UP Warriorz are an Indian professional franchise women's cricket team that compete in the Women's Premier League (WPL), based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The team is owned by Capri Global. The team is coached by Jon Lewis and captained by Alyssa Healy. The side reached the eliminator at the inaugural edition of the WPL, but lost to Mumbai Indians. [1]

History

In October 2022, the BCCI announced its intentions to hold a five-team women's franchise cricket tournament in March 2023. [2] The tournament was named the Women's Premier League in January 2023, with investors buying the rights to franchises through a closed bidding process during the same month. [3] Capri Global bought the rights to one of the franchises, to be based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. [3]

In February 2023, Jon Lewis was announced as head coach of the side. [4] The inaugural player auction for the WPL was held on 13 February 2023, with UP Warriorz signing 16 players for their squad. [5] The side went on to finish third in the group stage of the inaugural edition of the WPL, qualifying for the eliminator. [6] However, they lost to Mumbai Indians by 72 runs in the eliminator. [1]

Jonathan Lewis is a former England cricketer and current head coach of England Women's Cricket and UP Warriorz in Women's Premier League. He was brought up in Swindon where he was educated at Churchfields School and Swindon College. He played for Swindon CC and, in Minor Counties cricket, for Wiltshire County Cricket Club in 1993. He joined Northamptonshire in 1994 and played for its Second XI but returned to Wiltshire in 1995. In the same year, he joined Gloucestershire and made his first-class debut.
