The church was established at the county seat in 1862 as a mission of St. Joseph's, Rossville, becoming the fifth Catholic church on Staten Island. [1] Prior to construction of the church, the Catholic community in the area was served by the founding pastor John Barry, a priest from Rossville, as well as by James Roosevelt Bayley, a future archbishop. [2] The early Romanesque Revival-style building was built in 1862, and a steeple was added in 1898. [2] [3]
The Church of St. Joseph is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, and the oldest extant Roman Catholic church on Staten Island. James Roosevelt Bayley was an American prelate of the Catholic Church. He served as the first Bishop of Newark (1853–72) and the eighth Archbishop of Baltimore (1872–77).
Romanesque Revival is a style of building employed beginning in the mid-19th century inspired by the 11th- and 12th-century Romanesque architecture. Unlike the historic Romanesque style, however, Romanesque Revival buildings tended to feature more simplified arches and windows than their historic counterparts.
St. Patrick's became an independent parish in 1884. [1] During 1914–1922, St. Patrick's established four Staten Island mission churches that grew to become independent parishes: St. Margaret Mary, Our Lady Queen of Peace, St. Clare, and St. Charles. [1] The church was declared an official city landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission on February 20, 1968. [2] [3]
The Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace is a parish church in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, located at 90 Third Street in the New Dorp neighborhood of Staten Island, New York City. It was established on October 10, 1922, and the present church building was inaugurated on Christmas Eve, 1928.
Church of Saint Clare, located in the Great Kills neighborhood of Staten Island, New York City, is the largest-membership parish under the authority of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. It is dedicated to Clare of Assisi, and it includes a co-educational PreK–8 Catholic school and Religious Education program. It became an independent parish in 1925 and has six principal buildings dating from 1921 to 1979: the church, school, converted convent, parish center, chapel, and rectory. St. Clare's has received national attention for its architecture, its educational programs, and its heavy casualties from the September 11 attacks.
