"Sleeping with a Friend" is a song written and performed by American rock band Neon Trees. It was originally recorded by the band for their third studio album, Pop Psychology (2014). The song was released as the first single from Pop Psychology on January 11, 2014.

Background

According to Tyler Glenn, "Sleeping with a Friend" was inspired from the album So by Peter Gabriel. Glenn stated "Sonically speaking it's our biggest-sounding song to date". [4]

Reception

Heather Allen at Mind Equals Blown describes it as a catchy song, stating "The keyboard and drums thrown into the spotlight with the guitars subtle in the background is truly what gives "Sleeping With a Friend" its old-school feel." [5]

Pop Psychology is the third studio album by American rock band Neon Trees. The lead single, "Sleeping with a Friend", was released on January 11, 2014, and the album was released on April 22, 2014. The record is based on and is the cathartic product of lead singer, Tyler Glenn’s therapy sessions. Glenn started seeing a therapist after canceling some tour dates in 2012 while the band promoted their second record, Picture Show, due to trying to find himself mentally and figure out who he was. "At moments there's a cry for help and sadness...But I think it's a real fun pop record at the heart of it and something with a message too", he said of his band's third album. Also addressed in the album's lyricism from Glenn's therapy sessions are his sexuality and sex, in general.

The duo began their career as remixers in the city of New York, United States, eventually signing to their first ever major record label. Their 2010 single "Dancing With The DJ" was their first instant online success. Philadelphia hiphop band Chiddy Bang sampled The Knocks' "Blackout" for their single "Here We Go" from their EP The Preview. Chiddy Bang subsequently sampled The Knocks' "When You've Got Music" and "Dancing with the DJ" for their mixtape Peanut Butter and Swelly. After the success of "Dancing With The DJ", their debut extended play, entitled Magic was released in 2011.
