Synopsis

To combat Earth's propaganda war against Babylon 5, Sheridan has Franklin and Marcus travel to Mars to help promote Babylon 5's cause, a trip that will take several weeks to avoid Earth's blockade.

Delenn is called back to Minbar by the religious caste over concerns of her relationship with the human Sheridan. She tries to leave discretely but Lennier, learning of her trip, insists he come with her, knowing she may never be able to return to Babylon 5. On Minbar, Callenn accuses Delenn that a relationship with a species other than Minbari is against their morals and the purity of the Minbari race, and demands she undertake the Dreaming, a ritual that will reveal truths about her past they want her to reveal at her hearing the next day. Lennier offers to be her Protector in the Dreaming.

Within the Dreaming chamber, Delenn's memories reveal her time while she was groomed by Duhkat. Duhkat had seen her potential and helped to prepare her to become a member of the Gray Council. During her induction ceremony into the Council, she held the Triluminary as normal but saw that Duhkat was stunned when the Triluminary glowed. She went to ask him about that after the ceremony when suddenly alarms went off on their ship. Ships from the humans, whom they had known of but not encountered yet, were approaching. The warrior caste decided to approach the ships with gunports open, a sign of respect within Minbar, but it was interpreted as an act of war by the humans; hence they opened fire. Duhkat was gravely wounded and before Delenn could get help, he passed. In her anguish, Delenn made the deciding vote on the Council to pursue the human ships, effectively starting the Human-Minbari war. Delenn was unable to convince the Gray Council to abandon the war once she had more time to reflect.

Knowing this information would be used against her by Callenn, Delenn struggles with nightmares flashing back to Duhkat's death and realizes he was trying to whisper something to her. With Lennier and Callenn in tow, she re-enters the Dreaming to revisit that memory, showing for Callenn that Duhkat had determined she was a descendant of Valen. Now that they know Valen was really the human Jeffrey Sinclair, having traveled back in time and transformed himself into a Minbari hybrid via the Triluminary, Delenn points out that she and any other descendants of Valen are not "pure" Minbari. Should this information be revealed, it would shock Minbari society. Callenn agrees to instead end the hearings and instead offers that Delenn's relationship with Sheridan can be treated as part of the Minbari tradition where, after conflicts between castes, the victorious caste provided a male of the defeated caste a female as a sign of life. Satisfied, Delenn and Lennier return to Babylon 5.
