Steeple is a village on the Dengie Peninsula in Essex, England. It is situated just east of Maylandsea and Mayland, on the southern side of the River Blackwater estuary.

A hamlet, within the village of Steeple, on the banks of the River Blackwater is called Stansgate.

Steeple Church

The original parish church of St Lawrence, located 600 yards (550 m) west of the present building, [2] was destroyed by fire.[ citation needed ] The current church was built in the centre of the village c.1882–84 re-using some materials from the old church. [3] [4]

On the west side of the village, there is a former chapel building of the Peculiar People, built in 1877. [5] [6]

Stansgate Priory

Stansgate Priory was a Cluniac Priory built near to the banks of the River Blackwater in about 1120. It was one of many priories closed by Thomas Cromwell in 1534. [7]

Viscounts Stansgate

The village has been home to several generations of the Benn family, who were created Viscounts Stansgate in 1942, since about 1900. They live in Stansgate House. [7] [8]

Viscount Stansgate, of Stansgate in the County of Essex, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1942 for the Labour politician, former Secretary of State for India and future Secretary of State for Air, William Wedgwood Benn. He was the second son of Sir John Benn, 1st Baronet, of The Old Knoll. Stansgate's eldest son and heir apparent, Michael Benn, was later killed in the Second World War. Consequently, he was succeeded in the title by his second son, the Labour politician Tony Benn, who disclaimed the peerage on 31 July 1963, the day the Peerage Act 1963 passed into law and made it possible for him to do so. As of 2022, the title is held by Tony Benn's eldest son, Stephen Benn, 3rd Viscount Stansgate.

St Lawrence Bay is a village in Essex, UK. It is in an area known as the Dengie Hundred, next to the River Blackwater.

Maylandsea, and the adjacent Mayland, are villages on the Dengie Peninsula in the English county of Essex. They are part of the Althorne ward of the Maldon district, and have a parish council that covers both villages. Mayland is home to the most successful Dengie football club, after their exhilarating 2-0 Victory on Tuesday the 28th of May 2024.
