South Putnam High School is a public high school located on the southern edge of Greencastle, Indiana in the heart of Putnam County. South Putnam High School serves students in the south central Putnam County area. There is also one middle school, South Putnam Middle School and two elementary schools, Fillmore and Central, that feed into South Putnam High School. South Putnam High School was ranked, in 2018, as the #18 high school in Indiana by U.S. News & World Report, the highest ranking of any Indiana public high school with less than 400 students. [3] South Putnam High School is a school in South Putnam Community Schools, which is crossed by Interstate 70, U.S. Route 40, and U.S. Route 231. With the relative access to many highways, South Putnam is located in the crossroads between the cities of Terre Haute, Bloomington, Lafayette/West Lafayette, and Indianapolis, four university cities that have many prominent programs in various fields of study, which makes South Putnam a center of activity located between these four cities. Additionally, DePauw University is located four miles north in nearby Greencastle, IN.
In 1969, the high schools located in Belle Union, Fillmore, and Reelsville consolidated to form South Putnam High School. The school nickname “Eagles” was chosen. The school colors combine red (Fillmore Cardinals), Blue (Belle Union Panthers), and White (Reelsville Warriors) into the color scheme of South Putnam.
The school participated in the West Central Conference until 2015 when the conference merged with the Western Indiana Conference. Students can participate in a variety of sports including boys’ and girls’ golf, tennis, swimming/diving, basketball, track/field, cross country, wrestling, football, girls’ volleyball, boys’ baseball, and girls’ softball
Academically, students at South Putnam High School have the option to take part in Advanced Placement courses, Advance College Project courses through Indiana University, College Challenge courses through Indiana State University, ALPHA Program at DePauw University and Ivy Tech Community College dual credit courses. This enables students at South Putnam to earn the Statewide Transfer General Education Core, a unique opportunity that South Putnam is one of few area schools to offer.

Putnam County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 36,726. The county seat is Greencastle. The county was named for Israel Putnam, a hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War. The county was created in 1821 and organized in April 1822.

It is located near Interstate 70 approximately halfway between Terre Haute and Indianapolis in the west-central portion of the state. The city is the home of DePauw University. The population was 9,820 at the 2020 census.
DePauw University is a private liberal arts college in Greencastle, Indiana. It was founded in 1837 as Indiana Asbury College and changed its name to DePauw University in 1884. The college has a Methodist heritage and was founded to be an ecumenical institution of national stature, "conducted on the most liberal principles, accessible to all religious denominations and designed for the benefit of our citizens in general".

The school was established in 1975 with the merger of Wainwright and Southwestern high schools and is named after John T. McCutcheon, who was a political cartoonist and Tippecanoe County native. Castle High School, previously known as John H. Castle High School is a public high school located about a mile northeast of Newburgh, Indiana on Indiana 261. Castle is one of three high schools in the Warrick County School Corporation. The Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) is a high school athletic conference in Southwestern Indiana with its headquarters at Forest Park. It is the largest athletic conference in the state of Indiana with 13 member schools. The conference is composed primarily of Class 3A schools, with a few 2A and one 1A. Schools are currently located in Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, and Warrick counties.

The Hoosier Heartland Conference is an IHSAA-Sanctioned Athletic Conference in North Central Indiana. It comprises mainly single A and smaller AA schools. Lafayette Central Catholic joined the Hoosier Athletic Conference after the 2010–11 school year, and was replaced by Sheridan, who joined 2012. With the major conference realignment in Indiana in 2015, the conference picked up four schools from neighboring conferences that were folding, as well as a football-only member to balance the new football divisions. However, with the Midwest Conference reforming, the conference will be down to eight schools for the 2018–19 school year, as Delphi will rejoin the conference in 2019.

The Western Indiana Conference is the name of two IHSAA-sanctioned conferences based in West Central Indiana. The first formed as an eight-team league that formed as a basketball league in 1944 as the West Central Conference. The league started expanding in 1945 and changed its name to the Western Indiana Conference. With consolidation forcing many membership changes in the 1970s, the conference folded at four members in 1983.
Karl L. Schlademan was an American college sports coach and athletics administrator. Principally a track and field coach, Schlademan also coached football, basketball and cross country. He served as the head track and field coach at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana in 1914, the University of Kansas from 1919 to 1926, the State College of Washington—now known as Washington State University—from 1926 to 1940, and Michigan State University from 1940 to 1958.
Albertus Theodore Briggs was a Methodist Episcopal minister for more than 40 years, and a District Superintendent in the Hammond and Greencastle districts in Indiana. For years, he was the President of the Preachers' Aid Society, now the United Methodist Foundation of Indiana.
Robert Bergman is a former American football and track and field coach. He served as the head football coach at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana from 1968 to 1976 and DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana from 1977 to 1978, compiling a career college football coaching record of 39–60–2.
