Space Encounters is an arcade video game released by Bally Midway in 1980. The game recreates the trench flying scene from Star Wars but with the player in a TIE fighter. The player's ship shoots at waves of enemies flying down from the top. The moving background graphics provide the illusion of an isometric 3D view, but the action is in 2D and plays like a fixed shooter.
This was the first Midway game to be released in a cabaret-sized cabinet, what they referred to as their "mini myte" line.
The game takes place in a U-shaped playfield known as the "Space Channel" [1] representing a trench inspired by the Death Star. Normally grey, the walls and floor of the trench periodically incorporate black bands running horizontally that move down the screen to provide the illusion of rapid forward motion over the trench. Most versions include a color gel over the screen to provide color to the playfield. [2] A red lamp and a strobe light at the top of the cabinet are used for additional effects. [3] [lower-alpha 1]
The player commands the "Assault Ship" [4] [lower-alpha 2] which starts near the bottom of the screen. Waves of enemy ships appear at the top of the screen, outside the playfield area. In small groups, they move into the trench where they become active. [2] The enemies periodically fire down the screen at the player, while the player shoots upward. The player's shots can hit the enemies or their shots. When an enemy is hit, it turns into a broken ship that then tumbles down the screen towards the player, bouncing off the trench walls. The tumbling ships have to be avoided or shot; if shot they produce another score. Periodically a target appears, like the Death Star's thermal exhaust port, giving a bonus score if the user hits it within the five seconds it remains on screen. [6]
The game is on a timer, typically 90 seconds, but adjustable at the arcade for 45, 60, 75 or 90 seconds. [1] If the player's ship is hit or contacts the trench walls, it tumbles out of the trench in a fashion similar to Darth Vader at the end of Star Wars . After a brief delay it regains control and flies back into the trench to continue the action. If the player has any bonus ships the action continues after the timer elapses until they have all been hit. Scoring is based on the number and type of enemies killed, any bonus targets, as well as a speed score based on the player's position up the screen. Up to three bonus ships can be awarded at adjustable scores, typically 4000, 8000 and 16000 points. [6] The speed score is added at the end of the game and does not contribute to the bonus ships. [1]
Space Encounters is based on a common Intel 8080-based chassis that had been used by Midway all the way from 1975 when they introduced Gun Fight . [7]
In the original cabinet, the player controls the action with an aircraft-style control yoke with fire buttons on the top of the right hand hold. Turning the yoke side-to-side movex the player's sprite left and right on the screen, while pushing it into the cabinet movex the player up the screen and sped up the action. Midway released a second version in a smaller case that replaced the yoke with a large joystick, the first of a number of smaller-format machines they marketed as the "mini myte" series of cabaret-sized machines that allows three games to fit in the area normally taken up by two full-sized machines. Launched into the market at the same time as full-color shooters like Galaxian , the game was a flop in the market. [8] All future Midway games would use color capable hardware, often the Zilog Z80-based chassis licensed from Namco and used in the US releases of Rally-X and Pac-Man . [7]
Pinball games are a family of games in which a ball is propelled into a specially designed table where it bounces off various obstacles, scoring points either en route or when it comes to rest. Historically the board was studded with nails called 'pins' and had hollows or pockets which scored points if the ball came to rest in them. Today, pinball is most commonly an arcade game in which the ball is fired into a specially designed cabinet known as a pinball machine, hitting various lights, bumpers, ramps, and other targets depending on its design. The game's object is generally to score as many points as possible by hitting these targets and making various shots with flippers before the ball is lost. Most pinball machines use one ball per turn, and the game ends when the ball(s) from the last turn are lost. The biggest pinball machine manufacturers historically include Bally Manufacturing, Gottlieb, Williams Electronics and Stern Pinball.
Xenophobe is a video game developed by Bally Midway and released in arcades in 1987. Starbases, moons, ships, and space cities are infested with aliens, and the players have to kill the aliens before each is completely overrun. The screen is split into three horizontally-scrolling windows, one for each of up to three players, yet all players are in the same game world.
Joust is an action game developed by Williams Electronics and released in arcades in 1982. While not the first two-player cooperative video game, Joust's success and polished implementation popularized the concept. Players assume the role of knights armed with lances and mounted on large birds, who must fly around the screen and defeat enemy knights riding buzzards.
Wrecking Crew is an action game developed and published by Nintendo. Designed by Yoshio Sakamoto, it was first released as an arcade video game for the Nintendo VS. System in 1984, titled Vs. Wrecking Crew with a simultaneous two-player mode. It was released as a single-player game for the Family Computer (Famicom) console in 1985, and as a launch game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) later that year. A sequel, Wrecking Crew '98, was released in Japan in 1998 for the Super Famicom.
Breakout is an arcade video game developed and published by Atari, Inc. and released on May 13, 1976. It was designed by Steve Wozniak, based on conceptualization from Nolan Bushnell and Steve Bristow, who were influenced by the seminal 1972 Atari arcade game Pong. In Breakout, a layer of bricks lines the top third of the screen and the goal is to destroy them all by repeatedly bouncing a ball off a paddle into them. The arcade game was released in Japan by Namco. Breakout was a worldwide commercial success, among the top five highest-grossing arcade video games of 1976 in both the United States and Japan and then among the top three highest-grossing arcade video games of 1977 in the US and Japan. The 1978 Atari VCS port uses color graphics instead of a monochrome screen with colored overlay.
