The journal was established in 1969 as the Acta Socio-Medica Scandinavica. [1] It was renamed the Scandinavian Journal of Social Medicine in 1973, [1] obtaining its current name in 1999. [2]

The journal is abstracted and indexed in Scopus, the Science Citation Index Expanded, and the Social Sciences Citation Index. According to the Journal Citation Reports , the journal has a 2022 impact factor of 3.4. [3]
