Shaheed Bir Bikrom Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College is a school and college in Dhaka, Bangladesh, [1] adjacent to Sursoptok underpass. [2] It is managed by the Bangladesh Army and primarily for the children of Army personnel. Pupils from the civilian section also can study in this college.

History

On 29 July 2018 two students from the college died in a road accident on Airport Road, Dhaka. [3] The incident impelled students to demand safer roads and stricter traffic laws, and the demonstrations rapidly spread throughout Bangladesh. [4] [5]

The 2018 Bangladesh Quota Reform Movement was a students' movement demanding reforms in policies regarding recruitment in the Bangladesh government services. Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakshan Parishad initiated movement initially began in Shahbag and on Dhaka University campus on 17 February 2018, and eventually spread country-wide by 8 April 2018. A series of public protests in Bangladesh advocating improved road safety were held from 29 July to 8 August 2018. They were sparked by the deaths of two high-school students in Dhaka struck by a bus operated by an unlicensed driver who was racing to collect passengers. The incident impelled students to demand safer roads and stricter traffic laws, and the demonstrations rapidly spread throughout Bangladesh.

AKM Samsul Haque Khan was Bengali-Pakistani civil servant who was killed in the Bangladesh Liberation war and is considered a martyr in Bangladesh. He was awarded the Independence Day Award, the highest civilian award in Bangladesh, in 2010.

Sursoptok Underpass is a pedestrian underpass located in Bangladesh. It is one of the four underpasses in Dhaka. The underpass with 15 meter high, 135 meters long, 5 meters, four 42 meter long tunnels is currently the largest underpass in Bangladesh. Prior to its construction, Gulistan underpass was the largest underpass in the country.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">A. K. M. Miraj Uddin</span> Bangladeshi athlete and freedom fighter

A. K. M. Miraj Uddin was a Bangladeshi athlete, politician and a freedom fighter. As an athlete, he achieved success in hurdling, pole vault and long jump in primary and secondary school. He also competed in Pakistani national sporting events from 1963 to 1970, setting multiple records. He is considered one of the best athletes of Bangladesh's pre-independence era. He fought in various battlefields of Manikganj as an active freedom fighter in Bangladesh Liberation War. He was captured by the Pakistani army during the war and later went missing. The Shaheed Miraj–Tapan Stadium in Manikganj was named in honour of him and another martyred freedom fighter Tapan Chowdhury.
