Saturday night April 12, 2003, in front of a crowd close to 1,000 fans, owner and then head coach Nancy Simonds led St. Louis’s first women’s full contact football team onto the field at Gateway Tech to take on NWFA opponent the Kansas City Krunch. Simonds, was the first female head coach in the history of the NWFA. Myrt Davis caught a pass on the SLAM’s first possession and went the distance for a touchdown, but the SLAM lost a heartbreaker that inaugural game in overtime. The SLAM struggled that first season matching up against seasoned and NWFA southern powerhouses such as the Oklahoma City Lightning and the Nashville Dream. The SLAM finished the season 3-5. To date, the 03’ season is the only SLAM losing season.

The Slam played in the National Women's Football Association from their inception in 2003 until 2008. In 2009 they joined WFA. On August 15, 2009, the Slam won the first Women's Football Alliance league championship game, defeating the West Michigan Mayhem 21–14 at Pan American Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana. They won three more championships while competing in Division 2 of the WFA (2016, 2017, 2019). In 2021, they elevated to the Pro Division of the WFA — the most competitive field of teams in the sport women's football. The Slam won their first Pro Division Championship in July 2024 when they defeated the 5 time national champions, Boston Renegades on ESPN 2
