Sean Schemmel (born November 21, 1968) [1] [2] is an American voice actor, ADR director, and screenwriter known chiefly for his work in cartoons, anime, and video games. His most notable role is the teen and adult voice of Son Goku in the Funimation dub of the Dragon Ball franchise.
Initially, Schemmel never planned on becoming a voice actor; he trained to be a classical French horn player. When a friend persuaded him to audition for Dragon Ball Z , he tried out for a minor character who was going to be killed in the first season of the show. He had been recording for two weeks before he was told that he was going to be the lead. [3] Since being cast as Son Goku by Funimation in 1999, he has been the most consistent English voice actor for the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball franchise, having voiced the character's older teen and adult incarnations in every anime series produced to date ( Dragon Ball , Z , GT , Kai and Super ) and most Dragon Ball animated movies and video games, as well as other characters such as King Kai and Goku Black. [4]
Besides voicing Goku, Schemmel has lent his voice to several other anime characters including Amidamaru in Shaman King (2001), Lucario in Pokémon and Elliot Grant in Mew Mew Power . His other roles in animation include Firefly in G.I. Joe: Sigma 6 , Gonard in Kappa Mikey and Hawkman in DC Super Friends . In video games, Schemmel has provided his voice to Makuta in Bionicle , Black Doom in Shadow the Hedgehog , Maxwell in Bullet Witch , Horace in Skullgirls , Batman in The Dark Knight Rises, Sun Wukong (whom Goku was originally based on) in Smite , and Marc Wilson in Fallout 4 .
In addition to his voice acting career, Schemmel was also an ADR Director and scriptwriter for NYAV Post, where he had directed and adapted for English dubs of several Japanese anime series. In the field of narration, he has won two awards for his audiobook recordings.
In 1993, Schemmel married Melissa Cox. The couple separated in 1998. He married actress Melodee Lenz the same year. They divorced after three years of being together in 2001. [3]

Dragon Ball GT is a Japanese anime television series based on Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga that ran from February 1996 to November 1997. Produced by Toei Animation, the series premiered in Japan on Fuji TV and ran for 64 episodes. Unlike Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, the previous two television adaptations in the Dragon Ball media franchise, Dragon Ball GT does not adapt the manga by Toriyama. Dragon Ball GT is an anime-exclusive sequel to Dragon Ball Z with an original storyline using the same characters and universe, which follows the exploits of Son Goku, the series protagonist who is turned into a child; his granddaughter, Pan; and their associates on a quest to collect Black Star Dragon Balls, a set of Dragon Balls which are hidden throughout the universe.
Tien Shinhan, known as Tenshinhan in the Japanese media and Viz Media's release of the manga, is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise created by Akira Toriyama. He made his appearance in chapter #113 "The 22nd Tenkaichi Budōkai", first published in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine on February 24, 1987, entering the World Martial Arts Tournament to defeat Son Goku and his fellow-students. However, he later teams up with them to defeat King Piccolo, accompanied by his best friend Chiaotzu. Tien becomes Goku's rival for a period and is notable for being the first person in the series to fly using Bukū-jutsu and to use the Taiyōken technique.
Dragon Ball is a Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation that ran for 153 episodes from February 26, 1986, to April 19, 1989, on Fuji TV. It was broadcast in 81 countries worldwide and is the first television series adaptation in the Dragon Ball franchise. The series follows the adventures of Goku, a young boy with a monkey tail and exceptional strength who battles evil-doers in hand-to-hand combat.
Son Goku is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball manga series created by Akira Toriyama. He is based on Sun Wukong, a main character of the classic 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, combined with influences from the Hong Kong action cinema of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. Goku made his debut in the first Dragon Ball chapter, Bulma and Son Goku, originally published in Japan's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine on December 3, 1984. Goku is introduced as an eccentric, monkey-tailed boy who practices martial arts and possesses superhuman strength. He meets Bulma and joins her on a journey to find the seven wish-granting Dragon Balls. Along the way, he finds new friends who follow him on his journey to become stronger. As Goku grows up, he becomes the Earth's mightiest warrior and battles a wide variety of villains with the help of his friends and family, while also gaining new allies in the process.

Dragon Ball is a Japanese media franchise created by Akira Toriyama in 1984. Dragon Ball was originally inspired by the classical 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, combined with elements of Hong Kong martial arts films. Dragon Ball characters also use a variety of East Asian martial arts styles, including karate and Wing Chun. The series follows the adventures of protagonist Son Goku from his childhood through adulthood as he trains in martial arts. He spends his childhood far from civilization until he meets a teen girl named Bulma, who encourages him to join her quest in exploring the world in search of the seven orbs known as the Dragon Balls, which summon a wish-granting dragon when gathered. Perhaps worse is realizing that one voice actor has multiple roles. As Hope Chapman noted, Steven Blum voices a police officer talking with Onizuka. Sean Schemmel voices every third character in Berserk. When you hear the same voices over and over in the same show, it makes it immediately obvious that you're being entertained instead of being part of a story.
