Shyam Steel Industries Ltd. is an Indian iron and steel company that is engaged in the manufacturing and marketing of iron and steel products. [1] It was established in 1953 and is headquartered in Kolkata. It produces TMT Bar, Billets, Sponge Iron and Ferro Alloys. [2] [3]
Shyam Steel was founded in 1953 by Shriram Beriwal with its first factory in Howrah, West Bengal. Later in 1960, his younger brother Shyam Sunder Beriwala joined the company. In 1960, The company established its Steel Manufacturing Plant in Durgapur, West Bengal in 2005.
The company is associated with the largest institutional projects and public sector undertakings such as National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), railways, military engineering services, Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCI) and various state governments.
In Dec 2023, Shyam Steel received GreenPro Certification from the Confederation of Indian Industry. [4]
In 2024, Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal inaugurated Shyam Steel's fifth integrated plant in Purulia district. It encompasses an area of 600 acres with a capacity of 1.19 million tons. [5]

In March 2023, Shyam Steel was announced the principal sponsor for Lucknow Super Giants in the 2023 Indian Premier League. [7]

The company donated to Friends of Tribal Society, Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra, Ramakrishna Mission Sevashram, Jagannath Temple, Puri and underprivileged women to support education, health, and social development. Mamata Banerjee is an Indian politician who is serving as the eighth and current chief minister of the Indian state of West Bengal since 20 May 2011, the first woman to hold the office. Shibaji Panja is a businessman from Kolkata, known to be close to Mamata Banerjee. Shibaji did his education in Kolkata and started RP Infosystems which was manufacturing the very popular PC brand CHIRAG. Under his guidance, CHIRAG became one of the top indigenously manufactured computer brands in India. He was arrested in February 2015 on charges of having forged papers for taking a Rs. 18 crore loan from Industrial Finance Corporation of India. The arrest occurred while Panja was accompanying Mamata as part of the team returning from a visit to Bangladesh, causing widespread media coverage and opposition accusations of harbouring criminals in her court. Banerjee has said that what businessmen in her entourage may have been doing is not related to her. The Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police investigated and claimed that the purchase order, invoices, ferry receipts and acknowledgement notes were all forged, and the firm address was found to be non-existent. The matter is still sub-judice and Panja was granted bail for the case in question by the competent Court.
