Summer Olympics appearances (overview)

Paraguay competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris from 26 July to 11 August 2024. It was the nation's seventeenth appearance at the Summer Olympics. It is the nation's fourteenth straight appearance at the Summer Olympics, except for the 1980 edition in Moscow, because of the nation's partial support for the US-led boycott. Paraguay has yet to earn its first Olympic gold medal; César Almirón was disqualified from the repechange in the Men's 200 m, and Paraguay were eliminated by Egypt in the quarterfinals in football 4-5 on penalty kicks.

Men's tournament

Paraguay men's football team qualified for the Olympics following the triumph of the champion title at the 2024 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament in Venezuela, marking the nation's return to the sport, after the last participation in 2004. [5] [6]

Team roster

Paraguay announced their final squad on 3 July 2024. [7] Gatito Fernández and Fabián Balbuena were added to the squad on 9 July, replacing the injured Ángel González and Gustavo Caballero. [8] On 15 July, Fabrizio Peralta withdrew injured and was replaced by Julio Enciso. [9] On 23 July, Diego González withdrew injured and was replaced by Gustavo Caballero, while Ángel Cardozo Lucena was called-up as an alternate player. [10]

The men's football tournament at the 2024 Summer Olympics was an international football tournament held in France from 24 July to 9 August 2024. The sixteen participating national teams were required to submit squads of 18 players – of which two had to be goalkeepers – by 3 July 2024, 21 days prior to the opening match of the tournament. At least fifteen players in the list had to be born on or after 1 January 2001, and three of whom could be older dispensation players. Additionally, teams could name a maximum of four alternate players, numbered from 19 to 22. The alternate list could contain at most three outfielders, as at least one slot was reserved for a goalkeeper. In the event that a player on the submitted squad list suffered an injury or illness, that player would have been able to be replaced by one of the players in the alternate list. Only players in these squads were eligible to take part in the tournament.

Gustavo Rubén Caballero González is a Paraguayan professional footballer who plays as a midfielder or forward for Primera División club Nacional.
