The Shakey's Super League (SSL) is a women's volleyball league in the Philippines contested within the collegiate and high school levels. [1] The league is organized by Shakey's Pizza Asia Ventures Inc. (SPAVI) and the Athletic Events and Sports Management Group Inc. (ACES). [2] [3]

History

Background

Shakey's Pizza's history with volleyball in the Philippines dates back to 2004 with the Shakey's V-League (SVL). Originally serving a collegiate league, it would later branch into corporate teams similar to the Philippine Basketball Association in 2011. In 2016, the SVL was rebranded to the now-professional Premier Volleyball League (PVL), parting ways with Shakey's. Six years later in 2022, the collegiate division of the PVL was launched separately as the V-League.

In 2013, the Philippine Super Liga (PSL), another voleyball league featuring corporate teams, was launched. The league, which would later be owned by Athletic Events and Sports Management Group Inc. (ACES), rivaled the PVL, but ended up ceasing in 2021 after all of its teams left for the rival league.

Launch

With both the SVL and PSL ceasing to exist, ACES partnered with Shakey's (via Shakey's Pizza Asia Ventures Inc.; SPAVI) to form the Shakey's Super League on August 16, 2022. It was formally launched at Shakey's ASEANA outlet in Parañaque as a collegiate colleyball league similar to the SVL. [4]

The SSL's inaugural tournament, the 2022 Collegiate Pre-Season Tournament, from September 22 to November 28, 2022. [4] The first tournament marks the return of full preseasons for the UAAP and NCAA teams since they were forced to resort to tune-ups due to disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. [5]

In May 2023, SSL launched the high school-level Girls Volleyball Invitational League (GVIL) with its inaugural edition. It is contested by teams from various associations across the country. [6]

League format and teams

The Shakey's Super League consists of three tournaments that are held annually, including two collegiate level and one high school level. The tournaments shown are listed in the order they are held in each calendar year.

Girls Volleyball Invitational League

The Shakey's Girls Volleyball Invitational League (GVIL), is the SSL's high school competition. The GVIL is the first tournament held in each calendar year and runs from May to June. [7]

National Invitationals

The National Invitationals is the SSL's national collegiate tournament. The National Invitationals is the second tournament held in each calendar year and usually runs from July to August. Teams qualify for the tournament by either finishing in a qualifying position in their association or regional qualifier.

Pre-season Championship

The Pre-season Championship, also known as the Collegiate Pre-season Championship, is billed by the SSL as its premier tournament. The Pre-season Championship is the final tournament held in each calendar year and runs from September to November. It is contested by teams from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (NCAA) and the NCAA, similar to the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup in men's basketball. [8] [9]

As of 2024, Solar Sports has the television broadcast rights to the Shakey's Super League. All SSL games are also streamed live by Smart Communications via Smart LiveStream and online via the social media channels of PusoPilipinas and the Shakey's Super League.

She is a former team captain of the FEU Lady Tamaraws in her collegiate years, where she was given the title "Queen Tamaraw". She played in the Philippine Super Liga (PSL) with the Cignal HD Spikers and is the PSL's brand ambassador for 2018 to 2019. In 2021, Cignal transferred to the Premier Volleyball League.

It began as a women's collegiate league with teams coming from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation (CESAFI), among others. Since 2011, corporate clubs and other non-collegiate teams have also participated in the league.

Diana Mae "Tots" Carlos is a Filipino volleyball player who currently plays for the Creamline Cool Smashers. She was playing with UP Lady Fighting Maroons of the University of the Philippines-Diliman, and a member of both the indoor and beach volleyball collegiate varsity teams of the university. She bagged the back-to-back Most Valuable Player and Best Opposite Spiker in the 2022 Premier Volleyball League Open Conference and 2022 Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference. The 2022 Shakey's Super League Pre-season Championship was the inaugural edition of the collegiate pre-season competition organized by the Shakey's Super League. It is also the first tournament for the SSL in general and the only such in 2022. The tournament was held on September 24 to November 19, 2022, at Rizal Memorial Coliseum, Manila. It features 18 collegiate teams from the two most prominent collegiate athletics associations in the country — NCAA and UAAP.

Angelique Dionela is a Filipino volleyball athlete. Dionela played for the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta collegiate women's University team. She is currently playing for the Farm Fresh Foxies in the Premier Volleyball League.

The Adamson Lady Falcons are the women's collegiate varsity volleyball team of the Adamson University. The team competes in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

The 2023 Shakey's Super League National Invitationals was the inaugural edition of the national collegiate competition organized by the Shakey's Super League and the second SSL tournament of 2023.

Lorene Grace Montebon Toring is a Filipino volleyball player. She last played for the Adamson Soaring Lady Falcons in the UAAP.

Jerry Yee is a Filipino volleyball coach who is the head coach of the Zus Coffee Thunderbelles of the Premier Volleyball League, the UE Lady Red Warriors of the UAAP, and the Benilde Lady Blazers of the NCAA.

The 2024 Shakey's Super League National Invitationals was the second edition of the national collegiate competition organized by the Shakey's Super League and the second SSL tournament of 2024.The tournament began on July 10 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. This tournament showcased the top three teams of the recent volleyball tournaments of the NCAA and UAAP, alongside the top two teams from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao that qualified on the regional qualifiers.

The 2024 Shakey's Super League Pre-season Championship will be the third edition of the collegiate volleyball competition organized by the Shakey's Super League and the third and final SSL tournament of 2024. The tournament will begin on September 27, 2024, and will be contested by all 18 teams from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
