Stratford University was a private university based in Virginia. Founded in 1976, Stratford delivered online, classroom, and blended online/classroom programs. [3] It closed at the end of the Fall 2022 semester after losing its accreditation. [4] [5]
Stratford University had campuses in Virginia (Alexandria, [6] Woodbridge, [7] ) Maryland (Baltimore [8] [9] ), and India (New Delhi [10] [11] ). The majority of the student body was non-traditional and worked full-time while attending school. Stratford's international student body represented over thirty countries. [12] Approximately 20 percent of the student body was international and 20 percent was military.
The Stratford campus in India was a joint venture with the Modi Group, created to offer residential American degrees in India. The legal name of the Indian joint venture is Modi Stratford Education Management (MSEM), Pvt. Ltd. The Modi Stratford Foundation, a wholly owned non-profit subsidiary of MSEM, delivered the academic programs in India as an overseas campus of Stratford University. [13]
Stratford University signed a letter of intent for an affiliation with Baltimore International College (BIC) on August 12, 2011. [14] The university received approval from the Maryland Higher Education Commission and Baltimore officially became an additional location of Stratford University on December 1, 2011. [8]
Stratford University signed a memorandum of understanding with Sojourner-Douglass College (SDC) on April 2, 2015. [15] The memorandum outlined which SDC programs would transition to Stratford after June 30, 2015, the date that SDC would lose its accreditation. This location was renamed the Sojourner-Douglass Center at Stratford University.
Stratford University received the Virginia V3 Perseverando Award for both 2015 and 2016. The awards were presented to Stratford by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe of at the Annual Chamber of Commerce Workforce Conference in Richmond. [16] [17] [18] [19]
In 2016, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker presented Stratford University with the President’s "E" Award for Exports. It is the highest recognition any U.S. entity can receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. The 'E' Awards noted Stratford University's dedication to providing quality education to students around the world, particularly its investment in language training programs. [20] [21] [22]
In 2019, Stratford announced that it would be closing three of its campuses in Virginia, including campuses in Newport News and Virginia Beach. [23] Noting Stratford's problems with its accreditor, The Center for Immigration Studies labeled the school as a "marginal university." [24]
In 2020, Stratford's accreditor, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, was investigating the school for allegedly operating an unapproved program in Irbil, Iraq. [25]
In 2022, the United States Department of Education decertified Stratford's accreditor, causing the university to announce that it would cease operations following the end of the Fall 2022 term. [4] The following year, Stratford University filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. [26]
Stratford awarded graduate and undergraduate degrees. Online, residential, and blended programs were available. All online and blended courses used the Stratford online Moodle platform hosted in Stratford's data center. [27]
Stratford had established programs to help US military and former-US military personnel complete their education and was recognized by the Veterans Administration as a member of the Yellow Ribbon Program. [28] Stratford offered non-credit continuing education and professional development courses like Event Management Certificate Program, Culinary Workshops and Certification Courses including Oracle, MSCE, .Net Framework, Cisco, Linux, and computer security-related topics for students and IT professionals.
Stratford's Language Institute offered an academic English as Second Language (ESL) program to help international students enter a degree program. [29]
Washington Monthly's 2020 rankings placed Stratford number 605 out of 614 masters-level universities in social mobility. [30]
Stratford University was accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) to award degrees through the master's level. [31] It was exempt from requirements of oversight to grant Associate, Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate degrees by State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). [32]
Stratford's nursing program was approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing [33] and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. [34] The university's medical assisting program was accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools and its Language Institute was accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation.
Stratford's culinary programs were accredited by the American Culinary Federation (ACF). [35] Stratford was a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals. [36]
Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) is a public community college in Baltimore, Maryland. It is the only community college in the city and the only state-sponsored community college in the state. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). It was founded in 1947 and has about 5,000 students enrolled in one of its campuses.
The University of Portland (UP) is a private Catholic university in Portland, Oregon. It was founded in 1901 and is affiliated with the Congregation of Holy Cross, which also founded UP's sister school, the University of Notre Dame. The university enrolls approximately 3,730 students.
The State University of New York at Delhi is a public college in Delhi, New York. It is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Over 3,000 students attend the institution.
Monroe College is a private for-profit college in New York City. It was founded in 1933 and has campuses in the Bronx, New Rochelle and Saint Lucia, with degree programs also available through Monroe Online. The college is named after James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
West Virginia University at Parkersburg is a public community college in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Although it was originally part of West Virginia University, it is now an independent public institution with its own board of governors and degree-granting authority. Conceived as a community college to serve seven counties in west central West Virginia, it now offers baccalaureate programs. It is the largest community college in West Virginia and the state's fifth largest public college with over 3,900 students.
Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) is a public community college in Arnold, Maryland. The college was founded in 1961 and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The community college offers letters of recognition, 46 associate degree programs, and 62 certificate programs through its five schools.
Saddleback College (Saddleback) is a public community college in Mission Viejo, California. It is part of the California Community College system and awards over 300 associate degrees, academic certificates, and occupational skills awards in 190 programs. Established in 1968, Saddleback is the oldest and southernmost institution governed by the South Orange County Community College District. Saddleback College is named for the saddle between the twin peaks of Santiago Peak and Modjeska Peak in the Cleveland National Forest.
The Baltimore International College (BIC), founded in 1972, was a private, non-profit college located in Baltimore, Maryland. It offered specialized degree programs in Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management. The college was taken over by Stratford University in January 2012. Stratford University finally closed operations due to bankruptcy in February 2023.
Sojourner–Douglass College was a private college organized around an Afrocentric focus of study and located in Baltimore, Maryland. The college was founded in 1972 and focused on educating mature students. The college's accreditation was revoked by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools effective June 30, 2015, and the college remains closed for instruction.
William Carey University is a private Christian university in Mississippi, affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Mississippi Baptist Convention. The main campus is in Hattiesburg, and a second campus is in the Tradition community north of Biloxi.
Maryville University of St. Louis is a private university in Town and Country, Missouri. It was originally founded on April 6, 1872, by the Society of the Sacred Heart and offers more than 90 degrees at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels to students from 50 states and 47 countries. The school's name is derived from the shortening and altering of "Mary's Villa" when the school opened as an all women-school in the country outside of the order's original downtown St. Louis location in 1872. In 1961 it moved to suburban St. Louis and in 1968 began admitting men. Since 1972 the university has been governed by a board of trustees consisting mostly of members of the laity, although five of the trustees are always associated with the Society of the Sacred Heart. The school's athletic nickname is now the Saints.
Cebu Normal University, also referred to by its acronym CNU, is a state research university in Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines established in 1902.
A cooking school is an institution devoted to education in the art and science of cooking and food preparation. There are many different types of cooking schools around the world, some devoted to training professional chefs, others aimed at amateur enthusiasts, with some being a mixture of the two. Amateur cooking schools are often intertwined with culinary tourism in many countries. Programs can vary from half a day to several years. Some programs lead to an academic degree or a recognized vocational qualification, while others do not. Many programs include practical experience in the kitchen of a restaurant attached to the school or a period of work experience in a privately owned restaurant.
Cochise College is a public college in Arizona. Founded on September 21, 1964, the school has campuses in Douglas and Sierra Vista, and centers in Benson, Fort Huachuca, and Willcox. Cochise College offers associate degrees in art, applied science, business, elementary education, general studies, and science, and over 30 different certificate programs. The college also offers transfer programs for students to transfer to partner universities.
University of Arkansas Grantham is a public online university based in Little Rock, Arkansas. Founded in 1951 as Grantham Radio License School, it would eventually be renamed Grantham University. The then-for-profit school offered distance-education programs from 1951 until 2021, at which point it was entirely online. Grantham was purchased by the University of Arkansas System for one dollar in 2021, merging with the latter’s eVersity online program. It is composed of four colleges: the College of Business, Management, and Economics; the College of Humanities and Social Sciences; the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology; and the College of Nursing and Health Professions. It is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission.
Ashland University is a private Christian university in Ashland, Ohio. The university consists of a 135-acre (55 ha) main campus and several off-campus centers throughout central and northern Ohio. Ashland was founded in 1878 as Ashland College. It is affiliated with The Brethren Church.
ECPI University, or East Coast Polytechnic Institute, is a private for-profit university based in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It provides undergraduate- and graduate-level education in an accelerated format. ECPI University has six colleges with thirteen campus locations in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Texas, and online. Campuses are located in Virginia Beach, Newport News, Manassas, Richmond, Roanoke, Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Greenville, Columbia, Charleston, Lake Mary, and San Antonio. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Education Corporation of America, headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, was a privately held company that operated proprietary colleges across the United States. Included were three schools with 31 campuses, plus one online school and four affiliated businesses. The schools abruptly announced their closing before next semester, after ECA was denied accreditation on December 4, 2018. Closings began on December 7.
Doña Ana Community College is a public community college with several campuses in Doña Ana County, New Mexico. It was established in 1973 at the request of the Gadsden, Hatch, and Las Cruces school boards to provided vocational and technical education opportunities to the citizens of Doña Ana County. It is independently accredited by The Higher Learning Commission. The community college offers instruction leading to associate degrees and technical certificates and preparation for further academic work. It is a branch of New Mexico State University. Doña Ana Community College has six campuses, with three in Las Cruces, and one each in Anthony, Sunland Park, and Chaparral. Dual credit classes are also offered in conjunction with local high schools.
