The Columbus Comets were a women's professional American football team based in Columbus, Ohio. [1] They played in the Women's Football Alliance. The Comets played in the National Women's Football Association from their inception in 2003 until 2008 (in 2003 they were known as the Columbus Flames). Their home games were played at Grove City Christian School in Grove City, Ohio.
The Columbus Comets were founded as the Columbus Flames in 2003 as part of the National Women's Football Association. The founder was Donna Ford, but she sold the team for the second year and the team name was changed to the Comets by new owner Lori Davis. [2]
In 2004, the Comets became the first Women's Professional Football team to play at an National Football League stadium, when they defeated the Cleveland Fusion at Cleveland Browns Stadium 20-7. [3]
The team played in the 2007 NWFA Championship, but lost to the Pittsburgh Passion. [4]
The team began playing their games at Grove City Christian School's Huffaker Community Sports Complex in 2008. [2]
The team joined the Women's Football Alliance in 2009 following the disbanding of their previous league and long-time head coach Hank Patterson, purchased the team. [5] The team made the WFA Championship in 2010, but lost to the Lone Star Mustangs 12-16, in their only loss of the season.
In 2016, the team dropped to WFA Division II and remained in the division until they folded following the cancelation of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [6]

The National Women's Football Association (NWFA) was a full-contact American football league for women headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. The league was founded by Catherine Masters in 2000, as the two benchmark teams, the Alabama Renegades and the Nashville Dream played each other six times in exhibition games. The opening season was in 2001 featuring ten teams. The NWFA did not officially field any teams for the 2009 season.
Joseph Francis Carr was an American sports executive in football, baseball, and basketball. He is best known as the president of the National Football League from 1921 until 1939. Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, formerly Fawcett Stadium, is a football stadium and entertainment complex in Canton, Ohio. It is a major component of Hall of Fame Village, located adjacent to the grounds of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The venue hosts the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game and serves as the home field for the football teams from Canton McKinley High School. It also served as the home field for Malone University from 1993 to 2018 and Walsh University from 1998 to 2022. It also served as the home stadium for a number of other Canton-area high schools.

The franchise was formed in March 2002 and is currently owned by Teresa Conn, Anthony Misitano, and the family of Franco Harris. The team is a part of the Women's Football Alliance, with home games played at West Allegheny High School in Imperial, Pennsylvania.

Gaylord Roscoe "Pete" Stinchcomb was an American football player. He played quarterback and halfback at Ohio State University where he was selected as a consensus All-American in 1920. He later played professional football as a back for the Chicago Bears (1921–1922), Columbus Tigers (1923), Cleveland Indians (1923), and Louisville Colonels (1926). He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1973.
The Cincinnati Sizzle is a women's professional full-contact/tackle football team from Cincinnati, Ohio. The team was established in 2003, by former Cincinnati Bengals running back Ickey Woods. Steve Sherman is the current owner of the Cincinnati Sizzle, as of the 2018 season, with Michelle Terrell continues in her 15th year as general manager. The regular season spans from April to July. Previously, the Militia played in the Independent Women's Football League from 2008 until 2010, winning the IWFL championship in 2010. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, the Militia played its home games at Dilboy Stadium in nearby Somerville.

The Detroit Dark Angels were a women's semi-professional American football team founded in 2010 by Chuck Lauber and Aaron Brothers. In 2014, the team was purchased and reorganized as a 501(c)3 corporation DDA Football Inc., by a group that included former Detroit Demolition players Alecia Sweeney and Yarlen Henry along with Coach Keith Thomas.
The 2012 Women's Football Alliance season was the fourth season of the Women's Football Alliance, a league of 64 teams. The regular season began on Saturday, April 2, and ended on Saturday, June 18. After the playoffs, which fielded 12 teams in each conference instead of the 8 that were fielded in the 2011 season, the season ended with the WFA Championship Game on Saturday, August 4 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game was shown live on ESPN3, the first time a live women's football game has been shown on a major network. In the championship, the San Diego Surge defeated the Chicago Force 40–36, winning its first championship, having lost the previous year to the Boston Militia.

In September 2018, she became the first woman hired as a full-time NCAA Division I coach, when she was promoted by Dartmouth, after briefly working as an intern for the team.
