Shakespopi (stylized in all caps) is the second studio album by Nigerian singer Shallipopi. It was released through Plutomania Records and Dvpper Music on April 11, 2024. [1] It serves as the follow-up to his previous album, Presido La Pluto (2023).

Background and release

Five months after the release of his debut studio album Presido La Pluto, [2] Shallipopi announced that his next project would be his forthcoming studio album called Shakespopi. [3] On April 10 2024, Shallipopi posted a video promoting the album in an Instagram post. [4] [5] The album was finally released on April 11, 2024. [6] [7]

Shakespopi received mixed reviews from Pulse Nigeria. According to Adeayo Adebiyo, "Shakespopi features some of his weakest hooks and a slew of songs that are so unsatisfyingly short; his rhymes are comically juvenile and usage of street languages." [8] In a review for The NATIVE, Wale Oloworekende said "Shakespopi is a furtherance heat check with an audience doubling as a baying crowd with their eyes trained on the rim, his lyrics promotes Benin culture and street languages." [11]

Commercial performance

Shakespopi debuted at number one on the Nigeria Apple Music chart in its first week. It became his highest-charting album at the time. [12] The album also outsold other notable releases that week like Portable's Tony Montana, which featured rapper Skepta. [13] The first song on the album titled "ASAP", debuted at number one on Nigeria Apple Music Top 100. [14]

Crown Uzama, known professionally as Shallipopi, is a Nigerian singer, rapper, and songwriter. He signed with Dvpper Music in 2023, and rose to fame with his single "Elon Musk". It moderately entered the TurnTable chart, while his debut studio album Presido La Pluto (2023) peaked at number one on the TurnTable Top 50 and debuted atop Apple Music top 100 albums. His second studio album, Shakespopi (2024), was met with continued success as it became Shallipopi's second chart-topping album. Its lead single "ASAP" reached number one on the TurnTable Top 100.

Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma, known professionally as Qing Madi, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. She gained initial recognition following the release of her hit single "See Finish" in 2022. Plutomania Records, abbreviated as PTMR, is a Nigerian record label founded by Afrofunk singer Shallipopi in 2023 as a joint venture. The label was created for both parties to mutually manage the career and recording catalogue of rising artists. As of 2024, the label has signed artists like Zerry DL and Tegaboi dc. PTMR also has a special profit-sharing business deal with Dapper Music.
