Shatarup Ghosh is an Indian politician from West Bengal belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM). He had formerly served as the All India Joint Secretary of the Students' Federation of India (SFI), [1] [2] [3] the students wing of CPIM and was member of its central secretariat. [7] [8] Then he became a member of the state committee secretariat of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), which is the youth wing of CPIM. [9] He has been inducted into the West Bengal State Committee of Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the 23rd Party conference of state in March 2022 and currently remains a member of it. [10]

Early life

Shatarup Ghosh was born in Kasba to Shib Nath Ghosh and Shila Ghosh. His family was predominantly a leftist family though his family had not any political background. [11] He was encouraged to join politics from a very young age. [12] After completing school education in South Point High School, [13] Shatarup Ghosh joined Asutosh College in 2005 to pursue BSc in Economics. [14] He completed his MA from Rabindra Bharati University. [14] He is inspired by Karl Marx, Sukanta Bhattacharya, who was uncle of then Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, novelist Manik Bandyopadhyay, and Russian writer Maxim Gorky. [13]

Political career

Student politics

Shatarup started politics when he was in Asutosh College. He joined the SFI unit of the college in 2005 and soon worked actively and became its unit secretary. [13] During his tenure as the secretary SFI won 19 out of 20 seats in the Asutosh College union election [7] and defeated their rival Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad, which was an "event that’s out of step with" then trends in West Bengal. [13] His main issue was about the incident of a student and SFI supporter named Souvik Hazra, losing one eye during a clash between supporters of SFI and TMCP. [7] The CPM's youth wing made it an issue and Ghosh extensively campaigned in the student's union polls that followed. He became the Kolkata district joint secretary in 2010–2011. [7] In 2012 he became the West Bengal state joint secretary of SFI in the 34th SFI state conference. [1] [3]

Youth activism and politics

In 2013, he protested against the Death of Sudipto Gupta. Sudipta Gupta was a SFI activist who was brutally beaten by Government Police to death [15] and his eye was popped out. [16] Shatarup Ghosh led and was in frontline of the protests. [1] [17] [18]

After joining the Democratic Youth Federation of India, he quickly rose to prominence and got inducted into the state secretariat of DYFI. [19] He protested against denomination, NRC-CAA, rising price of fuels [20] and unemployment. He participated in multiple strikes, bandhs and rallies. He has been one of the youth stars during election campaigns. [21] His leadership and public speaking skills helped him rise within CPIM as a youth leader. [11] In 2017, he was attacked in Kasba along with other party workers by TMC mobs. [22] In 2019 he was arrested along with 35 CPIM workers due to strike. [23] He also had an active role in 2021 Nabanna Abhijan.[ citation needed ]

He took part in the famous panel discussion at the India Today Conclave East 2018 against BJP's Sambit Patra and Mukul Roy, TMC's Chandan Mitra and INC's Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. [19] He is the most visible leader from the CPIM who is frequently seen in news debates or political discussions.[ citation needed ]

Electoral results

Shatarup Ghosh contested his first MLA election on a ticket from CPI(M) at the age of 25 from Kasba in 2011 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election. He was the youngest candidate from Left Front at that time. [12] He was fielded again in 2016 and 2021 as the CPI(M) candidate from the same constituency. [14] However he lost all of those elections. He was inducted in the politburo of CPI(M) in the 21st party congress organised at Visakhapatnam in 2015. He was a Member of the 16th Lok Sabha, representing Raiganj constituency. Earlier, he was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha, representing the Calcutta North East constituency of West Bengal. After delimitation, in the 2009 Lok Sabha election Salim contested the new Calcutta North constituency, and lost to Sudip Bandyopadhyay of the Trinamool Congress. Mohammed Salim is contesting the 2024 Indian general election as the Left Front candidate from the Murshidabad.

Red Volunteers is an Indian left-wing non-profit political, beneficiary and voluntary organization founded by the Democratic Youth Federation of India and the Students Federation of India.

2021 Nabanna Abhijan was a protest march to the West Bengal state secretariat Nabanna, organised by Students Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Left Front and other Left parties and student organisations on 11 February 2021 against the alleged failures of TMC-led Government of West Bengal, which eventually turned into a conflict between the police and protesters. The protest march saw a massive involvement of youths, students and activists from SFI, DYFI and 8 other Left parties along with Indian National Congress and it's unions. Unemployment was one of major issues of this protest.

The protest against the death of Anish Khan, also known as the justice for Anish Khan protest, began on 18 February 2022 after the death of All India Students' Federation (AISF) leader Anish Khan. The AISF, Students' Federation of India, All India Students Association and other organizations organised protests, including rallies, human chains and demonstrations. The protests began in Jadavpur and Park Circus, initiated by students at Aliah University, then rapidly spread across the state of West Bengal and throughout India.

Dinesh Majumdar was a Marxist visionary and youth communist leader. A legendary student leader of the 1950s to the 1970s and a pioneer of the youth movement from the mid-1960s. He was a three-term member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly between 1971 and 1980.
