The Sepu Kangri (Tibetan :བསངས་ཕུ་གངས་རི, Wylie : bsangs phu gangs ri, THL : sang pu gang ri; also Sapu Mountain from Chinese) is a mountain in Biru County, Nagqu prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region. The mountain is 285 kilometres (177 mi) east-northeast of Lhasa and 178 kilometres (111 mi) east-southeast of Nagqu Town. With a height of 6,956 metres (22,822 ft), it forms the highest point in the eastern part of the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains. The full name of the mountain is Sepu Kunglha Karpo, meaning "white snow god". [2]
The mountain is sacred in Tibetan Bon tradition. The mountain is referred to as (Tibetan : ལྷོ་ཡི་འཛམ་བུ་ཀླུ་རི, Wylie : lho yi 'dzam bu klu ri) in that context. [3] There is a Bon monastery that is more than half millennium old in the valley below. [3] [4]
Chris Bonington and Charles Clarke explored the mountain in 1996. In the following two years they tried unsuccessfully to climb Sepu Kangri. [4] [5] [6] [7]
Finally, on October 2, 2002 Carlos Buhler and Mark Newcomb succeeded in first ascent. [6] [7] [8]
Bon or Bön, also known as Yungdrung Bon, is the indigenous Tibetan religion which shares many similarities and influences with Tibetan Buddhism. It initially developed in the tenth and eleventh centuries but retains elements from earlier Tibetan religious traditions. Bon is a significant minority religion in Tibet, especially in the east, as well as in the surrounding Himalayan regions.

Menri Monastery is the name of a Bon monastery in Tibet that has been refounded in India. The name derives from the medicinal plants and medicinal springs on the mountain. Menri became the leading Bon monastery in the Tibetan cultural region. The abbot of Menri is recognized as the spiritual leader of Bon.

Kawa Garbo or Khawa Karpo, as it is known by local residents and pilgrims, or Kawagebo Peak, is the highest mountain in the Chinese province of Yunnan. It is located on the border between Dêqên County, Yunnan, and the counties of Zogang and Zayü of the Tibet Autonomous Region. It rises about 20 kilometres (12 mi) west of Shengping (升平镇), the seat of Dêqên County, which lies on China National Highway 214. What is now Dêqên County has been part of Yunnan since the 1720s, when the current border with Tibet was established by the early Qing Dynasty. Kawagarbo is one of the most sacred peaks in the Tibetan world and is often referred to as Nyainqênkawagarbo to show its sacredness and avoid ambiguousness with the other Kawagarbo in the Anung-Derung-speaking Gongshan County.
Purang or Burang, known as Puhreng in Tibetan, (Nepali:ताक्लाकोट) is a town which serves as the administrative center of Purang County, Ngari Prefecture of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), China. The town lies at an altitude of 3,900m in the valley of the Karnali River. The town spans an area of 3,257.81 square kilometres (1,257.85 sq mi), and has a permanent population 6,047 as of 2010, and a hukou population of 4,477 as of 2018. To the south are Gurla Mandhata and the Abi Gamin ranges. Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash are to the north. This region is the mythological and actual river nexus of the Himalaya with sources of the Indus, Ganges and Yarlung Tsangpo/Brahmaputra all within 110 kilometres (70 mi) of Purang.

Nangzhik Monastery, formerly known by several other names, is a monastery of the Bon religion in Amdo, modern Ngawa Town, Sichuan, China. It is about a 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) walk up a shortcut to reach the monastery on a hill to the north of the town. On a hill to the east is another Bon monastery named Togden or Topgyel which has a large stupa nearby.
Shardza Tashi Gyaltsen was a great Dzogchen master of the Bon tradition of Tibet who took not only Bon disciples, but gathered students from all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
Dzongsar Monastery is a Buddhist monastery in Dêgê County in the Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan, China, southeast of the town of Derge and east of Palpung Monastery. Historically it lay in the Kham region of Tibet. It was founded in 746, destroyed in 1958, and rebuilt in 1983.
Meili Snow Mountains, Mainri or Minling Snow Mountains is a mountain range in the Chinese province of Yunnan. It lies close to the northwestern boundary of the province and is bounded by the Nujiang river on the west and the Lancang River on the east. Kangri Karpo, also spelt Gangri Garbo, is a mountain range in eastern Tibet, located primarily in Nyingchi Prefecture as well as a portion of Qamdo Prefecture in the Tibet Autonomous Region, China. The mountain range lies to the east of the Himalayas and to the west of the Hengduan Mountains. The mountains are geographically a southern extension of the eastern Transhimalayas.
Dakpa Sheri (Tibetan: དག་པ་ཤེལ་རི, Wylie: dag pa shel ri, THL: dak pa shel ri, Chinese: 达瓜西热; pinyin: Dá guā xī rè), explained as "Pure Crystal Mountain" and also known as Tsari, is a mountain in the eponymously named Tsari region in Lhöntse County of Tibet's Shannan Prefecture. The mountain is considered sacred for Tibetans and the pilgrimage route circumambulates the mountain. Takpa Siri ridge consists of four hills/ passes and four water bodies.
In the next couple of days we learned that this was a holy mountain, that its full Tibetan name was Sepu Kunglha Karpo, which means the White Snow God.

These peaks are sacred; the Samda monastery, an 800-year-old Bonpo fortress shrine presently housing 40 monks, is a day's journey below them.
