Shireen Huq, also known as Shirin Parvin Haque, is a women's rights activist, [1] and founder of Naripokkho, a woman's rights organization. [2] [3] She is a trustee board member of Gono Bishwabidyalay. [4] She is the co-convener of Bangladesh Civil Society Platform on Justice and Accountability for the Rohingyas. [5]
Huq was one of the founding member of Naripokkho in 1983. [6] [7] She worked for Danish International Development Agency from 1987 to 2006. [8] [9]
Huq signed a letter with 57 other women leaders calling on the government to not interfere with Grameen Bank in August 2012. [10]
In August 2013, Huq called for the government to release Adilur Rahman Khan. [11]
Huq spoked against the short imprisonment of David Bergman for contempt of court in 2015. [12] She is a founding member of the Committee for the Protection of Fundamental Rights. [13] She called Rezaul Karim Bablu, member of parliament, a Neanderthal for his comments blaming feminist of rape. [14]
In 2023, Huq signed a letter criticizing the government treatment of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, warning it could lead to a political crises, and asking the government to send her abroad for treatment. [15] Other signatories included Ali Imam Majumder, Asif Nazrul, CR Abrar, Farida Akhtar, Hafizuddin Khan, Naila Z Khan, Nur Khan, Rahnuma Ahmed, Shahdeen Malik, Shahidul Alam, Sharmeen Murshid, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, and Tofail Ahmed. In February 2024, Huq met with Rear Adm. Eileen Laubacher, special assistant to the president and senior director for South Asia - national security, Afreen Akhter, state department deputy assistant secretary, and Michael Schiffer, assistant administrator of the bureau for Asia, at the United States embassy to discuss democracy and human rights. [16] The meeting was attended by Adilur Rahman Khan, Debapriya Bhattacharya, and Zillur Rahman, host of Tritiyo Matra . [17] After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government, Huq visited the headquarters of Directorate General of Forces Intelligence to inspect the secret detention facility Aynaghor. [18] She was appointed the chair of the Women Affairs Reform Commission formed by the Muhammad Yunus led Interim government. [19] [20]
Huq married Zafrullah Chowdhury (died 2023), founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra. [21] They have a son, Barish Chowdhury, and a daughter, Brishti Chowdhury. [22] Her sister Nasreen Pervin Huq died in a care accident. [23]
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is a major political party in Bangladesh. Founded on 1 September 1978 by Bangladeshi president Ziaur Rahman with a view of uniting people with a nationalist ideology, BNP later became one of the two dominant parties in Bangladesh, along with its archrival Awami League. The Second Khaleda ministry was the Government of Bangladesh during the 8th legislative session of the Jatiya Sangsad following the 2001 general election. The cabinet took office on 10 October 2001 and left office on 29 October 2006. The Prime Minister and head of the government was Khaleda Zia.

The Banani graveyard is a cemetery in the Banani neighbourhood of Dhaka. It is one of eight state-run graveyards in Dhaka and, with a capacity for around 22,000 graves, one of the largest graveyards in that city. It covers approximately 10 acres and two to three burials take place every day. Banani graveyard is the resting place for a number of notable Bangladeshis, amongst them the victims of the coup d'ètat of August 15, 1975. The graveyard was established in 1973.
The Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust is one of the largest legal aid organization in Bangladesh. The trust provides legal aid, a mediation center, legal advocacy, and files public interest legislation. The organization's headquarter is in Dhaka with 19 field offices. Sara Hossain is the Executive Director of the Trust.
The Majumder–Zia family, or simply the Zia family, is one of the two most prominent Bangladeshi political families, alongside the Sheikh family, which leads Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Adilur Rahman Khan is a human rights activist and the founder of Odhikar, a human rights organisation. He is a lawyer and former Deputy Attorney General for Bangladesh. Since October 2022, Adilur Rahman Khan has been one of the Secretaries General of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH). He has been serving as an adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh since August 2024.

Sharmeen Murshid is a member of the advisory council of the Bangladesh interim government. She was chief executive officer of human rights organization Brotee which has been working for the rights of marginalized groups, especially the indigenous people since 2001. She is currently serving as Adviser to the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs as well as Ministry of Social Welfare. Murshid is a former Commissioner of the National River Conservation Commission.
Simeen Mahmud was a demographics researcher and the lead researcher at the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development at BRAC University. She was a director of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies. She was the coordinator of the Centre for Gender and Social Transformation of BRAC University. She headed the Gender Studies Cluster at BRAC University.
