Babylon 5 American space opera television series

Babylon 5 is an American space opera television series created by writer and producer J. Michael Straczynski, under the Babylonian Productions label, in association with Straczynski's Synthetic Worlds Ltd. and Warner Bros. Domestic Television. After the successful airing of a test pilot movie on February 22, 1993, Babylon 5: The Gathering, in May 1993 Warner Bros. commissioned the series for production as part of its Prime Time Entertainment Network (PTEN). The show premiered in the US on January 26, 1994, and ran for five seasons.

Synopsis

While testing a new model of Starfury, Captain Sheridan is told of a distress signal nearby. There, he finds Bester from Psi-Corps there, wanting to see Sheridan and his staff discretely about a confidential matter. Once aboard, Bester explains that he is aware of the Shadows infiltrating the upper levels of Earth's government and Psi-Corps and cannot trust those there. Instead, he needs the station's help to intercept a Shadow transport vessel filled with "weapons components" while it is in hyperspace, considering the proverb "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" in reaching out to Babylon 5. Sheridan reluctantly agrees, and they travel to intercept via the White Star. Bester's information is correct, and the White Star destroys the fighters protecting the transport before it is tethered. While a larger Shadow ship arrives, it turns back as it nears the White Star. Desiring not to face it, Sheridan orders them to return to Babylon 5.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend is an ancient proverb which suggests that two opposing parties can or should work together against a common enemy. The earliest known expression of this concept is found in a Sanskrit treatise on statecraft, the Arthashastra, which dates to around the 4th century BC, while the first recorded use of the current English version came in 1884.

Examining the cargo of the transit, they discover it contains hundreds of humans in stasis, and markings suggest they are all telepaths. Bester admits he knew these "weapon components" were telepaths, but has no idea what the Shadows wanted with them. Dr. Franklin opens one stasis chamber, which turns out to be a woman named Carolyn, whom Bester reveals was a high-level telepath that he had fallen in love with, beyond his arranged marriage, and still carries his child. Carolyn had fled the Psi-Corps earlier but her fate had been unknown. When she wakes up, she suffers a panic attack from dreams and suddenly creates havoc in medlab. By the time Garibaldi, Franklin, and Bester arrive, Carolyn has integrated herself within the wiring of medlab. Bester tries to approach her but she fires a bolt of electricity at his Psi-Corps badge and he narrowly gets away. She begs for help but insists she must protect the "machine". Franklin is able to get close enough to inject a sedative as to knock her unconscious. They deduce that the Shadows need telepaths to pilot their ships, hence why Bester heard them called as "weapon components". Franklin says it will take time to bring Carolyn back to health, and Bester offers the station any resources they may need to help her recover.

Separately, G'Kar pressures Sheridan and Ivanova about being let into their War Council, having giving them the help of Narns for station security. Sheridan discusses this with Delenn, knowing that G'Kar had warned Sheridan about the Shadows before Delenn revealed the full truth to him, and G'Kar may be greatly offended learning that they had effectively sacrificed the Narn homeworld to gain a surprise advantage on the Shadows. Delenn states she will discuss this with G'Kar, since it was her decision to keep the truth until the time was right. Delenn gravely reveals these details to G'Kar, who is in shock. He understands the reasons that Delenn and Sheridan had used to not take action earlier, but admits it will take time to be able to forgive them for it.

After Bester's departure, Garibaldi reads through the book of G'Quan and finds a key passage. He gathers the war council at their newly constructed war room and confirms with G'Kar what he read from the book: that a thousand years ago, the Shadows had attacked Narn but purposely attacked their telepaths first. Tied with the Shadow vessel avoiding the White Star due to Bester's presence, they deduce that telepaths can be used as a weapon to fight the Shadows. Just then, they hear news that the Shadows have now struck one of the outer rim species in open conflict.

Arc significance

Interstellar Network News (ISN) is a fictional TV news network in the Babylon 5 universe. ISN was modelled on real-world news outlets, such as CNN. In the Babylon 5 fictional universe, ISN is the sole Earth broadcaster, based in Geneva, and is featured in many episodes such that the changes in tone are readily discerned as the show progresses.

The Shadows are a fictional alien species in the science fiction television series Babylon 5. Their homeworld is Z'ha'dum, although whether it is the world they originated from is uncertain, and they were the second race among the First Ones to be discovered and nurtured by Lorien, the "First One". In contrast to the Vorlons, whose philosophy is represented by the question "Who are you?", that of the Shadows is represented by the question "What do you want?", centering towards desire rather than identity. J. Michael Straczynski, the show's creator, once explained that he chose the name "Shadows" because of its meaning in Analytical psychology.

In the fictional universe of Babylon 5, the Psi Corps is an agency of the Earth Alliance responsible for all humans with telepathic or other para-psychological abilities anywhere within Earth-controlled space. All persons with Psi abilities are required to either join the Corps, face lifetime imprisonment, or submit to a lifetime of drug treatments to suppress their abilities. Prolonged treatment with these drugs has a depressing effect. Susan Ivanova's mother committed suicide after ten years under treatment.
