The inaugural election to South Pembrokeshire District Council was held in April 1973. Independent candidates won nearly all the seats. [1] It was followed by the 1976 election. On the same day there were elections to the other local authorities and community councils in Wales.
South Pembrokeshire was one of six local government districts of Dyfed, Wales from 1974 to 1996.
Wales is a country that is part of the United Kingdom and the island of Great Britain. It is bordered by England to the east, the Irish Sea to the north and west, and the Bristol Channel to the south. It had a population in 2011 of 3,063,456 and has a total area of 20,779 km2 (8,023 sq mi). Dyfed is a preserved county of Wales. It was created on 1 April 1974, as an amalgamation of the three pre-existing counties of Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. It was abolished twenty-two years later, on 1 April 1996, when the three original counties were reinstated, Cardiganshire being renamed Ceredigion the following day. The name "Dyfed" is retained for certain ceremonial and other purposes. It is a mostly rural county in southwestern Wales with a coastline on the Irish Sea and the Bristol Channel.
Pembroke was the establishing county town of Pembrokeshire in Wales. Pembroke still features a number of historic buildings, town walls and complexes. It is a community and one of the larger towns in the county with a population of 7,552.
