Subhash Pal

Subhash Pal was an Indian mountaineer, from Bankura, West Bengal. He died on 22 May 2016 while returning, after reaching the summit of Mount Everest (8,848 metres) on 21 May 2016. He was the first mountaineer from Bankura to scale Mount Everest. [1] [2] He was in the same team of three other Bengali climbers Sunita Hazra, Paresh Nath and Goutam Ghosh. Only Sunita Hazra returned alive from his team. [3] [4] Subash Pal had reached the 8,848-metre summit on Saturday but collapsed while descending the Hillary Step ice wall. He died in the region between Camp IV and Camp III. [5] Pal is the 284th. climber to have died while attempting to scale Mount Everest, the world's highest peak at 8,848 metres in spring 2016. Subash Pal lost his life due to frostbite which later led to hypothermia. [6]

Bachendri Pal Indian mountaineer

Bachendri Pal is an Indian mountaineer, who in 1984 became the first Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. She was awarded the third highest civilian award Padma Bhushan by Government of India in 2019.

Santosh Yadav is an Indian mountaineer. She is the first woman in the world to climb Mount Everest twice, and the first woman to successfully climb Mount Everest from Kangshung Face. She climbed the peak first in May 1992 and then again in May 1993 with an Indo-Nepalese Team.

Mark Joseph Inglis is a New Zealand mountaineer, researcher, winemaker and motivational speaker. He holds a degree in Human Biochemistry from Lincoln University, New Zealand, and has conducted research on leukaemia. He is also an accomplished cyclist and, as a double leg amputee, won a silver medal in the 1 km time trial event at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney. He is the first double amputee to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world.

Green Boots Unidentified deceased mountain climber

Green Boots is the name given to the unidentified body of a climber that became a landmark on the main Northeast ridge route of Mount Everest. The body has not been officially identified, but he is believed to be Tsewang Paljor, an Indian climber who died on Everest in 1996. The term Green Boots originated from the green Koflach mountaineering boots on his feet. All expeditions from the north side encountered the body curled in the limestone alcove cave at 8,500 m (27,900 ft). In 2006, David Sharp was making a solo climb of Mount Everest when he died in what is known as "Green Boots' Cave".

Kalpana Dash was an Indian lawyer and mountaineer. She was the first Odia mountaineer to scale Mount Everest. She scaled Mount Everest on 21 May 2008, along with a team of five members from the United States, Canada and Nepal.

Premlata Agrawal Indian mountaineer

Premlata Agrawal is the first Indian woman to scale the Seven Summits, the seven highest continental peaks of the world. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2013 and Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award in 2017 for her achievements in the field of mountaineering. On 20 May 2011, she became the oldest Indian woman to have scaled the world's tallest peak, Mount Everest (29,029 ft.), at the age of 48 years at that time while Sangeeta Sindhi Bahl hailing from Jammu and Kashmir broke her record on 19 May 2018 and became the oldest Indian woman to scale Mount Everest doing it at the age of 53. She also became the first person from Jharkhand state to scale Mount Everest.

The May 1996 expedition by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police to reach the summit of Mount Everest happened in the background of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, and resulted in three members of the expedition dying.

Kuntal Joisher

Kuntal Joisher is a mountaineer based in Mumbai, India. On 15 May 2018, he stood on top of Mt. Lhotse, the fourth highest mountain in the world at 8516 meters, and became the first in the world to have ascended any 8000 meter mountain on a 100% vegan lifestyle. During the course of the expedition, Joisher only consumed strictly vegan food, and used only vegan gear including a one-piece synthetic suit made completely from animal-free material, as well as mittens and gloves constructed devoid of down or leather.

Sonam Gyatso (mountaineer)

Sonam Gyatso (1923–1968) was an Indian mountaineer.He was the second Indian man, the seventeenth man in world and the first person from Sikkim to summit Mount Everest the highest peak in the world ,He was one of the 9 summiters of the first successful Indian Everest Expeditions that climbed Mount Everest on May 1965 led by Captain M S Kohli, ,,, .On 22 May -1965 first time that the Oldest Sonam Gyatso at 42 and the Youngest Sonam Wangyal at 23 climbed Everest together.He became the oldest person to scale the peak in 1965 and when he spent 50 minutes at the peak, he set a world record for spending the longest time at the highest point on Earth. The Government of India awarded him the third highest honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1965, for his contributions to the sport of mountaineering.

Mount Everest in 2017

The Mount Everest climbing season of 2017 began in spring with the first climbers reaching the top on May 11, from the north side. The first team on the south side reached the top on May 15. By early June, reports from Nepal indicated that 445 people had made it to the summit from the Nepali side. Reports indicate 160–200 summits on the north side, with 600–660 summiters overall for early 2017. This year had a roughly 50% success rate on that side for visiting climbers, which was down from other years. By 2018, the figure for the number of summiters of Everest was refined to 648. This includes 449 which summited via Nepal and 120 from Chinese Tibet.

The first attempts to summit Mount Everest by Indians were in 1960. The first Indians to reach the summit were a group led by Captain M.S. Kohli in 1965. 422 Indians made a total of 465 attempts between 1965 and 2018. These include 43 repeat attempts by 29 summiteers. There have been 81 attempts by 74 women and 7 repeat attempts by 4 female summiteers from India. A total of 8 Indian summiteers have died while attempting to descend Mount Everest.
