Summer Olympics appearances (overview)

Sri Lanka competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France from 26 July to 11 August 2024. This marked Sri Lanka's nineteenth appearance at the Summer Olympics, with the exception of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Seven of the nation's previous Olympic appearances were under the name Ceylon.

Contents

The Sri Lankan delegation consisted of six athletes (three male and female) competing in three sports. [1] Badminton athlete Viren Nettasinghe and javelin thrower Dilhani Lekamge were the country's flagbearers during the opening ceremony. [2]

Athletics

Sri Lanka qualified three track and field athletes (one man and two women). Tharushi Karunarathna and Dilhani Lekamge both qualified directly through the World Rankings. [3] [4] Aruna Darshana qualified after receiving a reallocated quota spot. [5] [6] [7] [8] Athletes achieved qualified through their respective world rankings, in the following events:

Badminton

Sri Lanka qualified one male badminton player through the BWF Race to Paris rankings as of April 30, 2024. [9] [10] [11] At the age of 20, Viren Nettasinghe became the youngest badminton athlete to qualify for the Olympics from Sri Lanka. [12]

Swimming

Sri Lanka received two universality quota spots from FINA (one man and one woman). [13] The Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union selected the highest ranked eligible swimmers in their respective events based on results at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar. [14] [15]

Nadeeka Lakmali Bambarenda Liyanage is a Sri Lankan javelin thrower. She is regarded one of the finest javelin throwers in Sri Lanka with global fame. She is also attached with the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and current national record holder in women's javelin throw event.

She was the first Sri Lankan gymnast across all disciplines to compete in the Olympics. She also represented Sri Lanka at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics and the 2019 and 2022 World Championships.

Dissanayaka Mudiyanselage Tharushi Dilsara Karunaratne is a Sri Lankan middle-distance runner who competes mainly in the 800 metres. She won a gold medal at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships held in Bangkok in the 400m women's event and also the broke the 25 year old Asian record in the event.

Pulikkutty Arachchilage Viren Nettasinghe is a Sri Lankan badminton player. He qualified to represent Sri Lanka at the 2024 Summer Olympics and was named his country's flag bearer.