Defender is a horizontally scrolling shooter developed by Williams Electronics in 1980 and released as an arcade video game in 1981. The game is set on either an unnamed planet or city where the player must defeat waves of invading aliens while protecting astronauts. Development was led by Eugene Jarvis, a pinball programmer at Williams; Defender was Jarvis's first video game project and drew inspiration from Space Invaders and Asteroids. Defender was demonstrated in late 1980, before entering production in early 1981. It was distributed in Japan by Taito.
Galaxian is a 1979 fixed shooter arcade video game developed and published by Namco. The player assumes control of the Galaxip starfighter in its mission to protect Earth from waves of aliens. Gameplay involves destroying each formation of aliens, who dive down towards the player in an attempt to hit them.
Stargate is a horizontally scrolling shooter released as an arcade video game in 1981 by Williams Electronics. Created by Eugene Jarvis and Larry DeMar, it is a sequel to Defender which was released earlier in the year. It was the first of only three productions from Vid Kidz, an independent development house formed by Jarvis and DeMar. Some home ports of Stargate were renamed to Defender II for legal reasons.
Gorf is an arcade video game released in 1981 by Midway Manufacturing, whose name was advertised as an acronym for "Galactic Orbiting Robot Force". It is a fixed shooter with five distinct levels, the first of which is based on Space Invaders and another on Galaxian. The game makes heavy use of synthesized speech for the Gorfian robot which taunts the player, powered by the Votrax speech chip. Gorf allows the player to buy two additional lives per quarter before starting the game, for a maximum of seven lives.
Tempest is a 1981 arcade video game by Atari, Inc., designed and programmed by Dave Theurer. It takes place on a three-dimensional surface divided into lanes, sometimes as a closed tube, and viewed from one end. The player controls a claw-shaped "blaster" that sits on the edge of the surface, snapping from segment to segment as a rotary knob is turned, and can fire blaster shots to destroy enemies and obstacles by pressing a button.
Star Wars is a first-person rail shooter designed by Mike Hally and released as an arcade video game in 1983 by Atari, Inc. It uses 3D color vector graphics to simulate the assault on the Death Star from the 1977 film Star Wars. There are three connected gameplay sequences: combat against TIE fighters in space, flying across the surface of the Death Star, and the final trench run. The sequence repeats with added complications and the Death Star regenerating for each. The player's X-Wing fighter has a shield which only protects against damage a certain number of times, then the next hit ends the game. Speech synthesis emulates actors from the film.

Star Fire is a first-person arcade coin-operated space combat video game created by Technical Magic for Midway-Bally and licensed for manufacture to Exidy in December 1978. It was distributed in Japan by Taito and Esco Trading in 1979. Designed by Caltech engineers Ted Michon, and David Rolfe and inspired by the film Star Wars, the game is not based on a licensed property.
Blaster is a first-person rail shooter released as an arcade video game by Williams Electronics in 1983. It was developed by Eugene Jarvis and Larry DeMar. A vague sequel to Robotron: 2084, the game is a shoot 'em up set in outer space. The goal is to destroy enemies, avoid obstacles, and rescue astronauts in twenty levels, to reach paradise.
Starship 1 is a first-person shooter space combat game developed and manufactured for arcades in 1977 by Atari, Inc. The game, which takes great inspiration from the television series Star Trek, contains the first known Easter egg in any arcade game. The arcade game was distributed in Japan by Namco in 1978, and was ported to the Atari 2600 as Star Ship.

Sea Wolf is an arcade video game designed by Dave Nutting and released by Midway in 1976. It is a video game update of an electro-mechanical Midway game, Sea Devil, itself based on Sega's 1966 electro-mechanical arcade submarine simulator Periscope. The game was released in Japan by Taito. In Sea Wolf, the player, piloting an unseen submarine, launches torpedoes vertically in an attempt to sink ships moving horizontally across the screen before time runs out. The screen is viewed through a faux periscope mounted on the cabinet.
Off the Wall is an arcade game produced by Atari Games and released in North America in 1991. A remake of Breakout, it has a much wider variety of gameplay elements of the original. Most notably, it models spin on the ball. Off the Wall supports up to three players simultaneously. The game's graphics include many backgrounds modeled after modern abstract art. In spite of the identical title, this is a different game from the 1989 Atari 2600 cartridge release.
Speed Race is a 1974 arcade racing video game developed and manufactured by Taito and released under the titles Racer and Wheels in North America by distributor Midway Manufacturing in 1975. Designed by Tomohiro Nishikado, the gameplay involves the player using the attached steering wheel to maneuver a car alongside a fast vertical scrolling road. The objective is to score points by driving past other cars without colliding with them; more points are awarded for driving faster. Players must do this under a 90-second time limit, which ends the game when it runs out. The gameplay concepts were adapted from two earlier driving electro-mechanical games: Kasco's Mini Drive (1958) and Taito's Super Road 7 (1970).
Space Zap is a space-themed fixed shooter arcade video game developed by Game-A-Tron and licensed to Midway Manufacturing in 1980. The player controls the defenses of an immobile base in the center of the screen which is attacked from the top, bottom, left, and right. Pressing one of four oversized buttons moves the gun in the corresponding direction. A fifth button fires. Space Zap shipped in three form factors: standard upright, cocktail, and Bally's Mini-Myte reduced size cabinet.
