The 2012 Indian Premier League spot-fixing case was a controversy which arose during the 2012 Indian Premier League and led to the banning of five cricketers. It started when a Hindi news channel, India TV, aired a sting operation which accused five players of seeking money in exchange for spot-fixing. [1] Bans were imposed on all five, with a life-ban on Deccan Chargers's TP Sudhindra, a five-year ban on Kings XI Punjab's Shalabh Srivastava, and a one-year ban on Pune Warriors India's Mohnish Mishra and Kings XI Punjab's Amit Yadav. [2] In addition Abhinav Bali, who was not in contact with any team during the 2012 season, was banned for a year. In the sting operation, Bali claimed to have spot-fixed during the 2009 season. [2] According to the sting operation, some of the players revealed that they had received more money from the franchises' owners than agreed on in the players' auction; they said that this money was black money. Sting operation

The sting operation was performed by reporters of India TV Jamshed Khan and Sushant Pathak posing as representatives of various teams. [4] The operation was started in May 2011 and lasted until April of the following year. [4] According to the operation, Srivastava revealed that the money they received from the franchises was black money. [2] According to India TV, he was ready to spot-fix; however, the conversation is only recorded in an audio tape. [2] Bali, who was not in contact with any franchise, claimed to have been involved in spot-fixing during the 2009 season. [2] Mishra claimed that his franchise, Pune Warriors India, gave him around ₹12 million (US$150,000) to ₹14 million (US$180,000). This was against the BCCI guidelines; being an uncapped player, Mishra could not receive more than ₹3 million (US$38,000). [2] [3] TP Sudhindra also bowled a no-ball in a domestic match on the wish of the reporter. [2]

Preliminary inquiry

The BCCI carried out a preliminary inquiry headed by Ravi Sawani, the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit's former chief and the current head of the BCCI Anti-Corruption Unit. [1] IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla announced that the IPL would recommend "strict action against those players who were found guilty" and that "the five players have been suspended from all cricket activities with immediate effect." [1] BCCI president N. Srinivasan added that the organisation has zero tolerance for corruption and would "not tolerate this nonsense". [1]

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has found itself in the middle of many conflicts with various cricket boards around the world as a result of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The main point of contention was that signed players should always be available to their country for international tours, even if it overlaps with the IPL season. To address this, the BCCI officially requested that the International Cricket Council (ICC) to institute a time period in the International Future Tours Programme (FTP), solely for the IPL season. This request was not granted at a subsequent meeting held by the ICC. But since July 2022, ICC FTP granted dedicated 2.5 months window for IPL, during which nearly no international cricket will takes place. IPL is the only cricket league in the world which got dedicated place in ICC FTP.

Spot-fixing is illegal activity in a sport in which a specific aspect of a game, unrelated to the final result but upon which a betting market exists, is fixed in an attempt to ensure a certain result in a proposition bet. Examples include something as minor as timing a no ball or wide delivery in cricket or timing the first throw-in or corner in association football.

The 2013 season of the Indian Premier League, abbreviated as IPL 6 or Pepsi IPL 2013, was the sixth season of the IPL, established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007. The tournament featured nine teams and was held from 3 April to 26 May 2013. The opening ceremony was held at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on 2 April 2013. The 2013 Indian Premier League spot-fixing and betting case arose when the Delhi Police arrested three cricketers, Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, on the charges of alleged spot-fixing. The three represented the Rajasthan Royals in the 2013 Indian Premier League. In a separate case, Mumbai Police arrested Vindu Dara Singh, Priyank Sepany and Chennai Super Kings Team Principal Gurunath Meiyappan for alleged betting.

Gurunath Meiyappan is a member of the AVM family and is the son-in-law of industrialist, former president of the BCCI, and former chairman of the ICC, N. Srinivasan. He was the "team principal" of the IPL cricket franchise, Chennai Super Kings and was implicated in the 2013 Indian Premier League spot-fixing and betting case. An inquiry committee headed by former Chief Justice RM Lodha found both Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals co-owner, Raj Kundra, guilty of bringing the game of cricket into disrepute and banned them for life.

Mudgal Committee is a four-member committee, headed by former High Court judge Mukul Mudgal and comprising the then Additional Solicitor General of India L. Nageswara Rao and senior advocate and former cricket umpire Nilay Dutta to conduct an independent inquiry into the allegations of corruption against BCCI chief N. Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, India Cements, and Rajasthan Royals team owner Jaipur IPS Cricket Private Ltd, as well as with the larger mandate of investigating allegations having to do with betting and spot-fixing in 2013 Indian Premier League matches and the involvement of players.
