Daniel James Shellabarger (known as Daniel Suelo, or simply Suelo, and The Man Who Quit Money, born 1961) is an American simple living adherent who stopped using money in the autumn of 2000. [1] He was born in Arvada, Colorado, a suburb of Denver, and lives part-time in a cave near Moab, Utah when he is not wandering the country. [1]

Suelo gained fame in October 2009 when his profile appeared in the US men's style print magazine Details . [2] This story was picked up by websites such as The Guardian in the UK, [3] The Huffington Post , [4] and Matador Change. [5] He was also interviewed for the BBC in September 2009, [6] by The Denver Post [7] in November 2009, and the Brazilian INFO [8] in November 2009. His story has since been repeated by many websites and news agencies around the world. Suelo was the subject of a 2006 video profile entitled Moneyless in Moab (2006), by Gordon Stevenson [9] and a 2009 video profile entitled Zero Currency (2009), by Brad Barber [10] as well as being featured on KBYU's Beehive Stories (2010), also by Brad Barber. [11]

Penguin approached Suelo about writing an autobiography, but he said that he would not accept payment for telling his story and he would be interested to do so only if the book was given away for free. Penguin was not interested in this approach, but asked a friend of his, Mark Sundeen, about writing a biography. Sundeen wrote The Man Who Quit Money, which was published by Riverhead/Penguin in 2012, and Suelo did not accept any money from his book but requested that the publishers give away a number of copies to people for free, which they did at promotional book tours. In 2016 Suelo moved back to his hometown to care for his aging parents, [14] and has been using money in this capacity while still caring for his mother, who is in her nineties as of 2017.

Suelo is one of a number of individuals who voluntarily live without money. These include Mark Boyle, Tomi Astikainen  [ fi ] and the late Heidemarie Schwermer  [ de ] (1942–2016). [15] [16] [17] [18] Suelo appeared as a guest writer on Mark Boyle's blog in January 2011. [19]

North by Northwestern: A Seafaring Family on Deadly Alaskan Waters (ISBN 978-0312591144) was released in early 2010. His nonfiction articles have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Believer, Outside Magazine and McSweeney's. His book The Man Who Quit Money (2012) tells the story of Suelo, currently living part-time in a cave near Moab, Utah when he is not wandering the country, who has practiced his form of simple living since 2000.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros was an American folk rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2005. The group was led by singer Alex Ebert. Kirsty "Dotty" Cotton is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, played by Molly Conlin from 2008 to 2010 and Milly Zero from 2019 to 2022. She was introduced on 26 December 2008 as the daughter of established character Nick Cotton. Nick uses Dotty as his partner-in-crime; they plan to kill his mother Dot Branning and inherit the money from her will. She and Dot subsequently become close after Dotty sabotages Nick's murder attempt at the last minute. In her final storyline which aired on 23 February 2010, she left with her mother Sandy, who she believed died. On 3 October 2019, Dotty returned, with the role recast to Milly Zero. On 13 November 2022, it was announced that Zero had quit the show and Dotty left on 16 December 2022.

The Streetbank is a UK-based network and Website that helps users share items with their neighbours which was launched in July 2010 by Sam Stephens and Ryan Davies in West London. Sam Stephens initially set it up to encourage neighbors to share items that they own but do not use every day, such as ladders, drills, and hedge cutters, as well as to "save money, cut down on waste, and reduce their carbon footprints". The purpose of Streetbank is to boost local communities by encouraging people to get to know their neighbours. Streetbank also allows its users to share advice, skills, language teaching, cooking, and DIY.

A moneyless economy or nonmonetary economy is a system for allocation of goods and services without payment of money. The simplest example is the family household. Other examples include barter economies, gift economies and primitive communism.

Denver Carlos Snuffer Jr. is a Utah lawyer, an author of Restorationist devotional books, a lecturer, a speculative theologian, and claims to be a “revelator to fellowships of the remnants movement,” a spiritual movement in schism with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The movement has a few thousand adherents, many of them members or former members of the LDS Church. He was excommunicated by the LDS Church in 2013 for refusing to cease publication of his 2011 book, Passing the Heavenly Gift which challenges many points of LDS orthodoxy. He subsequently has been identified as a prophet by many, and several of his teachings have been canonized as scripture.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Disappearance of Ben McDaniel</span> Scuba diver who disappeared during or after a cave dive

On August 20, 2010, Ben McDaniel, of Memphis, Tennessee, United States, was reported missing after employees in the dive shop at Vortex Spring, north of Ponce de Leon, Florida, noticed that his pickup truck had remained in the shop's parking lot for the previous two days. McDaniel, who had been diving regularly at the spring while living in his parents' nearby beach house, had last been seen by two of those employees on the evening of August 18, on a dive entering a cave 58 feet (18 m) below the water's surface. While he was initially believed to have drowned on that dive, and his parents still strongly believe his body is in an inaccessible reach of the extensive cave system, no trace of him has ever been found. The state of Florida issued his family a death certificate in 2013.

In August 2021, 22-year-old American woman Gabrielle Venora Petito was killed by her fiancé Brian Christopher Laundrie while they were traveling together on a vanlife journey across the United States. The trip was planned to last for four months and began on July 2, 2021, but Petito disappeared on August 27.
