Lucknow Super Giants(LSG) is a professional franchise cricket team based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh that competes in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Founded in 2021, the team plays its home matches at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. The team is owned by RPSG Group.
The Governing Council of the Indian Premier League issued an invitation to tender for two new sides in August 2021. A total of 22 companies declared an interest, but with a high base price for the new teams, there were no more than six serious bidders. The Sanjiv Goenka-owned RPSG Group won the rights to operate the Lucknow franchise with a bid of ₹ 7,090 crore (equivalent to ₹80 billionorUS$950 million in 2023). [2] [3]
The team launched a competition to decide its name, with Lucknow Super Giants chosen in January 2022. which can also be seen in the name of his previous IPL franchise Rising Pune Supergiant, South African Franchise Durban's Super Giant [4] s and also in the renaming of Mohun Bagan Athletic Club's footballing division to Mohun Bagan Super Giant. [5]
At the February 2022 mega auction, the franchise purchased its first set of players. Notable players signed included KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, Mark Wood and Marcus Stoinis. Later in the year, the franchise named Rahul as the captain of the team and former Zimbabwean cricketer Andy Flower as head coach. [6] [7] Additionally, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir was appointed as the team mentor. [8]
In the 2022 season, the franchise finished third in the group stage and qualified for the playoffs. They faced the fourth placed Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Eliminator match and were knocked out at that stage. [9] The 2023 season saw the side again finishing 3rd and losing the eliminator, this time to Mumbai Indians.
The Lucknow Super Giants became one of the 10 most popular cricket clubs from India. As of March 2024, the club had 4.6 million followers on social media. [10]

The team's home ground is the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. During its first season, the team was unable to play any matches at the ground due to restrictions put in place to limit the spread of COVID-19 in India; all of the 2022 league stage matches were hosted in Maharashtra. [13] These restrictions were removed in 2023 and the side played on the ground during the season.

Gautam Gambhir is an Indian former international cricketer, former politician, a philanthropist, and the current head coach of the Indian cricket team in all formats. He played for India in all formats of the game between 2003 and 2016, became the first Indian batsman to secure place in the ICC Rankings of Top 10 Batsman in all three formats. He was a member of the 17th Lok Sabha from 2019 to 2024. He received the Padma Shri from the Government of India in 2019, the fourth highest civilian award in India.
Sanjiv Goenka is an Indian Billionaire Businessman. He is the founder and chairman of RPSG Group and an early-stage investor. With a US$6 billion asset base and US$4.3 billion revenue, this multinational conglomerate is headquartered in Kolkata. He also owns the IPL cricket team Lucknow Super Giants and the Investor of the ISL football team Mohun Bagan. Krunal Himanshu Pandya is an Indian cricketer who has played for the Indian cricket team. He formerly captained Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League. He is an all-rounder who bats left-handed and bowls slow left-arm orthodox. He made his international debut for the Indian cricket team in November 2018. In 2021, he scored the fastest half-century by a cricketer on ODI debut. He is the elder brother of cricketer Hardik Pandya.
Rising Pune Supergiant was a franchise cricket team based in Pune, Maharashtra, that played in the Indian Premier League in 2016 and as a finalist in 2017. It was the second team representing Pune after Pune Warriors India.
