In cricket, a captain is a player who leads the team and has additional roles and responsibilities. [1] [2] The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional league for Twenty20 cricket in India, [3] which has been held annually since its first edition in 2008. [4] [5]

In the 17 seasons played till 2024, 70 players have captained their team in at least one match. [6] Mumbai Indians' Rohit Sharma and Chennai Super Kings's MS Dhoni are the most successful captains with five IPL titles each. [7] [8] Dhoni also holds the records for most matches (226) and most wins (133) as a captain. [9] [6] Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, and Steven Smith are the only players to have captained three different teams. [10] [6] Shreyas Iyer is the only captain to have led two different sides to the finals of the IPL. [11]

The list includes those players who have captained an IPL team in at least one IPL match. The list is organised by the number of matches as a captain and if the numbers are tied, the list is sorted by the date of first match as captain. [lower-alpha 2] .

Suresh Raina is an Indian former international cricketer. He occasionally served as stand-in captain for the Indian men's national cricket team as well as in IPL for Chennai Super Kings during the absence of the main captain, MS Dhoni. He played for Uttar Pradesh (UP) in domestic cricket circuit. He is an aggressive left-handed middle-order batsman and occasional off-spin bowler. He is the second-youngest player ever to captain India. He was the captain of Gujarat Lions in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and he also served as vice-captain of the Chennai Super Kings. He is the first Indian batsman to hit a century in all three formats of international cricket. During his time with India, he won the 2011 Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. Raina made history being the first Indian to score a century in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which he did with his 101 runs against South Africa at the 2010 Tournament.

Ravindrasinh Anirudhsinh Jadeja is an Indian international cricketer who represents the Indian national cricket team in ODI and Test formats. He is an all-rounder, who bats left-handed and bowls left-arm orthodox spin. He is regarded as one of the best all-rounders of his generation, becoming the fifth Indian and fifth-fastest player to score 2,000 runs and take 200 wickets in Test cricket in 2021. Jadeja was the leading wicket-taker in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy and received the man of the match award as a member of the final-winning team. Later in his career, he was also a part of the team which won the 2024 T20 World Cup, after which he announced his retirement from the T20Is. He represents Saurashtra in first-class cricket and has captained the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. As of August 2023, Ravindra Jadeja is the 7th highest ODI wicket taker for India with 220 wickets.

Delhi Capitals are a Twenty20 franchise cricket team based in Delhi, India. The team plays in the Indian Premier League and competed in the 2019 edition of the competition between March and May 2019. In December 2018, the team changed its name from the Delhi Daredevils. The Capitals started their campaign with a 37 run victory over three-time champions Mumbai. The Capitals finally entered the playoffs after 7 years, and they won their first-ever playoffs match. The Capitals ended up as 2nd runners-up in the playoffs.

Matheesha Pathirana is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer who currently plays limited overs cricket for the national team in limited over internationals. He has been referred to as "Baby Malinga", as he has modelled his bowling action after Lasith Malinga slinging action.

The 2023 cricket season was the 16th season for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The franchise had won the IPL title twice in 2012 and 2014. The franchise had also qualified for the playoffs for three consecutive years in 2016, 2017 and 2018 as well as in 2021, when they were the runners up. In 2023, KKR failed to qualify for the playoffs for the second season in a row, finishing in the seventh place.
