008, in readiness for the next election which proved to be in 2012.

Ahmedabad Lok Sabha constituency was in Gujarat state in western India till 2008. After the reorg of 2009, Ahmedabad East Lok Sabha constituency and Ahmedabad West Lok Sabha constituency became the two constituencies from the city, sending a representative to the parliament.
